In 1985 Australians had cause to remember two events in their history. On Sunday 3 March troops paraded through Sydney commemoraing the century of the departure of the New South Wales Coningent, Australia's first overseas force, to the Sudan War. Elias Samuel BABIDGE No 1312 (born Heathcote, enlisted Heathcote) in the 2nd reinforcements 6 th Batt AIF on 18.11.1914. Embarked for Egypt 2.2.1915 then Gallipoli 5.4.1915. WIA 14.5.1915 GSW to the shoulder. Hospitalised 3.12.1915 with enteritis. Embarked for Australia 9.2.1916 enteric. He embarked for England on 3.7.1916 with the 18th reinforcements 6th Batt. Regt No. changes to 2194. Transferred to the 59th Batt 8.10.1916. WIA 21.12.1916 with GSW to the buttocks but changed legs slight. Hospitalised 21.7.1917 with old GSW (ulcer). Most of the photos were pasted on something originally so that now most of the writing is unreadable. Two large photos have stamped in red & blue on rear "Gepruft Stalag XVIII A".
