Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. Born in Hammersmith, London, England in 1903, Ernie May migrated to Australia at the age of 19 years old. A printer by trade, Ernie worked on the land at Woodburn, near Wonthaggi, then near Smithton, Tasmania. He then returned to his trade at the Launceston Daily Telegraph and then with the Rainbow Argus in the Victorian Mallee. Arriving in Wodonga in 1927, Ernie was employed by Mr Charles Ryan who at the time owned the "Wodonga Sentinel" newspaper. He quickly became involved in community activities. Ernie was President of the Border and Northeast Band Association, Secretary of Wodonga Rifle Club for 20 years and Secretary of the Public Library for 15 years. When Ernie May was Wodonga Bandmaster, the Wodonga Band played at Saturday afternoon football matches as well as other public appearances. At that time the Wodonga Band had 30 members. Ernie also conducted his own dance band. In 1952, Mr May and his wife moved to Sale, gaining employment firstly with the Enterprise Press, then the Gippsland Times. In 1957 he started up a monthly paper at Phillip Island. Not content with so many years as Bandmaster at Wodonga, Ernie May became Bandmaster for Phillip Island's brass band. Else Oertel and her daughter Else-Lore were interned in Camp 3A from 1940. Her husband was not interned as he was on a business trip to Germany when war broke out. Friedel Dehnel "Tante Fiffi" made the authentic Bavarian doll and clothes. Friedel, wife of Walter Dehnel, arrived as a young woman from Austria, working in the Victorian snowfields as a chef and was a champion skier. She then became a dressmaker for Melbourne society and insisted that she be interned to be with her husband. She made costumes for the internment camp plays and took over her husband's duties as a cook for Camp A when he was locked up for "insubordination". She was deported with her husband back to Germany after the war and cared for her orphaned nephews and nieces in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.Hand made Authentic Bavarian doll. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from middle-class working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who made all of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. Her father served in Civil Defence during the war. Marjorie was in Birmingham during the war and remembered sheltering with her young daughter, Anne (Quaadgras) in the air raid shelter during bombing. These items are examples of handcrafted items and reflect the handcraft skills of women during the early 20th century.Two hand-made nightcaps. 2483.22 is a fine ecru coloured net with a pink trim. 2483.23 is made of lace and ribbon and edged with a crochet band. This plate came from St Ann’s School, Warrnambool. It was probably used in the boarding house section and may have been used for either soup or cereal. St Ann’s School opened in 1872 as St Mary’s Convent of Mercy School, Wyton, with the latter name being the name of the ex-John Ardlie house in which the school was initially established. There were eight foundation Sisters of Mercy. The name changed to St Ann’s Convent School in 1888 and in 1991 it amalgamated with the Warrnambool Christian Brothers College to form Emmanuel College.This plate is an interesting memento of St. Ann’s School in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century.This is a round china plate with a green and yellow band around the inner edge of the plate. There is also the emblem of the school with the name and motto. The plate has a dip or recess in the middle. The father of James McMeekin, with his brother, William, established their business in Warrnambool in the early 1880s with land, estate and insurance agencies and a produce store, including a dairy produce trade exporting butter to South Australia, South Africa and England. The business was initially in Fairy Street Warrnambool and then moved to Kepler Street. James McMeekin’s son, also James Parker McMeekin (1885-1935) continued on with the business until his death.His pen is of interest as an example of the type of promotion item issued by business men in Warrnambool in the 1930s. This is a pen with a brown-coloured wooden body tapering to a point at its end. It has a metal band at the other end with a metal nib inserted. This item was donated by the daughter of Ena Heazlewood, a former Warrnambool resident. Mary Josephine (Ena) Todd was born in Warrnambool in 1920. She worked as a hairdresser at Josephine’s Salon in Warrnambool. In 1942 she married Jack Heazlewood, also of Warrnambool. He was serving on the H.M.A.S. Sydney at that time. Later they moved to Sydney. Pantaloons were worn particularly in the 19th century to cover the legs under voluminous dresses such as crinolines. This item may have belonged to earlier female members of either the Todd or the Heazlewood families.This item is of interest as an example of vintage women’s clothing and as an item donated by the daughter of a former Warrnambool resident. These are white cotton pantaloons or panties, hand-stitched. The waist band has two slits with cotton ties either side.
