In October 2000, Council invited three artists from the region (Deborah Halpern, Matcham Skipper, Tony Trembath) to submit designs for a sculpture / public art work for the Eltham Town Square. The commission was paid for by supermarket giant Safeway (Woolies) as part of its supermarket permit, which required them to contribute to beautification work in the Town Square.This is the first of three parts. The 'Spirit of Nillumbik' is a celebration of the artistic spirit of Eltham and surrounding communities. Each area is identified through the flora and fauna represented in the panels. The work honours the many creative artists and architects, past and present, who have built homes and shaped lives and livelihoods with their unique creative spirit. Halpern describes her work as a public expression of their individual and collective visions. Halpern acknowledges these contributions to our hand-made history and the influence they have on the character and identity of Eltham and Nillumbik. Five picture and six woven balustrades each made out of welded steel / organic wrought iron and coated with wax. Imagery (flora - plants, landscapes and fauna - animals, birds, reptiles, insects) are all based on the local environment. There is also a relevant aboriginal presence amongst each of the panels. Each panel represents the different areas that make up the Shire. 'Water' for Warrandyte, 'Kangaroos' for Christmas Hills, 'Cockatoos and 'Valley Creek Flats' for Hurstbridge, 'Wombats', 'Bluetongues' and 'Possums' for St. Andrews/Kinglake, 'Orchids' for Panton Hill, 'Cows' and 'Grapevines' for the Kangaroo Gound Hill landmark. The Post War Planning Report was prepared by Leslie M. Perrott & Partners: (City Planning Consultants) and according to the report, it was submitted to the Council of the Municipality of Caulfield through its Special Committee on Post War Planning. The report has no evident date however the introduction text suggests that it was prepared before the end of World War II. The report is the only known extant copy and therefore considered rare. Bound report with grey cover titled: "Report to the Post War Planning Committee Caulfield City Council". Interior pages include x83 pages typed text printed on blue print paper; x3 pages copies of black and white photographs; 10 blueprint plans. 86 pages consistent in size with book cover, 10 x blueprint plans varying dimensions, folded and bound within the report. Printed on white sticker on spine of book "LH 994. 51" and on first page inside "CAULFIELD LIBRARY SERVICE REFERENCE BOOK" and on the verso of this page, another stamp with CAULFIELD LIBRARY SERVICE and LH REF 12/7 hand written in black ink and a 14 digit reference number below this. On the back of the last plan in the book, there is a blue stamp with "REFERENCE BOOK TO BE USED IN THE LIBRARY ONLY". Below this is a black and white barcode with a black line through it and a round, blue sticker beside it.

The first local government authority for Marong was the Marong Road District (an early form of single-purpose local government), which was proclaimed on 19 August 1860. Its boundary was altered twice in 1862 and on 12 December 1864 it was re designated as a shire. It absorbed Raywood Borough in 1915, and was proclaimed a Rural City in 1990. On 2 December 1994, with the creation of Greater Bendigo City Council, it was abolished by being amalgamated with Bendigo City, Eaglehawk Borough, Huntly Shire, part of McIvor Shire, part of Metcalfe Shire and Strathfieldsaye Shire to form Greater Bendigo City.Manufactured by Blashki and Son this circular medal hangs from a royal blue gosgrain ribbon. View from Grace Mitchell's shop at the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace Mitchell was probably best known for her Eltham shop at the corner of Mt Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace's memories covered many local identities who were patrons of her shop between 1954 and 1971. From the elevated position of her shop and home Grace was able to view a varied passing parade of Eltham events from ERSILAC, Easter and Eltham Festival parades passing on their way to Eltham Lower Park, circuses in Wingrove Park (then Bremner’s Reserve), roadworks and other happenings. Bremner's Reserve was renamed Wingrove Park c.1970 This photo was from a series of images presented by Grace Mitchell at a Society talk 10 March 1993 on the theme of “My Eltham”. The Eltham Roll of Honour Board was originally commissioned and paid for by the Eltham War Memorial Trust from funds raised by public donation. It was originally hung in the Infant Welfare Centre. In 1999 the Honour Roll Board was removed from the Eltham War Memorial by members of the RSL and relocated to the Eltham RSL sub-branch on Main Road. Following financial collapse of the Eltham RSL sub-branch and merger of the Eltham and Montmorency sub-branches and subsequent sale of the Eltham property, the WW1 obelisk was relocated to a location in front of the Eltham War Memorial. The Honour Roll Board was retrieved by former Eltham District Historical Society President, Harry Gilham in September 2004 who arranged for it to be re-hung in the Eltham War Memorial Hall (former Children's Library) where it was attached to the brick wall face of the west (rear) wall of the Hall (as seen in this photograph). Sometime around late 2018 when Council was investigating the potential sale and development of the Eltham War Memorial, the Eltham Honour Roll Board was once again removed from the Eltham War Memorial by persons unknown, under the pretext of ‘safekeeping,’ to a location outside of the Shire of Nillumbik, in the City of Banyule. In early 2021 Eltham District Historical Society was made aware of the removal of the Honour Roll Board. A formal request was made by EDHS to return this community asset to its rightful place as intended when it was commissioned and paid for by the Eltham War Memorial Trust. This request was rebutted. Nillumbik Shire Council has also since been made aware of the removal of this community asset and formally requested its return prior to Anzac Day, 2021 where it can once again be made accessible to members of the community to pay their respects as originally intended. This photo was taken prior to the building of the replica Police Station to serve as a lunch room. The origional timber weatherboard building had been relocated around the rear of the residence years earlier but had since been demolished due to termite infestation. On February 1, 1854, the first Eltham Post Office was established. At that time, the number of permanent residents would have been fairly small, probably less than 200. In 1855 Thomas Hunniford was appointed as Eltham's postmaster (replacing Frederick Falkiner). He operated the post office from his general store in Maria Street (now Main Road) near Bridge Street (originally facing Bridge Street but later altered to face Main Road). His daughter, Miss Anne Hunniford, was a teacher at Eltham Primary School in her early adult years. Sometime between 1864 and 1868 the management of the post office passed from Thomas Hunniford to his daughter, Anne who managed the Eltham Post Office until illness forced her to retire in 1928. A big improvement in communication was provided for Eltham residents when a telegraph office was established at the post office in 1877. During 1923 a manual telephone exchange was provided at Eltham, the first two subscribers being J.J. O’Connor and Eltham Police Station. Anne was succeeded by her nephew Neville Burgoyne whose family were then running the store, which had been rebuilt and modernised in 1926 to accommodate an expanded post and telegraph office. Anne knew everyone and was respected for her kindly actions in her official and private capacities. In her time there was no official letter delivery to houses; residents were expected to collect their mail at the post office. But if an important letter or telegram arrived, Anne would try to find someone willing to deliver it. Jock Read recalled he started his own private "mail run"; he would charge people 1/- per week to take their letters to the post office for mailing and would return with their mail. Anne died in 1928, aged 73. She is buried in Eltham Cemetery with her mother and with a Burgoyne child born much later. Burgoyne's store was further extended in 1940 and still stands though has undergone several modifications and businesses. In 1954 the post office moved to a shop in the main Eltham shopping centre, then in 1958 a purpose-built post office was opened near the entrance to the railway station. A walk around Little Eltham, 21 June 2017. Eltham’s first industrial area at the end of present day Pitt Street near the Diamond Creek. Just upstream a bit, near these oak trees was the flour mill. The most significant owner of that was Henry Dendy. Better known for founding Brighton but he lived in Eltham longer than he lived in Brighton, during the 1860s. There was also the brewery and slightly downsteam from here was the tannery. The brewery needed fresh clean water so it was upstream from the tannery. The Oak trees were most likely planted during Henry Dendy's time. Showing extensions and renovations to former Woolworths store at Eltham Village, now Coles. The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999.
