Heamostop is a haemostatic agent, prescribed for the management of blood loss in menorrhagia, and after surgery. It reduces bleeding from very small blood vessels (capillaries). The chemical in this vial is in a powder form. This product is now supplied in the form of tablets and injections. The text on the vial reads "Haemostop stops bleeding. After swabbing the wound, Haemostop should be sprinkled or sprayed on as quickly as possible. Enough should be used to leave a definite dry residue on the wound. Where the blood oozes through the powder, more powder should be applied."This vial is an example of chemicals used with surgery and excessive bleeding in the early 20th century. It is also an example of pharmaceutical manufacturing and packaging.Glass vial with cork stopper and printed paper label that includes instructions. Hazel Flynn, History's most daring moments
The human psyche, when confronted by the all-but-impossible, can produce the most extraordinary reactions, acts of heroism, self-sacrifice, endurance and sheer grit that in many instances remain unbelievable. Whether these are the product of the extreme pressures of warfare, acts of faith or compassion, or examples of utter tenacity and determination against all odds, the outcomes are incredible. Many of the behind-the-scenes stories have remained secret, until now. No other book gathers together so many riveting and heroic tales of rescue and survival in a single volume. Divided into seven chronological sections, this book provides revealing insights and explains the significance of each operation, although not all proved to be successful. Detailed maps of each encounter, timelines, diagrams, archival photographs and official documents accompany these gripping stories.Index, ill (some colour), portraits (some colour), maps (some colour) p.254.non-fictionThe human psyche, when confronted by the all-but-impossible, can produce the most extraordinary reactions, acts of heroism, self-sacrifice, endurance and sheer grit that in many instances remain unbelievable. Photograph, Gateway to Ngok Tavak, 1/05/1968 12:00:00 AM
In May 1968, in the western jungle of Vietnam near Laos, led by Australian Captain J White, 11th Mobile Strike Force Company (MSF) occupied an old French fort on a hill named Ngok Tavak tasked with improving allied intelligence-gathering capabilities in the area. However, with enemy activity increasing, on May 4th, 44 US Marines, 35 CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defence Group) and two 105mm Howitzer field guns arrived as reinforcement from the Special Forces base at Kham Duc. By May 9th, Captain White’s company numbered about 200 men. Although in a good defensive position, coming towards them was the Iron Brigade of the 2nd Division of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). At 03:00 on May 10th, the attack on Ngok Tavak began. The NVA, led by Major Dang Ngoc Mai, poured through the entrance at the eastern wall quickly occupying most of the fort. By midday the next day, Captain White had lost 40 Nung soldiers and 11 Marines with over 70 others badly wounded. Realising he could not withstand another attack, Captain White decided to abandon Ngok Tavak. Once the wounded were evacuated, Captain White ordered strike aircraft to blast a ‘corridor’ through the surrounding enemy cordon using napalm. By early afternoon, what remained of the defenders escaped through the ‘corridor’ and helicopters eventually flew them to Kham Duc. Survival now : the human transformation, 1982
This book has been described as New Age (Reverend Paul Seiler, The New Age Movement, http://tinyurl.com/cairnsNE). Seiler provides the following quotations from Cairns' book: "The new culture will be a culture of conservation, of a respect for all forms of life, of an appreciation that the essential importance is within each human person." "The first consciousness, a female-centred one, brought the first humanising forces in the evolution of the species. The second consciousness, that of patriarchy, transformed it and gave man fantastic power to build and destroy but finally to destroy himself. The third consciousness will be whole - the child, the woman, the man, the earth and the cosmos. The signs of it can be seen everywhere. Aquarius is rising."Social evolution.
