Alun LEACH-JONES (1937 - 24 December 2017) Born Maghull, Lancashire, United Kingdom Arrived Australia 1960 Alun Leach-Jones is recognised as one of Australia's leading abstract colour painters. He spent his childhood in the Welsh village of Glasfryn, Denbighshire. At the age of 14 he started a three year apprenticeship with the Solicitors Law Society, Liverpool illuminating manuscripts and hand copying legal documents. While working with the law society Leach-Jones studied painting and drawing in the evenings at the Liverpool College of Art between the years 1955-57. He immigrated to Australia in 1960, settling in Adelaide and attending the South Australian School of Art, after which he travelled and exhibited throughout Australia and abroad. In 1966 Leach-Jones celebrated Noumenon series was shown with Australian Galleries in Melbourne and he was immediately recognised as being part of what was then labelled as ‘the New Abstraction’ in Australian art. Later in 1968 his work was included in the influential exhibition "The Field" held at the National Gallery of Victoria. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Elwyn (Jack) LYNN (6 November 1917 – 22 January 1997) Born Canowindra, New South Wales Sydney based artist Elwyn Lynn was a self-taught artist who often used unconventional painting media and expressive surfaces to create abstract work. He trained as a teacher, and was a teacher of English and History in Sydney Secondary schools until 1968. From 1969 to 1983 Elwynn Lynn was Curator of the Power Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sydney University where he built up an international collection, which is now within the Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art. He was an art critic at The Australian for many years, and wrote several books, including one on the artist Sir Sidney Nolan. Elwyn Lynn was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in 1975. He won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1988, received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Sydney in 1969, and received the Emeritus Award from the Australia Council in 1994. Max MIDDLETON (1922-2013) Born Melbourne In a career spanning 60 years, Max Middleton is known as a 'plein air' landscape painter the artist loved to paint sunrises, aiming to capture what he saw on the spot in paint. Capturing the light was crucial to his artworks. Max Middleton studied Drawing at the National Gallery School under William Rowell in 1938, and painting under Harold Septimus Power in 1940. The first of Middleton's 68 professional exhibitions took place in 1946. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Mohammed and the Origami Lightning" was a print I made in 1980, soon after my return from Mossman, north Queensland and a six month stint of studying the metaphysics of Shaik Ibn Arabi with Diane Cilento. The unspeakable omniscience of the prophet is conjured up in the left hand part of the image, and the playfull fantasy of a make believe world in the right hand part. These two realities spliced into the one printed image was what I found very attractive at the time. (March 2021)Jock CLUTTERBUCK (1945- ) Born Edenhope, Victoria Jock Clutterbuck is a sculptor and printmaker of national significance, his prints in colour etchings and aquatints are often from shaped plates and reflect themes found in his sculpture. Known for sophisticated and detailed abstract form, Clutterbuck studied sculpture and drawing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 – 1966, where he subsequently taught from 1969 – 1973 before taking up a role as the lecturer in Sculpture at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1974 – 2000. This work is an etching with aquatint and colour stencil on Torinoko An early supporter was Tate Adams, who established the Crossley Gallery to exhibit prints. He urged Jock Clutterbuck to create a series of etchings for Crossley Gallery, a gallery estabished by Tate to exhibit prints. Clutterbuck was awarded the National Gallery of Victoria Society Drawing Prize in 1966, the Australian Print Council Prize in 1969 and 1973, the Geelong Print Prize in 1972, the State Government Bicentenary award for sculpture in 1970, the PCA print prize in 1973, the Fremantle Arts Centre Print Prize in 1976 and the Caulfield Arts Centre Sculpture Award in 1979. Doug WRIGHT (1944 - ) Born Ballarat Doug Wright studied at the Ballarta School of Mines Art School between 1963 and 1964, followed by studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1966, resulting in a Diploma of Art (Fine Art Painting). Since 1974 Doug Wright has had over 20 solo exhibitions and a survey exhibition in 1993 which travelled Victorian Regional Galleries. From 1975 to 2009 Doug Wright was Lecturer in Painting at State College of Victoria (Ballarat) and University of Ballarat. This item was commissioned for the entrance of the new Administration Building at Mount Helen by the Director of Ballarat University College, is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Nornie GUDE (1915-2002) Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leading musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. Doug WRIGHT (1944 - ) Born Ballarat Doug Wright studied at the Ballarta School of Mines Art School between 1963 and 1964, followed by studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1965 to 1966, resulting in a Diploma of Art (Fine Art Painting). Since 1974 Doug Wright has had over 20 solo exhibitions and a survey exhibition in 1993 which travelled Victorian Regional Galleries. From 1975 to 2009 Doug Wright was Lecturer in Painting at State College of Victoria (Ballarat) and University of Ballarat. Rick AMOR (1948- ) Born Frankston, Victoria After completing a Certificate of Art at the Caulfield Institute of Art in 1865 Rick Amor studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1966 to 1968. Amor has held over 60 solo exhibitions, and has worked in Barcelona, New York and London. In 1999 Rick Amor became the first official Australian war artist since the Vietnam War. He was appointed by the Australian War Memorial to document the devastated land in East Timor, and the reconstruction efforts of peacekeepers. Professor David Caro OAM was Chancellor of the University of Ballarat for two terms, between 1998 and 2004. His contributions to academia and science have recognised on a national and international global scale. Robert JACKS (1943-2014) Jacks studied sculpture at Prahran Technical College from 1958–1960 and painting at RMIT in 1961–62. His first solo exhibition was held to great acclaim in 1966 and in 1968 his work was included in the landmark exhibition, The Field, at the National Gallery of Victoria. Beginning in 1968, Jacks spent ten years living and working in Canada and the United States. It was during this period that his unique visual language matured, incorporating influences from the major exponents of contemporary abstraction, minimalism and conceptual practice. In 2001 the Bendigo Art Gallery established the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize. Gloria PETYARRE (c.1942 - 2021) Born: Mosquito Bore, Utopia, Northern Territory Language Group: Anmatyerre Community: Utopia, Northern Territory Gloria Petyarre's depiction of the Kurrajong bush medicine leaves with her layered, swirling brushstrokes is her iconic motif. In 1999 Gloria Petyarre became the first Indigenous Australian artist to win the 'Wynne Prize for Landscape' at the New South Wales Gallery. She is credited with being the creator of this popular style, which was adopted and adapted by several generations of her family members over Gloria's retirement in 2019. The artistic tradition in Utopia started in the Utopia Women's Silk Batik Group introduced in 1977. Gloria Petyarre and her aunt Emily Karne Kngwarrye were found members of this group. Gloria Petyarre started painting on canvas in 1988 with her brushstrokes and layered paint having foundations in the batik tradition. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The leaves are collected and then boiled to extract the resin. Following this, the resin is mixed with kangaroo fat collected from the kangaroo’s stomach. This creates a paste that can be stored for up to six months in bush conditions. This medicine is used to heal cuts, wounds, bites, rashes and as an insect repellent. My work is informed by a philosophical and spiritual engagement with Buddhist ideas, particularly in response to environmental concerns. In this work I wanted to challenge myself and explore the limits of clay material. Clay allowed me to express myself and free my mind. When I revisited Australia in 2010 form my residency, the natural environment here still was the best to me. Li-Feng LO (1967- ) Born Taiwan Ceramic artist Dr Li-Feng Lo completed a PhD at Monash University in 2008. She was a resident artist in the Federation University Arts Academy ceramics studio in 2010. Li-Feng worked with Southern Ice porcelain to create sculptural forms in response to environmental concerns. Her work is informed by a philosophical and spiritual engagement with Buddhist ideas. These works were exhibited in the exhibition 'AIRed' at the Post Office Gallery in 2011. Peter BLIZZARD (1940 — 2010) Sculptor Peter Blizzard completed a certificate of art at the Prahran College of Advanced Education and a Diploma of Art at RMIT in 1967. His sculptural career start in 1970 after a career as a graphic designer, creating large steel abstract works. He exhibited at several International Trade Fairs including New York and San Francisco in 1970, as well as Isogaya Gallery in Tokyo in 1997. Between 1972 and 1995 was Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Head of Sculpture at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University). From 1995 he worked full time as a sculptor. Carole WILSON (1960- ) Born Canberra, Australia Carole Wilson undertook undergraduate studies at the Canberra School of Arts and Phillip Institute of Technology. She completed a Graduate Diploma in Education at the University of Ballarat in 1987, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 2000. She has chosen central motifs in her work, which she incorporates throughout a series. The urn has been a unifying motif in Wilson's map work and testifies to the way in which function drives form across cultures. Carole's work is held in many public collections including the National Gallery of Australia, the Powerhouse Museum, State Library of Victoria and a number of regional Victorian galleries. Her posters are in museum collections in Finland, Moscow and Poland. In 2001 Dr Wilson was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Visual Art) from the University of Ballarat (Now Federation University). She graduated with a Graduate Diploma in Education from University of Ballarat in 1987, and a Diploma of Art from the Phillip Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1984. Lainey BEAVIS (1994- ) Born Portland Lainey Beavis completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fine Arts) at the Federation University Arts Academy in 2015. She won the 2015 Art Acquisition Award.
