Catalogue for the auction of items of the Albert Park Emergency Hospital at the Drill Hall, 178 Bridport Street, Albert Park, under instruction of a combined committee of the South Melbourne, Port Melbourne and St Kilda Councils. The full date is not given. During the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1919, 34 emergency hospitals were created in Victoria because the existing hospitals were unable to cope with the demand for care. An Epidemic Hospital was set up in the Drill Room at Albert Park, the expenses shared between the South Melbourne, Port Melbourne and St. Kilda Councils, to serve influenza patients from those local government areas. Each Council had three representatives on the Board of Management. Like the other emergency hospitals, the Albert Park hospital operated only for a short time while the epidemic was at its height. As noted in the catalogue, 'the majority of the blankets, etc. were never used.' It is possible that items advertised in this catalogue were auctioned on Thursday 19 August and Friday 20 August 1920. Amy Isobel Huxtable was born in 1919 and moved to Bendigo in her teens. She completed her education at Bendigo High School before attending the Bendigo Business College. She then worked as a copywriter for local radio station 3BO for 8 years. She then moved to Melbourne to work in advertising before travelling to England in 1950 to study the new medium of television, still not available in Australia. In 1953 she returned to Bendigo and became the Eats Social Editor of the Bendigo Advertiser. This role led to a permanent position as the Women's Social Editor and later the editor for all Women's Affairs. Initially she wrote under the pen-name "Toora" but later used her own name. She remained in this position until her death in 1980. Throughout her life she was heavily involved in the development of women's roles and their status in life. Thomas Pinniger (1828-1927) was born in England and emigrated to New Zealand before coming to Australia in 1852. With a team of 4 he conducted the first geodetic* survey of Victoria. He became the Government Surveyor for Bendigo in 1853 and in 1854 he laid out the plans for the town of Broadford. His son George, became the Victorian Surveyor General 1925-6. * Large scale mapping based on global measurements of large land masses.
