non-fictionNOT ONLY IN STONE is the story of Polly Thomas, a woman of strength, courage and compassion, whose life is intimately tied to the pioneering era of South Australia. Polly arrives in Adelaide from Cornwall in 1865 with her husband Nathan, a miner, Richard, her baby son, and Ellen, her young sister. The baby had been born on the long and arduous voyage to Australia. Polly and Nathan move to the copper mining towns on the Yorke Penjnsula. Tragedy and death haunt Polly's life. Her sister dies in childbirth; Polly has four children but only two survive; a son is drowned; her beloved daughter dies of croup; Nathan is crippled; and a crooked lawyer swindles Polly of her life savings. Although tragedy robs Polly's life of joy, her independent spirit is never quelled. After Nathan's death, she moves to Adelaide and for many years lives in North Adelaide close to her son, who succeeds in business, and his family. The sorrow in the life of Polly Thomas is overwhelming, but never is it mawkish. This is history with a human face. A family life chronicle full of the stuff of the pioneers... a closely woven tapestry of the humour and pathos of life. John MITCHELL (1837 - 14 July 1926) Born Woodside, Donside, Scotland John Mitchell attended evening classes under James Giles in Aberdeen, and was also taught by his uncle the Peterhead artist John Mitchell. After an apprenticeship at a local lithographic company (Keith and Gibb) John Mitchell went to London to study at the Slade under Legros. Returning to Aberdeen he painted many scenes around the city and Aberdeenshire, including Balmoral, under the patronage of Queen Victoria. John Mitchell gave lessons in painting to the Royal Family. His landscapes are highly coloured with dominant blues and purples in the hills and with vivid greens and yellows in the foreground, subtly fused and never garish. He lithographed sketches for John Stewart's 'The Sculptured Stones of Scotland', 2 vols 1856-57, illustrated 'Under Lochnagar' 1894. His landscapes of Aberdeenshire are highly prized especially in the area in which he lived. His painting in the Mearns is regarded by some as his best work. In 1875 he painted an interior of Culter Castle and its Chapel which was subsequently purchased by the owner and in 1883 showed a portrait of his mother. Lived latterly at 10 Gladstone Place, Queen's Cross, Aberdeen. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This Can opener was used at the Bandiana Golf Club near Wodonga. Bonzer was a trademark of Mitchell & Cooper of England. Alfred Mitchell & Arthur Cooper started as silversmiths and engravers in 1879 in East London. The family owned business is still operated by Guy Cooper, great grandson of Arthur Cooper. Bandiana Army Golf Club 18 hole course opened in 1949. The Club reached its highest membership with 400 members in the late 1980s.
