4 Labels, Le Couteur Chemist, Early 20th Century
In 1896 George Le Couteur succeeded Frank Uren in the Liebig Street chemist shop that had been established by James Astley Bromfield in 1876. Le Couteur had been an apprentice with Michael Ryan in Timor Street in the early 1870s. Le Couteur had his own medicines including his Pectoral Cough Mixture ( selling in bottles for 2 shillings and sixpence) which he claimed acted as a preventative for that "dread disease consumption ". In 1907 Le Couteur sold the business and moved to Melbourne. These labels are of interest as George Le Couteur was an important chemist in Warrnambool ate the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century..1 Cream coloured rectangular label with black text adhered to a piece of white paper. .2 Buff coloured rectangular label with black text adhered to a piece of white paper. .3 Buff coloured rectangular label with red text and decoration of berries .4 Buff coloured rectangular label with black text adhered to a piece of white paper.1 GLASS -- WITH CARE MEDICINE --URGENT G.T LE COUTEUR .1GLASS --WITH CARE MEDICINE --URGENT G.T. Sanderson P (1988): '73 Walpole Street (Kew), 'Otira'. Built 1887. Original use - Residence. Architect - Crouch. Henry Berry, a noted philanthropist and salt merchant of Melbourne, was the original owner of this two-storey, boom-period house. Berry occupied the residence until his death in 1923 while in February the following year, the property was auctioned. Subsequently purchased by the Methodist Church for use as a training college for missionaries, a number of additions and alterations were made at that stage including a memorial chapel that was built on the property in 1957.' Otira is now a private residence. Original colour positive photograph (polaroid) of 'Otira', 73 Walpole Street, Kew, taken in 1978 by students in Form 3R at Trinity Grammar School as part of a project. The view in the photograph is of the front of the house, minus the first floor verandah that had been removed some decades before and preceding the reinstatement of the verandah sometime after 1988. Prue Sanderson, in the City of Kew Urban Conservation Study, Vol.2 (1988) stated that: 'The house originally had a fine cast iron verandah to two facades, however despite its removal, it remains as a most preposessing structure, The small cast iron perch is not original. Overall the design is in Italianate styling and the walls are clad in render, with extremely fine incised medallions in the render at both levels. The treatment of the tripartite windows with rounded upper corners is also atypical and is repeated in the joinery of the front entrance.'"Photo one / Trinity Grammar Project 1978 / Form 3R / "Otira" Walpole St"otira - 73 walpole street, henry berry, historic houses -- kew (vic.), trinity grammar school, melbourne architects -- crouch -

Melbourne Legacy
Document, President's Fund Correspondence, 1933
The Presidents Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. These letters record the first donation of £50 and discussions with Legatee Walter Berry about how the donation was to be used. Also a copy of the letter of 24 February 1933 when President Kemsley wrote to the Howard and Georgina Berry Trust Fund formalising the use of the donations. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. The folder was marked with H40 which is part of an early archive project from the late 1960s and early 1970s.The Presidents Fund was a significant help to legatees and junior legatees who were unable to obtain help from other sources.File letters from Legacy to various donors to acknowledge donations and enclose receipts for donation to the President's Fund.Handwritten 'File' on many letters.financial help, presidents fund, walter berry -

Ephemera, Various papers relating to Richard Squire Mines
In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age."[4] He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed. MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Ballarat Branch. ... Mr R. B. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consols, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have effected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present day managers of mines. It was decided to invite the author to meet a sub-committee on this subject!Various papers relating to Richard Squire Mines including telegrams, reports, receipts, letters and newspaper clippings. .1 Souvenir Telegram .2 Telegram .3 Telegram .4 Telegram .5 Telegram .6 Telegram .7 Telegram .8 Telegram .9 Telegram .10 Telegram .11 Telegram .12 Telegram .13 Telegram .14 Telegram .15 Telegram .16 Newspaper article Mt Mercer Lease 8109, Ballarat .17 Report on the Southern Extension of Main Ballarat Goldfield .18 Letter from Harwood & Pincott Solicitors and Notaries re: Agreement .19 Ballarat Deep Leads Extensions .20 Leigh River Tunnel Syndicate Voucher x 4 .21 Debt Collector Letter .22 HY.
