It should be remembered that recipients of this medal were responsible for assisting the French to hold back the German army while new recruits could be trained and equipped. Collectively, they fully deserve a great deal of honour for their part in the first sixteen weeks of the Great War. There were approximately 378,000 1914 Stars issued. Australian Armed Forces members were issued with the medal produced in Great Britain. The medal was issued to Private A.E.Snell. Albert Edward Snell enlisted in World War One from Nullawarre. He was listed as aged 21, single and a labourer. He was at first in the 8th Battalion (7 Reinforcement Group) and embarked on the Wandilla in 1915 and later transferred to the 14th Battalion. He was wounded in action and returned to Australia in1917.This medal is of considerable significance, firstly as an example of the medal issued after World War One to Australian Armed Forces members and secondly because it was issued to Private A.E. Snell, a resident of Nullawarre, about 32 kilometres from Warrnambool.This is a circular brass medal with a laurel wreath and an inscription on the reverse side. The medal was issued to all those who received the 1914 Star or the 1914-15 Star, and to most of those who were awarded the British War Medal - it was never awarded singly. These three medals were sometimes irreverently referred to as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.The Holgate medals were the first war medals held by BCC archives. They have historical and social significance for the College.The Victory Medal is a 36mm diameter circular copper medal, lacquered in bronze. The obverse shows the winged, full-length, full-front, figure of Victory, with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. The reverse has the words ‘THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914-1919' in four lines, all surrounded by a laurel wreath. Herbert Greening was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.Brass colour medal hanging from a red, white and blue ribbon (in order left to right). The medal is in relief - a wreath is overlaying two crossed swords with a banner in the very centre that reads "1914-15". At the left, right and bottom of the wreath are triangular shapes, and a crown can be seen protruding from the very top that attaches to an eyelet through which the ribbon is fed. Also at the bottom of the wreath is the letter "C" with a "V" in the centre of it. The medal is also missing a fastening pin, so the material is fraying.Back of the medallion: "3292" / "PTE H.S.
