Memorabilia - Jacket, embroidered
Local tailors made these jackets with variations of the city name on the back: Vung Tau, Saigon, Vietnam. This item was purchased and worn by Lance-Corporal Ronald J Stibbe of the Royal Australian Engineers, who served in 1st Field Squadron in Vietnam from 21 Oct 1966 until 10 Oct 1967.Black cotton souvenir jacket with collar and front zip closure. On the back is a map of Vietnam with cities labelled, all in coloured embroidery. Above and below the map is white lettering. The upper sleeves of the jacket are embroidered with a dragon, whilst the front of the jacket features an embroidered tiger head and good luck symbol. It is lined with white silk.Adhesive tag "RJ Stibbe" Embroidered On back - 'WHEN I DIE I'LL GO TO HEAVEN BECAUSE / I'VE SPENT MY TIME IN HELL / SAIGON'. The seven people on the deck of a ship at Station Pier some time in 1955 are: Front L-R: Arthur and Sia (Aspasia) Koutsouvelis, George and Ioulia Raftopoulos and Effie Cominos. George and Ioulia Raftopoulos are the parents of Sia and Effie. Back L-R: Chrisoula Raftopoulos and Nick Sikiotis. Family would go to Station Pier to either welcome or farewell relatives who departing to or arriving from Greece. Very few of the early Ithacan migrants returned to their homeland. It wasn't until the 1950s and 60s that travel back home to visit family became more common. In the early days of Ithacan Philanthropic Society most of the men, many of whom were single, worked around the CBD. The would gather at the club rooms at lunch times and after work to socialise, learn news from back home and sometimes enjoy a game of cards. The 'Club' was a home away from home for these men. Decades later, in the 1990s retired members often met at the clubrooms to play a social game of cards.
