The last swing door train was withdrawn from service in 1973. The third track on this line was commissioned in 1971. The overpass bridge was built at this time. The Silver Street Bridge, 1901 Butty Gang workers excavate a rock cutting near the Silver Street bridge prior to laying of track. The Butty Gang system versus the Contract System was subject to public debate regarding cost benefits at the time of the Eltham line construction. Butty gang workers were a group of men who take a contract for a part of a work, as in the construction of railroads, etc., the proceeds being equally divided between them, with something extra to the foreman. Some hold picks, a couple of horses and carts are lined up probably for carting the broken rock away, dirt, rocks and shale lay at the bottom. A pair of small wooden buckets are evident, most likley to provide drinking water. The timber Silver Street bridge crosses the cutting in the background. The opening of the railway line from Heidelberg to Eltham took place on the 6th June 1902. Similiar to 810. Now demolished. Newport Railway station, visible through the windows was situated on the opposite side of the Melbourne Road level crossing. All of this infrastructure has since been replaced by a large overpass, the level crossing now the location of a pedestrain underpass. Contextual or historic information One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office.The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's tram network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Two faded original horizontal photographs, mounted on vertical card showing the original railway level crossing in Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, before a railway overpass was constructed and the laying of the electric tramline. House with Spanish taste belonged to Mr. Peake of Peake and Cox, the timber yard directly across Whitehorse Road from this house which became the new site of St.John's Roman Catholic Primary School. This house was on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Albert Street. Upon the sale of the timber yard and mill the catholic church the house was also sold to the church and was occupied as a residence for the school's teaching Sister's. Shows Glenferrie Road, near Linda St looking south, c1915 prior to the construction of the Railway overpass at Glenferrie Railway Station with H class tram 58 in the view. The tram line was constructed in 1913. It would appear that the level crossing gates are closed in the photograph. The building on the right-hand side by the horse-drawn cart was an ANZ bank until 2021. The closer building, a theatre (The Palace) has since been demolished and is now a Coles Supermarket. The level crossing was replaced with an overbridge in April 1916. The church in the background is the Immaculate Conception Church, without the spires - built after WW1.
