Print - Colour print, Charles Webb, Original design of the Alfred Hospital, c. 1870
"The Alfred Hospital was founded in 1869 as a result of the work of a number of Melbourne doctors who fought a long and internecine battle for an additional general hospital treating its first patient in 1871. Prahran Council donated a parcel of low lying land for the provision of a Hospital. In 1870, the Melbourne architect, Charles Webb, won the competition to design The Alfred Hospital with his revolutionary design. Webb incorporated the "Nightingale" design principles by designing large light filled pavilions as wards connected by covered corridors or walkways." (Alfred Health)Small colour print mounted on a wood block. Print depicts a series of five red brick buildings at centre, with a dirt road snaking up from the left foreground to the front of the central building. A man is driving a two horse buggy along the dirt road towards the buildings. The landscape on either side of the road consists of grassland and low vegetation, as well as four shallow circular pits (two on either side) which contain vegetation. There are two figures in the right foreground cutting grass with scythes. A flock of birds is visible in the sky in the central background, above the main hospital building. Text printed below image reads 'THE ORIGINAL DESIGN OF THE ALFRED HOSPITAL/By C.Webb, Arckitect (sic)'. The back of the wooden block to which the print is affixes is painted black, and a circular hook has been attached to the centre back of the block for hanging the artwork. The hook is gold coloured, and attached using two gold coloured pins and a small strap. Handwriting at bottom right of the back of the object reads 'ANN TAVELL''THE ORIGINAL DESIGN OF THE ALFRED HOSPITAL/By C.Webb, Arckitect (sic)' -

Bacchus Marsh & District Historical Society
Painting, View of Bacchus Marsh from Stamford Hill circa 1880s
The date of the scene depicted in this painting has not been identified. The painting has no artist signature or date. The view depicted is from an area close to the present day Madden Drive in Bacchus Marsh. The angle of the view suggests the artists viewpoint may have been from a spot close to the intersection of Madden Drive and Muir Street looking east over the town. Several buildings constructed in the 1860s and 1870s can be seen in the painting. These include Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church (now Uniting Church), built 1865, Stone Villa in Bennett Street, the Bacchus Marsh Court House, the former National Bank and the Border Inn, all on Main Street, and in the distance Saint Bernard’s Catholic Church. Buildings such as Simon’s Garage erected in 1913, on the corner of Main Street and Grant Street are not shown. In the foreground running horizontally Grant Street can be seen. The view of Grant Street shows very few buildings. One house in the centre of the picture is Murdoch's Cottage. A brick house constructed in 1868 on the corner of Grant Street and Waddell Street. To the right of the picture along Grant Street no buildings are shown. The store built by John Jory in 1890 at 60-62 Grant Street which survives as a building in 2025 is not shown. Some allowance for artistic interpretation must be allowed but based on what the scene depicts it suggests a scene of Bacchus Marsh in the late 1870s or 1880s. Print reproduction of an oil painting. Framed. Undated. Unsigned. BMDHS Location: AR/B12/Beside (on floor)views bacchus marsh vic., paintings bacchus marsh vic., landscapes bacchus marsh vic. -

Photograph - Napoleon Reef Gold Mine Battery Site, 1936
The Napoleon (BML) gold mine (1932) was located beside McDougall Road, Golden Gully, between Martin and Hattam Street. It had a depth of 921 feet. It was one of the latest and most lavish of Bendigo's mines. Plant and equipment were electrically driven. The four-compartment shaft, extra large by goldfield's standards, measured 17 feet 6 inches by 5 feet 2 inches and was cement lined below 900 feet instead of being red gum boxed as was the usual practice. The workshop was equipped to carry out all repairs for the equally lavish BML mines on the Nell Gwynne and Carshalton reefs. (The Gold Mines of Bendigo, Book 2, Arthur Victor Palmer)Significant to mining history of Bendigo.Black and white photograph. Image shows flat, open landscape with four large eucalypt trees in centre of image. Four men working with shovels on left hand side of image, one man with wheelbarrow and dog alongside. Wooden framed structure on right hand side. Written in pencil on back of photograph: ' Battery excavations started 22/9/36' and 'excavations started'.napoleon gold mine, napoleon reef gold mine
