Royal District Nursing Service (now known as Bolton Clarke)
Photograph - Photogtaph, Portrait, black and white, c.1980
This photograph is a visual record of Mr. Ken Mason who was appointed to the Committee of the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) In March 1975 and held the position of Honorary Treasurer from August 1975 until October 1979 when he was appointed President of the Board of Directors, a position he held until 1993. Women held the role as President of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) from its founding in 1885 for the next 94 years. Mrs. John Simson was President from 1885 until late 1888. For these first three years Mr. T. Harlin was Honorary Secretary of the Society and Mr. McKinnon the Honorary Treasurer; from then these roles were held by women. The other formal positions, and the vast majority of members of the Committee, were women, with up to four Reverend gentlemen being on the Committee each year over the next years. Throughout this time the Society expanded in the areas it serviced, commencing in inner Melbourne and expanding throughout the Melbourne suburbs. It began with their two Trained nurses (Nurses) living in their own home close to the area (district) in which they carried out their nursing care walking the streets of inner Melbourne. From 1891 the Society rented several premises for use as a Nurses Home and for administrative purposes and where the bicycles the MDNS purchased for use by their Nurses in 1903 could be housed. In 1914 the Society purchased their own premises at 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood and in 1919 there first four cars were purchased. The Society underwent further expansion with the building of the After-Care Home (later Hospital) next to their Nurses Home in Victoria Parade which meant the running of two Divisions – the After-Care and the District Nursing Division. The one Committee ran the two Divisions until the time of the separation of the Society and After-Care in 1957. In late 1888 Lady Janet Clarke became President and held this role until her death in 1908, except for extended times when she was overseas when Lady O'Loughlen held the role. Mrs. Hood was President from 1909-1911, Mrs. F.A. Lang from 1912-1914, Mrs. F. Tatham from 1915-1923, Mrs. G.G. Henderson from 1924-1947, Mrs. F. E. Shillabeer from 1948-1949, Lady Lowe from 1950-1951 and Mrs. George Simpson from 1952-1957. When the Society and After-Care separated in 1957 the District Nursing Division became the Melbourne District Nursing Service with its own Committee. Mrs. J.P. Major, formerly Miss Beatrice Mary Williams who was a Sister with the Society, and became its Matron before marrying Dr. Major, became the first President in 1957 until her death in 1958 when Mrs. George Simpson became President. She held this role until 1964, then Mrs. E.G. Wilson held the role from October 1964 to mid 1967. During this time MDNS was granted Royal patronage and the name changed to Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) in 1966. Mrs. D. Hallenstein held the role of President from 1967 to 1974 and during this time RDNS was granted a Coat of Arms. Mrs. J.L. Frew M.B., B.S. was appointed President in October 1974 and held the position until October 1979 when Mr. K.W.G. Mason took over the role. During these years, the RDNS service continued to expanded with more Centres built throughout the Metropolitan area, more Trained Nurses employed and the RDNS now had an increased fleet of vehicles. Black and white head and shoulder photograph of Mr. Ken Mason who has thinning white hair and is wearing glasses. He is dressed in a grey self striped suit and is wearing a white shirt and a light grey tie which has black and white stripes.rdns, royal district nursing service, rdns president, melbourne district nursing society, mdns, mr k.w.g. mason -

Scrap Book, 1995 Grand Final Scrap Book, 1995
A Scrap Book dedicated to Carlton's 1995 GF Triumph defeating Geelong A almost complete record of Newspaper Articles dedicated to Carlton's GF win over Geelong in 1995. It was Carlton's 16th Premiership after 16 wins in a row and became known as "sweet sixteen" In 1995 the AFL would admit the 16th team to the competion, the Fremantle Dockers. This would continue the expansion of the traditional VFL, after the West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears had been admitted in 1987 and the Adelaide Crows had been admitted in 1991. Carlton won their 16th Premiership in 1995 by defeating Geelong by 61 points in front of over 90,000 fans at the MCG. Over the season, the Blues would set a new benchmark for dominance in a single season with only 2 losses relatively early in the season, to lowly placed St Kilda and Sydney, with a string of 16 successive wins to take their 16th premiership. The season itself was just brilliant to watch as a fan, with stars in defence (Silvagni, Dean, Sexton), midfield (Williams, Bradley, Ratten) and attack (Kernahan, Pearce and Spalding), and all led by Captain Stephen Kernahan. There was a great blend of seasoned veterans (Silvagni, Kernahan and Williams) to young up & comers, including the brilliant Anthony Koutoufides who would have a breakout year at the start of a stellar career. By season's end, Carlton would be 4 games clear of the next best team, Geelong, demonstrating how far above the rest of the competition we were. Throughout the year, our only losses were to Bottom 8 teams, St Kilda and Sydney, and we did not drop a game to any team that played in the finals. In the finals, we defeated Brisbane, the Kangaroos and Geelong, with the Brisbane game being the tightest as the young Bears gave their all. If anything, the 1995 Finals campaign was a testament to Stephen Silvagni who would give up only 1 goal in the 3 games, keeping Darryl White (Brisbane), Wayne Carey (Kangaroos) and Gary Ablett (Geelong) well held. On the day itself, the Blues were supreme as they pounded the Cats into submission. Greg Williams would win the Norm Smith Medal for his 32 possessions and 5 goals, to add to his two Brownlow medals and now Premiership Medal. It was a fantastic year to be a Carlton fan. Come season's end, Coach David Parkin went on record to say that to maintain our success changes would be required. Troy Bond, Ben Harrison and James Cook, each having played games in 1995 but not making it for the Grand Final, would be traded (plus some draft picks) in return for Adrian Hickmott, Justin Murphy, Craig Devonport and Ben Sexton. Best: S.Silvagni, M.Crowe, J.James, B.Cox, G.Donaldson, B.Williams. Injuries: Nil Game Review It was a tale of contrasting preparation for the Grand Finalists, with the Blues having been involved in three games decided by less than a goal in a row, while Essendon hadn't played for three weeks. Leading up to the match Essendon had injury problems, with Terry Rodgers unable to take the field and ruckman Geoff Leek requiring a pain killing injection to get him up for the game. Leek actually fooled the Essendon match committee by passing his fitness test (during which he was asked to kick a medicine ball) by using his good leg - not the suspect one. When the ball was bounced to start the Grand Final, Essendon straight away looked like the fresher side, and slammed on 6 goals to one to take control. Carlton dug deep in the second term and fought back, kicking 4 majors and closing the gap to only 13 points by the half-time break. The Bombers surged again in the third term, with their forwards looking lively and dangerous. The Blues were just out-gunned, and trailed by 20 points at the last break. The game became spiteful in the first few minutes of the last quarter, as Essendon overwhelmed the Blues defence. They kicked three quick, unanswered goals to establish a 39-point advantage, and from thenh on had the flag in their bag. As the heat went out of the game, Cross scored a consolation goal for Carlton, but it was a case of too little too late. Best players in a well-beaten Carlton side were Serge Silvagni, who continually stood against the tide, John James and Graham Donaldson up forward, Bob Crowe in defence, and Berkley Cox, who controlled the centre. 1962 Grand Final Team B: 8 John Benetti 18 Peter Barry 16 Maurie Sankey HB: 26 Graeme Anderson 20 Wes Lofts 14 Bob Crowe C: 19 Ian Collins 9 Berkley Cox 30 Murray Kick HF: 13 Graham Donaldson (c) 10 John James 12 John Gill F: 5 Ken Greenwood 22 Tom Carroll 36 Peter Falconer Ruck: 2 John Nicholls (vc) 1 Serge Silvagni 7 Bruce Williams Res: 32 Vasil Varlamos 23 Martin Cross Coach: Ken Hands In: V. Kralcopic Pty Ltd, was a subsidiary of Bendigo-based company GBM Gold and had previously held mining licences around Bendigo, which incorporated sites including Kangaroo Flat, New Moon, Eaglehawk and the associated Woodvale Evaporation Ponds Complex. In August 2019, the Earth Resources Regulator decided not to renew Kralcopic’s three mining licences, due to the company’s inability to provide surety that it could finance its mining activities and site rehabilitation obligations. In October 2020, the company filed legal proceedings in the Supreme Court challenging the decision not to renew these licences. The Supreme Court later upheld the regulator’s decision not to renew the licences. On 23 April 2021, the Federal Court of Australia appointed KPMG as Kralcopic’s liquidators. On 14 May 2021, the liquidator lodged papers with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) to disclaim Kralcopic’s freehold land at Woodvale and parcels of land around the company’s former Bendigo sites, with the land to subsequently become Crown land. The Earth Resources Regulator has put a statutory exemption in place to preclude new mining licence applications on the sites while we undertake rehabilitation. The exemption also provides an opportunity for government to consider future uses of the sites in consultation with the City of Greater Bendigo and the local community. The Earth Resources Regulator holds rehabilitation bonds totalling $5.9 million, which it will use to rehabilitate the former sites.Colour photocopy of original photo. Book, Burwood Boys: Seven stories of success, 2018
The seven stories in this book are told by former residents of Burwood Boys' Home, some of whom arrived there from other residential institutions. The stories provide a window into an earlier era of Melbourne's social history, from the 1930's to the 1970's. These are stories of resilience, good humour and positivity, but also of abandonment, confusion and fear as families made hard decisions. They vary in length, and include one longer extract from an autobiographical work by Hector Davis OAM, who arrived at Burwood, aged eight in 1934.A5, 154 pages; black & white photos and some coloured photosnon-fictionThe seven stories in this book are told by former residents of Burwood Boys' Home, some of whom arrived there from other residential institutions.
