A portrait of Stanley Savige, the founder of Legacy, by Ernest Buckmaster. It was presented to Melbourne Legacy in the late 1940s by the 24th Battalion. Ernest William Buckmaster was an Australian artist born in Victoria. He won the Archibald Prize in 1932 with a portrait of Sir William Irvine. He also served as an Australian war artist during World War II. The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on the founder of Legacy Stan Savige, the ESO collaboration at Legacy House, ANVAM Disability Program Day, and widows having milestone birthdays. A book published in 1986 about the War Widows' Guild and its founder Jessie Vasey, the widow of Major-General George Alan Vasey. Book synopsis: 'Jessie Vasey was truly one of Australia’s great women. She brought into being what was to become the most powerful women’s bloc in Australia’s history. Her successful intent was to establish justice and care for Australia’s World War II widows. At the end of the conflict in 1945, this group of bereaved wives were in the same neglected state as had been the widows of World War I in 1918. Jessie herself was widowed only six months before World War II ended. Her husband died in an aircraft accident off the coast of Cairns. She was 48. But the seeds of compassion and caring for the war widows had been sown before her own loss.' The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. A bronze bust was erected in Morwell to honour Legacy Founder Sir Stanley Savige. It was unveiled on 31 August 2006 and Legatee Bill Rogers was invited to perform the unveiling. At that time he learnt more about Savige's bravery in saving Assyrian refugees. Legatee Rogers printed a news item on ABC Online about the event from World War 1. Much of the story was an interview with Gaby Kiwarkis an Assyrian descendant. In 1918 Stanley Savige had a role in saving about 50,000 Assyrian refugees in Persia (modern day Iraq). Some of those saved enlisted in the British Army and became the RAF Levies, the only indigenous RAF force so honoured. This document outlines some of their history. It was collected by Legatee Rogers when he was researching Stan Savige after unveiling a bronze bust of Savige in Morwell. Source of the document is unknown. Edna Barrie at the cairn, photo received from Graeme Minns in 1988. The cairn marks the site of Jimmy Melrose's plane crash in Melton South. The accident which happened on July 5th 1936. In 1934 Melrose made headlines with a series of spectacular flights. In July of that year, he set around Australia record and in that year established a new solo Australia England record when he flew to England to compete in the MacRoberston race with a De Havilland Puss Moth VH- YQO. The only Australian and the only solo pilot to complete the course within the time limit. He was seventh in finishing order and third in the handicap section making news again during the race with a dramatic landing in Darwin with empty fuel tanks. Late in 1935 Melrose imported the Phoenix for his “Adelaide to Anywhere” Charter Service. The previous year the Heston Aircraft Company had taken over the interests of the well known Comper Aircraft Company, and the first production of the new firm was the Phoenix, a single-engined all wooden five seater machine of sesquiplane configuration. The forward half of the fuselage was a streamlined rectangular section and the rear portion was a monocogue shell; the whole was of plywood fabric covered. The wing was built up of spruce box spars and lattice ribs, ply covered from the leading edge to the front spar and the fabric covered over the remainder. The tail surfaces were of similar construction. The most notable feature of the design was the lower stub wing which ran right across the fuselage embodying two box spars, plywood covered it housed the main undercarriage wheels when retracted and provided a substantial anchorage for the Nu form wing struts. The Dowty undercarriage retracted inwards, operated manually by hydraulic packs, Dual control fitted, with side by side seating for the pilots and three passenger seats behind. Power was a 200 h.p. De Havilland Gipsy VI 6 cylinder inverted in-line air-cooled engine. Six Phoenix were built; five of them registered in Great Britain and one of those was later sold abroad the remaining four were impressed into the R.A.F. in 1940. Specifications were: 40 feet 4 inches length 30 ft 2 ins height, 9ft 7ins, wing area 270 sq ft, Tare weight 2,600lbs loaded weight 3,300lbs; cruising speed 360 m.p.h. landing 50mph ceiling 14,000 ft range 700 miles. Melrose’s machine the first production aircraft was built early in 1936 and test flown of the 24th March. Painted green it carries the words “South Australian Centenary 1936” in silver of the fuselage and the name “Billing on the engine cowling in honor of Melrose’s uncle Noel Pemberton Billing, pioneer designer and founder of the Supermarine Aviation Company. The delivery flight was planned as a goodwill mission to publicise the forthcoming South Australian Centenary celebrations. Melrose left Dympne on the 9th April 1936, and flying via Marseilles, Naples, Athens, Baghdad, Basra, Karachi, Jodphur, Calcutta, Akyab, Penang, Singapore, Lombok, Darwin, Newcastle Waters and Alice Springs reached Adelaide on the 25th of April. Continuing the goodwill flight to other States, he visited Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Grafton, Brisbane, Coff’s Harbour, Sydney again, Launceston, Hobart and Mount Gambier before returning to Adelaide on the 13th May. During June Jimmy made some charter flights and early in July was engaged by Mr. A.J. Campbell a director of several mining companies from Melbourne to Darwin to commence at Essendon on the4th July. However on that day low cloud and steady rain caused the postponement. There was little improvement and Melrose was advised to delay the departure again. However he wished to reach Oodnadatta that night, and when he observed the break in the clouds decided to leave. He planned to climb above the cloud and fly to Adelaide at 3,000 feet. The aircraft was airborne about 8.10 a.m. and was last seen from Essendon climbing above the clouds. At 8.45 people at Melton (30 miles West of Melbourne) heard an approaching aircraft. The engine noise increased abnormally and eye witnesses saw the machine fall out of control from the cloud base about 800 feet and then disintegrate, fragments were scattered for 1½ miles and both occupants were killed. This image of the Ralph Falkiner’s Mueller Petrol-Electric Road Train was taken in Wodonga in February 1914. Imported from Germany by Mr Ralph S Falkiner in late 1913, the train’s inventor, Major W A Mueller with two assistants, came to Melbourne to assemble then commission the train. The train cost Mr Falkiner about £13,000 plus £4,591 import duties. The Falkiner family were sheep breeders in the Western Riverina and he hoped to use the road train primarily to convey wool to the railways for despatch to Sydney. The train was 216 feet long, weighed 43.5 tons with a top speed loaded of 6-8m/h and petrol consumption up to two gallons per mile. Its first Australian journey was to haul 50 tons of cargo to Edmondson & Co at Wagga Wagga, 277 miles away. The journey from Melbourne was plagued with problems including broken cylinders and crank shaft and overheating as it was not designed for Australian climatic conditions. Three months after leaving Melbourne it arrived in Wodonga. A series of problems between Springhurst and Wodonga, including broken cylinders and valves caused an eight day delay. Some of the cargo was off-loaded in Albury, then after repairs the train continued on to Wagga where it arrived in May 1914. After unloading there, the road train was taken to Mr Falkiner's Groongal Station, near Hay and subsequently made several long trips into drought-stricken areas or the Western Riverina. Eventually the dream collapsed when the engines gave out after the train bogged in the sticky black soil of the Hay plain with 251 bales of wool on board. The train was finally railed back to Melbourne and stored but destroyed when the warehouse burnt down. In this photo, the road train is drawn up outside the Wodonga Stores and Bakery owned and operated by George Leighton. Mr Leighton began his business opposite the Terminus Hotel in Sydney Street, Wodonga in 1885. His business included a general store, stocking groceries, ironmongery, drapery, crockeryware, boots and shoes as well as a bakery. He was very actively involved in the community and served on the Wodonga Council for 18 years including three terms as Wodonga Shire President in 1901 – 02, 1910-11 and 1913-14. He was also Chairman of the Wodonga Waterworks Trust for several terms. Mr. Leighton also took a prominent part in the movement to establish a Public Library in Wodonga. His other involvements including being a Founder of the Wodonga Lodge of Freemasons, Honorary Treasurer of the Wodonga Bulldogs Football Club and Secretary of the Wodonga Racing Club. Des Martin lived all his life in Wodonga, except for his years of service during World War Two. He was raised on the family property Aherlo in the Huon Creek Valley. In 1937 he joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment but in May 1940 led his Wodonga Troop into the 2/2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion, which saw service in Syria, Java, New Guinea and Borneo. After the war, Des returned to Aherlo and his horses. He was granted permission by the Victorian Racing Club to participate as an amateur “gentleman” rider. He was a founder of the Victorian Amateur Riders Association and also the Murray Valley Hunt Club, for which he was Master for 21 years. He was a prolific writer, cartoonist, photographer and poet, contributing to The Border Morning Mail, The Age, and the Herald and Weekly Times amongst other publications. Des Martin’s other literary works included Australia Astride (1959), A Tale of Twin Cities, Part One (1981) and Backing up the Boys (1998). In 1976, Des wrote an historical novel, “Many a Mile”, based on a fictional region which highly resembled the Albury-Wodonga and Upper Murray area of Victoria. It was set in the last 10 years leading up to Federation. Throughout this period tensions (caused by fluctuating border duties, including an infamous impost on cattle and horses) occasioned the intermittent posting of heavily armed police detachments along the River Murray. Des also wrote eight 50-minute scripts from “Many a Mile” as a television series and were presented to Michael Pate, one of Australia’s leading actors and producers. Also, funding was sought through the Australian Broadcasting Commission ... unfortunately the series never came to fruition. This album is a pictorial precis, including photos and scene descriptions, created to promote the concept of the series and have it produced locally in North Eastern Victoria featuring local settings, skilled horsemen and actors. It was to be called “Ringer’s River” ... Ringer being the title accorded to either a top cattle hand, or the fastest shearer in the wool shed. Des Martin died on 12th April 1995.These albums and images are significant because they document literature written by a prominent member of the Wodonga community. A photo of the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendale dated September 24, 1930. It appears to be a professional photograph purchased as a souvenir. See also 01024 Menin Gate, Ypres, as it is by the same manufacturer. The Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground for the dead of the First World War in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front (source Wikipedia). The hand written inscription on the back of the photo says: "This memorial in Cemetery was built over a German dugout. 12,000 men are buried here. Stone wall at back has soldiers names engraved on same. Those unknown - words in stone 'Australian Soldier of the Great War Known unto God.' Australians captured Passchendale from the Germans Oct 4th 1917. Beautiful cemetery, all well kept, gardens, lawns, flowers. Ypres, Belgium Sept 24/30" The source of these photos is not known but they were stored together in the archives. Items from a photo album (Cat.No. 01588), with the printed funeral service for Lt Colonel Donovan Joynt held on 12 May 1986 (Cat.No. 01596). The newspaper clipping was written by John Lahey as part of the 'Lahey at Large' column he wrote for The Age between 1982-1996. He noted that Joynt 'was the last survivor of the 66 Australians who won Victoria Crosses in World War 1.' and mentions Joynt's work for Legacy, and the Shrine of Remembrance. Photos of the unveiling of a memorial to Stan Savige in Morwell Victoria on 31st August 2006. It is a bronze bust mounted on a granite pedestal, it was installed in Legacy Place. The inscription on the front says: THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE CITIZENS OF MORWELL TO HONOUR A GREAT HUMANITARIAN AND GREAT AUSTRALIAN Photos include the President of Legacy, Bill Rogers; Liza Price, Mayor of Morwell; Paul Buckley, La Trobe Valley CEO and a photo of Sir Stanley Savige KBE, CB, DSO, MC, ED. founder of Legacy who was born in Morwell 26.6.1890. The inscription on the back (according to Monumentaustralia.org.au) says: A Distinguished Service Order (DSO) was awarded to Captain Stanley Savige, for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the retirement of Assyrian refugees from Sain Keleh to Tikkan Tappah between 26th and 28th July 1918; also at Chalkaman on the 5th and 6th August 1918. He was in command of a small party sent to protect the rear of the column of refugees who being hard pressed by the enemy. By his energy, resource and able dispositions the hostile troops, many of whom were mounted, were kept at a distance, although in greatly superior force. He hung on to position after position until nearly surrounded, but on each occasion extricated his command most skilfully. The photo shows a group of Legatees who attended the 13th Annual Legacy Club Conference held in April 1940 in Launceston. The names are not known. The Legacy conference was held periodically, often annually, and allowed Legatees from across Australia to gather together. The aim of the annual conference was an exchange of ideas and methods of carrying out Legacy functions, and to form general policy for cooperation between clubs and groups. From TROVE. Delegates from other clubs. Visitors from Melbourne, Sydney, Bendigo, Newcastle, Geelong, and Hobart, together with a strong representation from the Launceston Club will take part in the conference, which will open in the Anzac Hostel Hall on Saturday. Delegates and observers will arrive in Launceston this week to be present at the ceremony of presenting the Charter of Legacy to the Hobart Club on Wednesday evening. The organisation in Hobart has been functioning for many years as the Remembrance Club, but has now accepted the invitation of Legacy to join up, using as its new name "Remembrance Club (Hobart Legacy)." ' The man second from left on the front row is Frank Wittman, who was the smallest man to have enlisted in the 1st AIF and as such the shortest Legatee. Stanley Savige is seen as the founder of Legacy when it was founded in Melbourne in September 1923. He was born in Morwell Victoria on 26/6/1890. He served in the Australian Army between 1915 and 1946, including service in both World Wars. Stanley Savige was awarded a KBE, CB, DSO, MC,ED. Stanley George Savige was born in Victoria in 1890, and enlisted in the AIF (Private 577) in March 1915. He served with 24 Battalion at Gallipoli, and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant prior to the evacuation, at which he was part of the final holding party at Lone Pine. In France he saw service with 6 Brigade Headquarters as well as with his battalion, and was awarded the Military Cross for his gallantry at the second battle of Bullecourt. In 1918, he became one of a small number of Australians selected for service with 'Dunsterforce' in Persia, commanding 'Urmia Force', and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. Between the wars, Savige continued his military career with the Militia, and by 1939 he held the rank of colonel. When the 2nd AIF was raised, he was placed in command of 17 Brigade, which he led through the campaigns in Libya, Greece and Syria, before being promoted to command 3 Division (Militia) in New Guinea. In 1944, he was appointed GOC 2 Corps, in command of forces engaged in the campaign on Bougainville, and accepted the Japanese surrender there in September 1945. Lieutenant General Savige was knighted (KBE) in 1950, and died in 1954. He is widely remembered for his efforts between the wars in founding the Legacy Clubs (which he modelled on the 'Remembrance Club' formed in Hobart by his friend and former commander Sir John Gellibrand in 1923) to care for the dependants of deceased servicemen and ex-servicemen. An address delivered by P.W. Powell (the first Secretary of the Club) in October 1923 to the newly formed Legacy Club. In it he notes that "The most important thing in the development of this Club is to formulate a sound constructive policy that will draw in the best type of member and make the Club a live force in the advancement of this country." The comradeship and cooperation developed by the troops during wartime should be applied in civilian life to the development of Australia. A book about the fighting around the French village of Pozieres in 1916. Many of the early legatees fought on the Western Front and some, including founder Stan Savige, fought at Pozieres. There is a photo in the book of Brigadier-General Gellibrand and his staff, including Savige, eating breakfast in a shell hole. Back in Australia after the war Gellibrand inspired Savige to found a club like the Remembrance Club he had founded in Hobart. Thus Savige founded Legacy. Speeches by Legatees Kemsley and Armstrong in later years showed they had also fought in the Pozieres area. Some research has shown: The fighting around Pozières was part of the brave actions of the Australians during the battle of the Somme from July 1916. Between 23 July and 5 August 1916, the Australian 1st and 2nd Divisions captured Pozières village and Pozières heights, a ridge 500 metres east of the village. The 4th Division then continued the attack north along the ridge, the Australians in ten days of continuous action reached Mouquet Farm. The farm resisted capture until 26 September 1916. In less than seven weeks in the fighting at Pozières and Mouquet Farm three Australian divisions suffered 23,000 casualties. Of these, 6,800 men were killed or died of wounds. Black and white photocopy of a typed letter written by Company Sergeant Major (later Captain) George Eric Milne on the second last night at Lone Pine, Gallipoli. The letter to his parents show that he was scheduled to be in the second last party to leave the area during the evacuation. The other papers with this letter show that Legatee Don S (probably Simonson) had attended a planting of a Lone Pine seedling at Scotch College and the Head had read the letter out as part of the service. George Milne had attended school at Scotch College and is commemorated with his name on the wall of the Memorial Hall. From NAA his record shows that he had left Australia as part of the 24th Battalion (on the same ship as Legacy founder Stan Savige), he served at Gallipoli. Later with the 46th Battalion he was wounded in action and died in France on 5 April 1918, and is buried at Gezaincourt Communal Cemetery. The outfit comes from the ISG x Akira 2023 Afterpay Australian Fashion Week (AAFW) collection show presented at Carriageworks, Sydney 16 May 2023. Jordan Gogos is one of Australia's most innovative multidisciplinary artists. Preferring to describe his current designs as 'non normative', 'wearables for the imaginative' Gogos' work and practices have been influential in changing the conversation around clothing design, production and presentation by embedding co-collaboration, sustainability, diversity, and inclusivity in all aspects of his label. Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan before immigrating to Australia in 1987, Akira Isogawa is regarded as one of Australia's most innovative and successful fashion designers. In a career spanning over 25 years, Akira is perhaps best known for his contemporary interpretations of traditional Japanese clothing, and the quality of his craftsmanship. Isogawa has worked on a range of creative collaboration projects over the course of his career and was named Australian Designer of the Year at the Australian Fashion Industries Awards in 1999. The ISG x Akira collection show presented at AAFW resulted in a collection of 40 looks featuring digitally printed, compressed and patchworked garments with applique, embroidery, beading and origami. Made from deadstock and archival fabrics, accessorised with unique headpieces and footwear designs, the looks were presented in a theatrical collection show amid a colourful runway piled high with upcycled textile artworks and trojan horses signifying Gogo's Greek heritage, signed by Akira in red calligraphy. The fabric of the hat, top and skirt has been quilted and stitched together, and is of grey, white, black and yellow hues. The top has two sets of ties which fasten at the back of the waist. The skirt and top feature gold medallions which show a trojan horse and lettering. The shoes are lace up boots and include hues of fluro pink and yellow, as well as white, black and grey. The boots are lined with black vinyl.
