In the byways category are views of some iof the Shire's bicycle paths including then recently completed sections of the Main Yarra Trail at Lower Plenty.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years. The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. This gown was worn by Shirley Falkinder (nee Ogden). She was the principal nurse educator and lecturer at the Ballarat Base Hospital from 1973-1985 when nurse education was hospital based. She was seconded to prepare the Accreditation document for a three year "Diploma of Applied Nursing", which commenced at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1986 and she retired in 1989. Shirley continued her interest in the education of nurses and became the Vice President of the Ballarat University College Council in 1990 and President in 1991.A black polyester and wood academic gown with a wide red (edged with white) silk lapel. Across the shoulders and below the back yoke there are padded pin tucks which form gathers. The long sleeves reach to within 8 cm of the hemline of the garment. Francis Matthew (Frank) Child (1928 – 2020) was the son of Bernard Child (1907 – 1995). Bernard was the son of Ethel May Madden and an unknown father. When Ethel married Ted Child in 1908 Bernard was raised by Ted’s parents Francis and Martha Child. Bernard married Dulcie Paice (1904 – 1990) and they had one son, Frank Child, before they divorced in 1943. This uniform was worn by Lieutenant Colonel D J Hunter OAM RFD when serving with the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Sandra JOHNSTONE (1936-01/1991) Worked California, USA Sandra Johnstone undertook graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley, California. From 1957 she worked as a studio potter. Huntingdale Golf club was the site of many social events for Legatees and Widows clubs. This appears to be an annual major fundraising golf day. An article in the Answer in 1993 says that the association with the Huntingdale golf club began in 1933 and over the years over $255,000 has been raised for Legacy. The Open Mixes Foursomes is usually held in December and the Ladies Day is annually in October. Two photos of journalist Edwin Maher signing copies of his books for Legatees at Legacy House. Presumably he had attended a Tuesday lunch meeting as a guest speaker. The books appear to be 'Stop the World I want to get on: How to drive yourself sane' (published 1993) and 'The Edwin Maher Scrapbook' (published 1990). Edwin Maher is a New Zealand born TV journalist who was a former ABC presenter. He helped present the Legacy Anzac Commemoration for Students in 1998.A record of a well known person attending Legacy House. This school exercise book contains mostly English Literature material produced by Ena O'Keefe at St. Ann's College, Warrnambool and dates from the 1921. It seems to be about Year 10 standard. St. Ann's College began in 1872 as a Convent of Mercy School for Girls, changed its name to St. Ann's in 1888 and amalgamated with the Christian Brothers' College in 1990 to form the present-day Emmanuel College. No information is available on Ena O'Keefe but she may have come from the Winslow district. Cr. Mary Grant of Hurstbridge served as the North Riding Councillor for the Shire of Eltham. First elected in 1990 and required to retire by 1995. She was the Shire President at least 1992-1993. Source: Shire of Eltham 1993 Handbook. It is believed that this photograph was taken after Cr. Grant's term as President. EDHS Newsletter No. 216, May 2014, p4 Mayoral Chain of Office R.C. McLellan and family donated a Chain of Office to the Shire of Eltham to be worn by the Shire President on formal occasions. With the amalgamation of councils in 1994 this was transferred to the Shire of Nillumbik to be used during the mayoral year. Eltham had a Shire President whereas Nillumbik has a Mayor. Many municipalities have a collar or chain of office for ceremonial purposes. Traditionally these symbolise or denote the formal leadership role of office. This chain is part of the Visual Art Collection held by Nillumbik Shire Council and is now on display in the Council Chamber area in the Civic Centre at Greensborough. Matcham Skipper and Myra Skipper were commissioned by the McClellan family to create the gold-plated silver chain shown being worn by Eltham Shire President Peter Graham in 1990, with Bob McLellan and Matcham Skipper (centre). Copy of copper bas reliefs - Capricorn and Aquila. Made by patients of the Bendigo Psychiatric Centre as part of their inpatient therapy activities. The bas reliefs represent the constellations Capricorn and Aquila. Once completed, they were used to identify the Aquila and Capricorn patient areas at the Psychiatric Centre. The Bendigo Psychiatric Centre, a forty bed hospital, opened in 1970 and closed in the 1990's. It was replaced by the Alexander Bayne Centre at the Bendigo Hospital and the John Bomford Centre, Kennington, named in honour of Dr. John Bomford. Dr. Bomford was a pioneer of Bendigo psychiatric services. He practised as a psychiatrist in Bendigo from 1964 until December 1970, when he retired.bendigo, hospital, psychiatric centre

Kevin Parker was born in 1942 in Melbourne and studied Architecture at RMIT and from 1965-1990 worked as a freelance architectural illustrator. He continued this when he moved to Deddick in East Gippsland in 1991. In 2001 -2002 he began working on series of drawings about Mc Killops Bridge and environs for exhibition at Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale Victoria (Oct 2003). These drawings and prints feature McKillop's Bridge an the item is a compilation from a folder usually sold in the Slab Hut (Orbost Visitor Information Centre). The Sun News-Pictorial, also known as The Sun, was a morning daily tabloid newspaper in Melbourne, Australia, established in 1922 and closed in 1990. It was part of The Herald and Weekly Times stable of Melbourne newspapers. For more than fifty years it was the Australian newspaper with the largest circulation. This special edition was issued as a souvenir of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as monarch of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon took place on 2 June 1953 at westminster Abbey. On the 2nd June 1953, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place and the commonwealth countries, including Australia joined in the celebration. This box was crafted from a portion of one of the original oak trees in the Jarrahmond WW11 Avenue of Honour.The Avenue was planted in 1955 and linked the farms of the two servicemen from Jarrahmond who lost their lives in WWII. It consisted of English Oaks interspersed with flowering peaches and cherries. Wood for the box was collected in the early 1990's by Stan Weatherall following a windstorm. Stan had the timber rough-sawn into planks by local sawmiller Max Reynolds. The timber was stored for a number of years before being given to Don McLean.A hand-made oak box. The inside base is lined in green felt. The lid is single hinged. the front panel displays a radiating pattern in the grain of the oak wood that resembles the rising sun badge of the Australian Defence Forces. Two brass pins are symbols of Australian military regalia. Inside the box is an envelope with information and letters on the manufacture of the box and presentation to Orbost. The Bendigo business R.J. Conroy was a bicycle agency in the 1940s. Elliott Bros of Bendigo Pty Ltd was started in 1980 by three brothers Hayden, Daryl and Noel Elliott. They purchased the motorcycle dealership known as RJ Conroy from Dick Conroy. John Dudley was a well-known local artist who lived in the Shire during the 50s, 60’s and 70s. He was represented by Wiregrass Gallery in Eltham. Formerly two separate galleries: The Eltham Gallery and The Wiregrass Gallery. The Wiregrass Gallery opened on 4th February 1977 at Station Entrance, Eltham, Victoria and closed on the 19th November 1989 when its lease expired. The gallery then moved in early 1990 to 559 Main Road Eltham, the premises of the Eltham Gallery and from then on operated under the name Eltham Wiregrass Gallery. The wheel came in a container from Liechenstein - Anitque Export Establishment (P.O. Box 21 498, FI - 9493 Mauren, Liechtenstein). It came with a number of dressers and tables. The flax on the original bobbin was present when Mrs Fabb purchased the wheel. Mrs Fabb purchsed the wheel c. 1985-1990 from a secondhand/antique shop in Para Road, Greensborough, Melbourne. The first of the Vermont Primary School buildings was erected on 1872. In 1907 a room was built onto the west side of the building and a new classroom and cloakroom were erected in 1922. Due to rising numbers and traffic volume, Vermont Progress Association urged the government to relocate the school buildings to a less prominent site, and new school buildings were erected in Nurlendi Street in the 1950's.
