During demolition of the 1937 Missions to Seamen building in October 1995, this stone was removed intact by developers Mirvac Victoria, and placed in the care of the PMH&PS. It is now located as part of the seawall around the car park in Beach St opposite Nott St. There is a photo of the item on the database, taken in the 1990s while the stone was stored at St Joseph's school in Stokes St..01- Cornerstone 1888, originally laid at the Victorian Seamen's Institute corner Nott and Beach Street (Fox Hay building today). Was relocated to interior wall near the chapel doors when the new Mission building at corner of Beach Road and Swallow Street was built in 1937.Engraved in gold lettering on a black background: This memorial stone was laid by His Excellenvy Sir Henry B Loch GGMGKCB, Governor of Victoria on Wednesday the 5th day of September AD 1888missions to seamen, henry b loch -

The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Club (later The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Society) held their first annual meeting at the Temperance Hall, Napier Street, South Melbourne on Monday 22 Aug 1899. They held regular concerts and balls and generally celebrated all things Scottish. They had a male Pipe Band and during the First World War when many men were serving in the military they formed a Ladies Pipe Band. The Thistle Cricket Club played in the Scottish Cricket Competition around the time of, and after, the First World War.Small blue & white edged badge with 'SOUTH & PORT MELB' on the blue edge and 'THISTLE C.C.' on the white edge. William Tulloch Oat TURNBULL was the son of John TURNBULL who was a prominent citizen of Sandridge/Port Melbourne. John owned property around Rouse and Nott Streets and served on Council for 15 years and as Mayor 1877-78. William married Barbara Annie GOULD at Ross Street, Port Melbourne on 9 Oct 1884. They had one daughter, Margaret Keith and a son Sydney.
