The photo shows Geelong No. 2 in Moorabool St at the intersection with Ryrie St. The tram has the destination of North. The tram is in its modified form that provides for one-man operation. In the photo are Edments, Savoia Cafe, Commercial Bank of Australia, and the T&G building. The photo has been dated between 1935 when the tram was converted and 1939 when the bar neon traffic lights were installed at the intersection. The photograph was taken from a Victorian Railways glass negative held at the State Library of Victoria. In 1904, at the initiative of Premier Thomas Bent, Victorian Railways was authorised to build an electric street railway from St Kilda to Brighton. The line opened in early 1906 and was one of Melbourne's first electric tram services. On Saturday 5 May, 1906, Premier Thomas Bent performed the opening ceremony of the St Kilda to Brighton electric tramway at the Brighton Terminus, presided over by Cr. Thomas Wilson, Mayor of Brighton, with refreshments following at the Brighton Yacht Club. About 60 representatives were in attendance including the Railway Commissioners and the mayor and councillors of St Kilda, Brighton and Caulfield. The newspapers of the day commented that the cars were the best yet seen in Australia, possessing a great advantage over the Sydney trams, in that they are easily entered, and the glass windbreak was another improvement in design. The Sandhurst and Electric Tramway Company was the first to blaze a trail when it introduced battery trams to Bendigo in June 1890. Unfortunately they had made a serious miscalculation, as the batteries quickly proved inadequate for the hilly terrain of Bendigo. After a couple of months battery trams ceased running and were later replaced by steam trams in February 1892. Steam trams were a reliable means of transport and successfully moved Bendigonians around for ten years, but the onset of the recession forced the Bendigo Tramways Company to sell up in 1899 to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria (ESCo) who continued to run steam trams until 1902. This turn-of-the-century sale led to the introduction of electric trams to Bendigo in April 1903. These were a success from the very beginning. During peak hour people would be standing in the aisles, in the doorways, even on the running boards on the outside of the tram. In addition, the trams were also the first option for deliveries. Parcels, newspapers, movie reels for the picture theatres and even mail bags found their way onto the trams; sent from outlying post offices to the GPO in the city centre. At the end of World War I the Victorian Government constituted the new semi-government instrumentality, the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SEC). The SEC was to take over all privately owned power generating companies in Victoria and operate as a state owned monopoly ... Provides information about the two-day enquiry held by the Victorian Transport Regulation board into the SEC operated Ballarat Tramway system. Enquiry held at the Ballarat Court House, by Messrs J Bolster, E V Field (Chairman) and J O Mactier of the TRB. Two photos show the Board and some of the attendees. Page 2 of the 3 April report; the acting assistant manager of the SEC advised that the tramway was unsafe, deaths due to collisions with trams, costs of refurbishing the tracks and tramcars and employment issues. Evidence was also given by the Mayor of Ballarat, Cr. Nicholson, Ballarat Town Clerk Mr Maddern, Barry Wilkins, H A Davis local bus operators. The Board considered whether the existing services could be replaced by private operators, or a publicly operated service, including the cost of operators. Also submissions from Mr O'Shea of the ATOMEA, Ballarat Trams and Labor Council, and Chamber of Manufacturers. Used as a souvenir ticket and postcard on the opening day of the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria (ESCo), Ballarat tramways on 18 August 1905, Has been punched for the Mount Pleasant and Orphanage - Grenville St section. Collected by David Budge - 1879 - 1974, son of William and Mary Budge of Trevor St Ballarat, who worked for the Victorian Railways as a blacksmith residing in Walnut St Carnegie. Demonstrates a souvenir item for the opening of the electric tramways in Ballarat in the form of a postcard, which could be sent to others as a souvenir of the new tram system in Ballarat. Has a strong association with the collector.Postcard - size Souvenir Tram ticket, printed using blue ink on one side with fare, photos of power station, engine room, boiler room and a tram & No.2341 stamped on edge. By 1917 the tramways system was divided into regions including: the Melbourne Cable Tram Service; Prahran - Malvern Electric Trams; Hawthorn Electric Trams; Melbourne, Brunswick and Coburg Electric Trams; and Brighton Beach Electric Trams. The old Outer Circle railway line is marked as ending in Deepdene, with the remainder of the line to Fairfield marked as 'Unused'. The Kew tram along High Street in 1917 ended at the Harp Junction. One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office.The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs.
