"Miss Hook of Holland" is a musical comedy (described as a "Dutch Musical Incident") in two acts, with music and lyrics by Paul Rubens and book by Austen Hurgon and Rubens. It opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London, on 31 January 1907, and had a successful run of 462 performances. A synopsis of the plot can be found at https://www.guidetomusicaltheatre.com/shows_m/miss_hook_holland.htm This was one of a number of productions of the Surrey Hills Amateur Operatic Society during the 1930s. The society formed in 1931 and its first production was "The Cingalee", followed in 1932 by "The Arcadians". Other productions were "Princess Ju-Ju", "The Quaker Girl", "The Hook of Holland" and "The Country Girl". Apart its cultural and social importance, the aim of the Society was to raise funds for charity. Mrs Constance Clucas was a driving force behind the productions. A comprehensive account of the society's activities is found in 'A history of Surrey Hills' Sporting clubs and Cultural Groups" by Ken James. Dress, Stage costume, circa 1950s-70s
Purchased from an opportunity shop, this dress is a stage costume bearing the label of Bonn & Mackenzie, a prominent UK costume designer from the 1950s to the 1970s. The dress appears to have been worn by June Bronhill (1929-2005), a prominent Australian opera singer and actress, whose name is handwritten on the label. Born June Mary Gough, she began using the stage name of Bronhill in 1952 in honour of her NSW home town of Broken Hill as a form of thanks to the local community who had helped raise money to send her overseas for professional training as a singer. Bronhill trained in London and gained early exposure with the English National Opera. She went on to star in many theatrical productions in Australia and the UK. She moved back to Australia permanently in 1976, and in 1980 was cast in her first television role as Mrs Crawford in the Australian version of 'Are You Being Served?'.Full-length short-sleeved dress of white cotton, lace and nylon, featuring elaborately ruffled sleeves and vertical stripes of lace on the skirt and bodice. The dress is open at the back, fastening with hooks and cotton ties to facilitate quick costume changes.Label, white cotton with red text: "BONN & MACKENZIE LTD. / TEMPLE BAR 1393". Handwritten underneath in black pen: "JUNE BRONHILL".june bronhill, bonn & mackenzie, theatre costume -

... . A misprint of his name in a local directory as Annie Marchand created ...Murray Comrie Collection. Copy of an 1866 photograph by Aimé Marchand. Victoria Hotel and Theatre is the stone building at centre right. On the immediate left is Pierce's Southern Cross Store, later to be incorporated into the flour mill complex. The gentleman in the white hat in the group on the left is George Thomson. In June 1866, Aimé Marchand (1846-1910) made a series of fourteen photographs which were submitted to the 1866-67 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition, where they earned a 1st Class Honorable Mention. This is one of those fourteen images. Of French or Belgian origin and possibly formerly an assayer in California, Marchand appears to have begun his practice of photography in Tarnagulla around 1865 as an assistant to A.B. Clay. By the following year he had settled in Portland, where he opened the Royal Photographic Studio in Gawler Street. From his base in Portland he toured surrounding districts, offering portrait and view services. Little else is known about his life. He appears to have left Australia in 1878. A misprint of his name in a local directory as Annie Marchand created the misconception that he was one of only a few named women photographers in the colonies. Glass Slides, Alex Gunn & Sons, 1930s-1950s
These slides have been made by Alex Gunn and Sons, a 20th century lantern and slide maker based in Melbourne. The slides were produced for Val Morgan and Sons, a cinema advertising slide maker. Val (Valentine) Morgan (1867-1952) established a business in 1894 and by 1914 was making slides for cinemas. By 1921 the business was a company producing slides for movie houses and by the 1930s was the largest business of its type in Victoria. The company also produced the Morgans Street Directory for over 50 years in the 20th century. The company was sold in 1987. It is believed that these slides were shown in the Capitol Theatre in Warrnambool as the advertisements feature a local business, Fletts Plumbing. Most of the slides advertise Metters and Everhot bathroom and kitchen appliances, obtainable from the Warrnambool firm, going under the various trade names of Flett Brothers, F. Flett and Co and Fletts of 147 Lava Street (with ‘Lava’ spelt as ‘Laver’ in one ad). John Flett, boat and bridge builder, settled in Warrnamool in 1868 and it was his son William who first established a tinsmith and plumbing business in Warrnambool in the 1880s in a shop in Timor Street. His sons, Frederick and Charles, continued on the business after the father’s death in a Lava Street site until its demise in the 1950s. These items are of great interest as examples of cinema advertising slides used in cinemas in the mid 20th century and perhaps in the 1930s. The items have local significance as the slides feature advertisements for the business of the Flett family who were local plumbers and fitters. The slides are also of local interest as they are believed to have been used in the Capitol Theatre in Kepler Street, still operating today. These are eleven glass slides produced for cinema advertising in the mid 20th century. Three of the slides are blank and eight contain coloured images and printing advertising the products of kitchen and bathroom items and the local Warrnambool supplier. Four of the slides have thicker glass and four have paper labelling on the top and bottom edges. The slides are held in a cardboard box without a lid.Val Morgan & Sons Pty Ltd Reg. Domestic object - Plate fragment Mansions Hotel, C1920
The Hotel Mansions was formerly the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace, erected in 1890 at a cost of around ten thousand pounds at the corner of Kepler and Koroit Streets by a group of local businessmen and leased out. Within 12 months of construction, it was granted a wine licence and was renamed the Ozone Hotel. Coffee Palaces were temperance hotels which were popular in the latter part of the 19th century. They offered recreation and superior accommodation. The Ozone Hotel operated until 1915 and was then closed before re-opening in 1920 as the Hotel Mansions. It had major renovations including a large theatre area. February 23rd 1929 saw the most spectacular fire in Warrnambool's history when the Hotel Mansions was burnt to the ground. Evelyn O'Brien was granted a temporary licence and in September 1930 she was given permission to rebuild. The new hotel, named Hotel Warrnambool was opened in March 1931. This piece of china is a relic from the fire. This piece of china is a small relic from the biggest fire ever to occur in Warrnambool and as such has strong historical significance.Fragment of burnt white, china plate from Hotel Mansions. There is a Hotel Mansions symbol etched inside an oval design on the front of the plate. The hotel side plate, heavily crazed and brown stained on both front and back.Stamp of "Ironstone Ch..." on back also an etched, sand blasted Hotel Mansions on front too faint to photograph effectively.warrnambool, ozone coffee palace warrnambool, grand ozone coffee palace, hotel mansions warrnambool, fire at the ozone, ozone hotel -
