Photograph - X2 class tram No. 677, c1950s
Photograph shows X2 class tram 677 parallel to an unknown W2 class tram in Glen Huntly Rd, Elsternwick near Elsternwick Stn. 677 has its single trolley pole set ready to be driven over a crossover and probably onto Point Ormond terminus. Perhaps it is waiting for the City bound W2 to pass. 677's east facing destination blind still reads Elsternwick Rly Stn as it was M&MTB practice on short shuttle services such as this to only show the correct destination on the front of the tram. The photograph was taken in daylight hours with local shops and motor cars in the background. Yields information about X2 class 677 and Point Ormond to Elsternwick Station shuttleBlack and white print with no notes.x2 class tram, 677, elsternwick rly stn, point ormond, w2 class, shuttle -

Book, Ernest Edward Dunlop, The war diaries of Weary Dunlop : Java and the Burma-Thailand railway 1942-1945, 1986
'More than forty years ago Sir Edward Dunlop, then a lieutenant-colonel, began these diaries at the start of his imprisonment by the Japanese in Java and on the Burma-Thailand Railway. His meticulous observations of prison camp life were concealed all through the war; by the time peace cam in 1945, he carried with him a unique record of the lives of prisoners-of-war. As a commanding officer and a surgeon, 'Weary' became a hero and a legend to thousands of Australian and allied prisoners, whose lives were saved with meagre medical supplies and the instruments the medical officers carried on their backs through Java and Thai jungles. He says himself: 'Of some 22,000 who entered captivity, more than 7,000 died or were killed. Of their sufferings... only those who were present can fully comprehend the seeming hopelessness of it all as their bodies wasted and their friends died.' Sir Edward describes how the cmps were organised; he records deaths, cholera epidemics, operations, and torture; his own - rare - despair; the movement of prisoners up and down the line; and his constant struggle to protect the sick from being drafted into Japanese work parties. From February 1942 he was in the following Japanese prison camps; Bandoeng, Tjimahi, Makasura, Changi, Konyu, Hintok, Tarsau, Chungkai and Nakom Patom.' Booklet - Illustrated booklet, Noeline J Kyle 1940- et al, Nurses & Midwives in Australian History: a guide to historical resources, 2015
"Nursing and midwifery have been the occupations of women for centuries and almost every one of us will find an ancestor who engaged in these traditional feminine pursuits. This book, written by experts in nursing history, women's history and family history, provides practical advice on how to research the lives of nurses and midwives, the hospitals they trained and worked in, and is a guide to the many public and private repositories where sources are found in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Nurses and midwives worked in hospitals, refuges, asylums, prisons, charitable institutions and were pioneers of bush nursing, established maternity hospitals and were often important health providers in small communities in past decades. The records of their lives are found in a wide range of places, and as well as online and digitised records, this book also points the researcher toward the myriad of documentary and private records which are useful for writing their lives"--back cover.Illustrated booklet with brown, black and white cover, front cover has title, authors and series names, along with three historical photos, nurses standing under the verandah of a building, handwriting witl a metal nib pen, and a group of nurses wearing capes and veils. Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Album - Photographic album, Ports of call with the M/S Mongabarra from December 1st 1949 to July 23rd 1950, 1949
The album tells the story of ports visited by Allan Charles Quinn during his service on board the M/S "Mongabarra". He signed on in San Francisco on December 1, 1949. Note this trip overlapped with the Album (00278) which documents the next trip Quinn made to Africa out of Gothenburg. The album preserves a 1950s perspective of a Merchant Seaman and his experience of the respective Ports at that time. The Collection is especially useful when viewed along with contemporary Quinn family correspondence.Album with metal Metal binder rings at spine and beige fabric cover with gouache printed colour design featuring scandinavian buildings. The album contains 25 pages of b/w mounted photographs. Some are missing. The cover is illustrated with colour screenprinted pictures of a white tower on the left and a brown Barn-like building on the right. There are stylised canoe boats containing rowers in the foreground.. On the inside front cover is a handwritten itinerary of the places visited. On front cover possible designer printed signature in black: "Grane"; On inside front cover on adhered sheet of paper in aqua ink lists intinerary/ index of 20 Ports visited: Title (see above) / "Signed on in San Francisco December 1st 1949 / " then a header line for 4 columns: " PORT COUNTRY ARRIVED DEPARTED / 1. Photograph taken through open driver's window shows young uniformed man with M&MTB cap number 2878 and summer tunic sitting at the controls of FNPTT car no. 10. The leather strap over his right shoulder looks similar to that used on conductor's bags. This along with his youthful appearance suggests he may be the tram conductor posing for the photograph. The destination reads "Regent St", which in the following years was renamed "West Preston". The tram would be a single truck, possibly R class.
