This silk and lace evening dress was made for Lily Clara Wishart (Mayoress of Kew 1906-7) by her niece, Mary Clara Cresswell (nee Skewes), who according to the donor, Lily's great niece, was a 'high class dressmaker'. This polonaise is part of the Netta Fuller Collection.Netta Fuller and her husband Alec were long-term residents of Kew. As a boy, Alec had attended East Kew Primary School and was later highly involved in the Kew Presbyterian Church during the 1950s and 60s. Netta's passion was for historic clothing and its exhibition. In 1985, Netta Fuller and Elizabeth Pace launched a parade of garments sponsored by Kew Historical Society at Holy Trinity Church, Kew. The parade was called 'Downunder Dressmakers' and included a collection of over fifty items of clothing dating from 1800 to 1984. The collection included dresses, hats, scarfs, capes, sporting costumes etc. The core of the parade consisted of a collection of 19th century costumes worn by the ancestors of a Miss Gertrude Murray, a resident of Blackburn. In sourcing items for her collections, Netta Fuller collected costumes stored in old trunks and wardrobes, or even purchased from opportunity shops. (During the period in which she collected and exhibited costumes, the latter could often be a reliable source for the purchase of historic and aesthetically significant costumes.) Not satisfied with purchasing authentic costumes of the period, Netta also used these as models for artistic recreations. Following her retirement from both collecting and exhibiting, Netta Fuller donated a number of 19th Century garments to the Kew Historical Society's costume collection. A number of garments were parts of costumes such as bodices, while others were complete outfits. Some of the latter exhibit signs of old damage, however very few of the costumes had been modified to enable them to be worn in exhibitions. Provenance, apart from that the costumes were donated by Netta Fuller after 1985 is limited to donor information, although some of her donations may have originally been part of the collection owned by the Murray family. While the costumes are old and therefore historic, provenance is less important than the representativeness and/or rarity of the costumes. Similarly, the costumes need to be evaluated as a group and separately, considering their aesthetic and artistic significance as well a their age.Long train of cream, watered silk taffeta lined with silk net. The furriers Keitel were established in Australia early in the Twentieth Century. The business was initially in Port Melbourne in Beach Street and later in Lt Collins Street, Melbourne. In 1916, 1918, 1924, and 1927 there were newspaper reports of robberies at the business; an indication of the monetary value of furs in the past. There was an interesting connection to Jewish refugees to Australia reported in Australian newspapers in 1939, which relates to the Keitel family. OFFICER'S WIDOW A REFUGEE MELBOURNE, Wednesday. - A widow, whose husband was killed in action while a German officer in the Great, War, reached Melbourne in the Marella, a refugee from Nazi Germany. She is Mrs L. Fuchs, and on the wharf she met her, brother, Mr K. Feitel, a Melbourne furrier, for the first time in 40 years. Another, brother, Mr I. Feitel, travelled with her from Vienna. Mr I Feitel is a watchmaker, and has been in the business in Australia for about 50 years. He has brought with him an agency to establish here, for the well-known Swiss watchmaking company, Chaux-de-fonds. ESCAPED INTO HOLLAND. Having escaped from Germany into Holland, 80 refugees brought to Australia in the Marella were taken by Dutch ships to Batavia, where they Joined the Marella. Seven landed in Brisbane, 40 in Sydney, and 33 in Melbourne. There was only a few British subjects in the ship. The Jewish refugees include a cattle breeder, a lawyer for a Viennese bank, dentists, clothing , manu facturers, machinery experts, and general merchants. This wedding dress was worn by the grandmother of Val Warren.Raw silk wedding dress. The full length dress has lace on the bodice and long sleeves. Other decorative elements include finely pleated silk panels on the bodice, an insert on the skirt and on the cuffs of the sleeves The dress features extensive use of both utilitarian and decorative buttons that are covered in the same silk fabric as the dress. The final photograph shows two early repairs to the dress. Lydia Edwards in 'How to Read A Dress (Bloomsbury Academic, 2017), when describing a 1912 dress in the McCord Museum notes that: 'In 1911-12 the use of buttons for both fastening and decoration was extremely popular, the American women's magazine The Delineator declaring at the end of 1911 that "one cannot use buttons to liberally in the present mode".' While lingerie dresses were produced for and worn by women between 1900 and 1920, the main period in which they were worn was between 1900 and 1910. This elaborately detailed example is believed to date from 1912-1918.The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. The collection is also significant in that it includes the work of a large number of Melbourne designers from the 1960s to the 1990s.Three-quarter-length, white cotton voile lingerie dress. The dress feature extensive embroidery on the bodice and skirt, probably constructed from pre-embroidered fabric, rather than hand embroidered. In addition to the embroiderd panels, there is extensive use of white lace insertions. The dress has short sleeves to teh elbow and lace cuffs. The dress is date after the Edwardian Period due to the absence of tucks and frills. The bodice has puffed leg-of-mutton sleeves and is heavily encrusted with large grey artificial pearls and steel beads of the period. The skirt is cut to allow for a long train at the back. Grey pearls and steel beads are similarly used on the right side of the front of the skirt. Metallic braid may have been added at a later date. The outfit has been much altered over time. There is evidence of shattered silk in parts of the garment. Printed on a strap at the waist is the label of Peter Robinson, Oxford Street/Regent Street.Peter Robinson.
