Gallipoli pebbles
The stones are a momento from Anzac Cove, the site of the Australian Infantry Force's landing in 1915.Landing at ANZAC Cove , 25 April 1915 Description As part of the attempt to seize the Gallipoli Peninsula in order to suppress the Turkish defences guarding the Dardanelles, military landings were made at Cape Helles at the southern tip of the peninsula (the main landing) and on the west coast near Ari Burnu. At this secondary objective two Divisions of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed in the darkness and faced rugged and difficult country. Units mixed up on their arrival rushed inland and became separated from the main force, which came under growing fire from the Turkish defenders. While Turkish reinforcements arrived, the ANZAC position became increasingly precarious as the assaulting force failed to secure their initial objectives. Falling back on improvised and shallow entrenchments the ANZACs held on for a crucial first night. By that first evening 16,000 men had been landed; of those over 2,000 Australians had been killed or wounded. www.awm.gov.au ANZAC Cove landingTwo smooth stones. Both would fit into the palm of a medium sized hand. One is dark, almost black, the other lighter, with a pinkish tinge.Catalogued as 108A and 108 Banzac cove, gallipoli -

Work on paper - On the Trail of the Lone Pine, Pine Cones from the Gallipoli Battlefield, April - June 2011
Sergeant Keith McDowell gave a cone he collected from Gallipoli to his aunt to try and grow. One seed was planted in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and another at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. These pine trees have symbolic importance as a representation of Australian soldiers' "tenacity and fortitude". They are an important link to the remembrance of those men and women from Ballarat who saw action in World War 1.3 pages (pp.44-46). p.44 in black print on white paper, a photograph of the planting of one of the pines in 1934 at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. p.45 is a coloured picture of the pine in Canberra. p46 has a history of the seeds brought from Gallipoli by Smith and Mcdowell on the right-hand side of the page and a photograph of the Pines being labelled. There is a column about these trees down the left-hand side of the page.None john garner, doctor, john garner collection, ballarat botanical gardens, friends of the ballarat botanical gardens, the lone pine, gallipoli, anzacs, sergeant keith mcdowell, lance corporal benjamin smith, aleppo pine, turkish pine, pinus halepensis, pinus brutia, gardens, ballarat -

Book - Tobruk to Turkey : with the Army of the Nile, Frank Clune, 1949
One of a series of travel books produced by Frank Clune. This volume details his travels and observances in the Middle East during 1942. Clune was an honorary commissioner of the Australian Comforts Fund. Clune allegedly “left a very bad impression” on General Sir Thomas Blamey for his ‘irregular methods and indiscreet utterances’ about the British ‘only playing at war’. Blamey therefore ensured that Clune was subject to military censorship. Royalties from this book and funds raised during a lecture tour promoting it in 1943 were donated to the Australia Comforts Fund to whose voluntary workers it is dedicated.non-fictionOne of a series of travel books produced by Frank Clune. Poster - War with Turkey, Ballarat Horticultural Society promotional Poster "War With Turkey", 1914
A small flyer sent out locally to members and for wider advertising around Ballarat by the Ballarat Horticultural Society in 1914.This poster demonstrates the belief early in World War I that the war would soon be over. It highlights the lack of significance given to the war at this early stage. It is also a rare survivor of up-beat regional Australian (Ballarat) advertising during the Great War.ballarat, horticultural society, spring show, war, turkey., world war i, the great war, horticulture
