Copy of original "Botany Book' handwritten by Robert Whatmough in the mid 1800s, accompanied by transcription by Nancy Whatmough. The current edition was put together by Steve Whatmough and published in 2008.An example of early horticultural notes. Robert Whatmough was an early Greensborough district orchardist. After arriving in Melbourne in 1841, Robert was Melbourne's first lamplighter in Bourke and Collins Streets. He worked as an orchardist from 1942 to 1887, growing and developing fruit varieties at his 'Willis Vale' orchard. He was an inaugural member of the "Victorian Horticultural Improvement Society' and exhibited 33 varieties of fruit at the1875 Victorian Intercolonial Exhibition..208 pages; spiral binding, clear cover. Churchill Island was discovered by Lieut. James Grant in 1801 and he planted the first wheat crop in Victoria there. The Cairn was erected to commemmorate this by the Victorian Farmer's Union. The Minister of Agriculture The Hon. G. L. Chandler CMG. This book was produced by experienced teachers to meet the requirements of the revised course of study in arthmetic for elementary schools. Teachers were expected to use this book as an aid rather than merely as a series of exercises as a matter of routine. This book would have been used by children all over Victoria in year 7 or form 1 for maths classes. This book is social significance due to the names of local people that are in the book and shows that this would have been used in Kiewa Valley elementary schools in the mid 20th Century.
