Album - City Traffic Congestion, Various dates September 1954
Six photographs showing traffic congestion that detains progress of trams in city streets. Road traffic congestion that detained tramcars in the city centre and on selected suburban roads had been a major concern to tramway operators dating back to the early 1900s. During the 1960s, and perhaps earlier, the Tramways Board regularly proposed ways of keeping motor traffic off the trams tracks, but little progress was achieved.Yields information about the perennial issue of motor traffic detaining trams. Medal - Cycling Medals W. S. Toyne
These cycling medals were awarded to W. S. Toyne. Two of these medals are time medallions relating to the Warrnambool to Melbourne Cycle Race. This race was first held in 1895 and continues to the present day. It was originally a handicap race from Warrnambool to Melbourne but after 1938 it became a Melbourne to Warrnambool race. After 1995 it became a scratch race and today the distance is shorter with the race starting from Avalon. It is the second oldest one-day cycling race in the world and the longest one-day cycling race in Australia. All riders who complete the race in a given time are awarded a Time Medallion. The race was sponsored by the Dunlop company from 1901 to 1927. In 1923, 123 of the 196 riders, who started at 5:30am completed the 165 mile road race and were awarded the time medallion. W. S. Toyne was listed among the some of the first cyclists to go through Camperdown at 8:16am. It was reported that over 50,000 spectators witnessed the progress of the race. These cycling medals belonged to a cyclist, W. S. Toyne, who completed in a significant sporting event in Warrnambool in 1923 and 1924. Australian Gliding Museum
Machine - Glider – Sailplane, 1956
This exhibit is a home built glider of a Grunau Baby 2 design modified by the addition of a fully enclosing Perspex canopy, spoilers, and a landing wheel. It was built by Alex Mackie and was originally owned by the Southern Cross Gliding Club at Camden, New South Wales. The first flight was on 19 May 1956. After about 10 years service with that club it passed through a series of owners, including the Forbes Soaring Club, Beaudesert Gliding Club and private operators. The last major inspection and overhaul of the glider was April 1972. It passed a further airworthy inspection in April 1975. At that time, questions were raised about the weight of the glider (found to be 400 lbs empty). In 1976 it had fallen into a non-airworthy condition and has not flown since. By that time the glider had flown 1161 hrs 11 minutes from 5228 launches. This exhibit is an example of a Grunau Baby 2 type incorporating some improvements as typical of post war built Grunau Baby gliders. Wooden – fabric covered glider – missing canopy perspex, Instrument panel has turn and bank only. Currently the glider features a predominately silver grey colour scheme. australian gliding, grunau, southern cross gliding club, forbes soaring club, beaudesert gliding club -

Photograph - Black and White Photographs, Photographs relating to runner and Olympian Tony Benson
As of 2016 Tony Benson is the last Australian to win the 5000m at one of the major meets (now called Diamond League). That year Tony Benson was undefeated in Europe something no Australian has done since. He was also undefeated in the USA in early 1972 and probably would have medalled in Munich 1972 except for an incurring a hamstring injury 10 days before the race AND not being able to find the team medical doctors until some 16 hrs after the injury due to them being away from the village. Despite running with a torn hamstring Tony Benson broke Ron Clarke's Australian Olympic record for the 5000m but had no 'kick' and finished 7th in the heat. None of those who made the final had ever beaten Benson. Kip Keino and Tony Benson became friends. Keino received the first ever Olympic Laureate Award by the IOC at the Rio opening ceremony in 2016. Five images from the Collection of Tony Benson. .1) Tony Benson runs during the Ballarat Teachers' College Lap of the Lake, 1962 .2) Ballarat Teachers' College Athletics, 1963 .3) Ballarat Teachers' College Athletics, 1963.
