Book, The Lady of the Lake, 1810
This book is an 1810 third edition copy of Walter Scott’s poem, ‘The Lady of the Lake’. It is notable for its illustrations of the drawings of Richard Westall (1765-1836), an English painter and illustrator and Queen Victoria’s drawing master. Westall is best-known for his portraits of Lord Byron. There is no information available on the original owner, the Reverend Matthew West. Tis book is important because: 1. It is an 1810 edition and of antiquarian interest 2. It belonged to Louie Mack, the cousin of Sir Ronald Mack, an important Warrnambool Parliamentarian. Miss Mack was well-known in the Warrnambool area as the Secretary of the Warrnambool Technical School in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. The Macks were prominent early settlers in the Warrnambool area. This is a hard cover leather bound book of 433 pages (poem, ‘The Lady of the Lake’ by Walter Scott). The cover is brown leather with a gold ornamental border. The inside cover has a tan and blue mottled pattern. The book has illustrations with engravings from the designs of Richard Westall. The illustrations have a piece of tissue paper in front of them. The first page has a stamp of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society and there is a loose sheet indicating that the book was published in 1810 and that it belonged to Miss L.A. Mack.‘The Revd. Book (Item) - Scrapbook, David Hood Duncan, Album, 1850-1900
... poems ...This scrapbook contains newspaper cuttings, hand written poems and quotes from friends and family members and pressed flowers and ferns. Entries were made in the mid 1800s to early 1900s and relate to Duncan family history. The initials suggest this is Lillie and Olive's father, David Hood Duncan, who created this scrapbook. David Hood Duncan married Ada Blanche Thomson (1861-1928) on 25 November 1896. Ada was the daughter of John Gilmour Thomson (1829-1905) from Moonee Ponds and Hannah Davies (1834-1890) Their first daughter, Lillie, was born on 15 October 1897 in Woodland, South Gippsland where he was a farmer. In 1908, 1910, 1911, 1913, Lillie Duncan sent letters to Patience from the Young Folk section of the Australian. She was writing from Woodlea, Cathkin, where they had moved as there was no school in South Gippsland. They moved to 11 Paxton Street, East Malvern when David retired. He was leasing a farm, Kia Ora, in Koo Wee Rup, the South Gippsland. Ada Blanche died on 28 December 1928. David died on 24 May 1942.This is an album of social and historic significance, being part of a sub-collection of material that provides a snapshot of the type of individuals and families involved in the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild and the activities carried out by that organisation.Decoratively embossed word on front cover : "ALBUM" . poem, We Come, early 20th century
Daughter of George Temple and Mary McAuslane of Castlemaine, Hilda married James Kerr in 1893 and lived at Lincluden, Raymond Street, Orbost. Her husband, Dr James Kerr, was a Scot who had come to Australia as a ship's doctor and practised in NSW before visiting Orbost on a government vaccination programme. He liked Orbost and returned there, its first doctor, until his death in 1928. Hilda was sometimes referred to as 'Mrs Dr Kerr.' She and her sisters Mabel Stewart Temple and Margaret Ferrie Temple were all talented writers and musicians. This poem is an example of the talent of Hilda Temple Kerr. Hilda Temple Kerr (1874-1956) grew up in Orbost. She was very talented and published several books. It is reflective of the style of poetry in the early 19th century.A rectangular piece of paper with a typed poem titled, "We Come" by Hilda C. Temple-Kerr.poetry literature kerr-hilda-temple -

Book, Thalaba the destroyer Vol 1, 1821
This book was written in 1801 in an epic poem form. It is unrhymed. It falls into the category of fantasy. The original owner of this book seems to have been John Bland. He is most important in the early history of Port Fairy and had a business in Port Fairy with John Cowtan (corn millers and general merchants). The Cowtans originally had land in the vicinity of the Cassady property of Boughton, Merri River (in Caramut Road near Cassady’s Bridge today) and were related by marriage to the Cassadys. A later owner of the book was William Anderson whose father came to the Yangery district in 1854 and established the property of Rosemount and William remained in this area until his death in 1909. The Andersons were related by marriage to the Cassadys and this book came to us following a clearance sale at the Cassady property, Boughton. This book is of great interest less for its literary content than for its ownership which probably dates back to the 1840s. It is associated with the families of Bland, Cowtan, Cassady and Anderson, all early settlers in Warrnambool and district. This is a brown leather-covered book of 271 pages. The cover has gold decorative borders and patterns and gold lettering. The pages are gilt-edged. The book is the fourth edition of volume one of a Robert Southey poem and has a Preface and Books 1 to 5 with Notes. The inscriptions are handwritten in black ink. One signature has not been deciphered. ‘Wm.
