In 2018 GHS members visited Turner's Bakery in Mernda for lunch and continued on to visit historic sites remaining in the Mernda area. This photograph shows remnants of the Mernda Market, established in 1919 as a livestock market. It was sited on Plenty Road in the carpark of the Bridge Inn Hotel. It evolved into a weekend 'trash and treasure' market although livestock auctions still took place on Mondays. The 31-acre (13 ha) cemetery site was reserved in 1855 and trustees were first appointed in 1858. A site plan was drawn up by Frederick Acheson, a civil engineer in the Public Lands Office, with the layout segregated by religious denomination, a common occurrence at the time. The first burial took place in 1859. The rules were gazetted rather than published as guidelines as the cemetery was constituted under and act of parliament. Early publication about the Boroondara General Cemetery which, in addition to providing public guidelines, reflects the social and spiritual values of the period.Rules and regulations of the Boroondara General Cemetery. Booklet, Mentone Life Saving Club: fourth club annual 1958-59, 1959
The Mentone Life Saving Club was formed in 1920 when the newly created City of Mordialloc (now the Kingston City Council) donated two bathing boxes to the newly formed Mentone Swimming and Life Saving Club on the site to the south of the former Mentone Pier. The Life Saving Club raised funds to build a new Clubhouse on the site and this was officially opened in December 1928 with the first Carnival Day of January 1929.The booklet contains black and white photographs of members and officials of the club. Each page is sponsored by a local business and provides a business record of the district as well as a social insight of activities of the citizens of Mentone and district.Booklet describing the club's activities during 1958-1959. On 17th January 1856, two acres of land was granted for the building of a school and church on that site in Macedon Street. A small temporary building was erected on the site and on 13th December 1864 the foundation stone was laid for the new stone church which was known as 'Our Lady of Mount Carmel'. The damaged building in the photograph is the former Diggers Rest Hotel which was built in on that site in 1854 It was a popular place during the 1970s Sunbury Pop Festivals as it was the closest hotel to the Pop Festival site. It was partly destroyed by a suspicious fire on 30th October 2008, which left the walls and chimney intact but the roof caved in. Since then there have been moves by the local community to either rebuild and reopen the venue or to demolish it.The Diggers Rest has been one of the few early surviving hotels that were built along the former Mount Alexander Road, now Calder Highway, during the 1850s gold rush years.This a non-digital coloured photograph of a double storey hotel building, which has been damaged by fire. The sketch of Woodlands Homestead is a reproduction of Ian Symonds original drawing. He was a Sunbury resident and was an active member in the local art group and gallery. He drew many black and white drawings of interesting homesteads and sites in thew district. William Pomeroy Greene, from Scotland settled on land near Gellibrand Hill and Moonee Ponds Creek at Bulla and built his prefabricated homestead own the site.The Greene family were one of the early European settlers to settle in Bulla. These items were recovered during a visit to the site by Australian Army World War 2 ex-serviceman John William Toon, service number VX30397. J W Toon (also known as Bill Toon) served with the 8th Division and was a prisoner of war. -

The Ballarat Ironworkers' and Polytechnic Association was at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1907 J.W. Gregory Professor of Geology at Glasgow Univesity, Late Director of the geological Survey of Victoria and Professor of Geology at Melbourne University. W. Dickson was Secretary for Mines and Donald McLeod was the Minister of Mines. in 1894 Ernest Lidgey was the Assistant Geological Surveyor for the Victorian Department of Mines. A.W. Howitt was Secretary for Mines and Henry Foster was the Minister of Mines. Charcoal hard covered report on the Ballarat East Goldfield. The book combines two reports from the Victorian Department of Mines. The 1894 report is 52 pages and includes images and plans. The 1907 Report is number 4 in the Memoirs of the Geological Survey of Victoria.
