Fortuna Villa was initially commenced as a modest single storey home in 1861 next to the 180 Mine by Theodore Ballerstedt, who sold the mine and house to George Lansell in 1869. Lansell already owned the adjacent Fortuna Mine, and through deeper mining techniques greatly expanded the mine's operation, his personal wealth, and the house and grounds. Lansell was soon known as the 'Quartz King', Australia's first gold mining millionaire and credited as the driving force behind much of Bendigo's prosperity. He continuously added to and expanded the villa, decorating it extravagantly with the finest of artworks and materials, into a sprawling mansion with extensive landscaped grounds, to create a house and grounds of a size and grandeur with few rivals in Australia. After his death in 1907, his second wife Edith carried on with improvements, creating a house and grounds developed over 50 years. The attached mine also contributes to its significance, being one of the richest mines in Bendigo, and at one stage probably the deepest gold mine in the world at 3176 feet. The 1875 crushing works are attached directly to the mansion, and the mine's tailings and settling ponds (turned into ornamental lakes) represent a direct link between George Lansell's wealth and its source. Fortuna was compulsorily acquired by the Commonwealth in 1942 as the Cartographic Headquarters of the Australian Survey Corps during World War II, and many ancillary structures were added while preserving the main house and ornamental grounds. This is a collection of eight photographs of Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1957 to 1964. After the disbandment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) in 1947 there was only one or two of civilian women in administrative positions at Fortuna. In February 1957 female positions from the disbanded Southern Command Field Survey Section in Melbourne were transferred to newly established positions at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. They were accommodated at the newly acquired ‘Turriff’ mansion in Carpenter Street, Bendigo. Their first Officer Commanding (OC) was CAPT Beryl Perry from 1957 to September 1960. Her replacement as OC was CAPT Carol Castor who served in several positions up to June 1967. The main areas of employment in these early days were in administrative positions, draughting in and retouching in Lithographic Squadron. WO2 MA McLaren was the first female to reach the rank of WO2 as a Cartographic Squadron section commander in June 1961. WO1 Marj Knight served at Fortuna from 1959 to 1978 was the first female to reach the rank of WO1. WO1 Knight served in the senior Squadron Sergeant-Major and Technical Warrant Officer positions of Cartographic Squadron. She was also the first female PMC of the Army Survey Regiment SGT’s Mess. The WRAAC uniform seen in this collection was replaced in 1979. As the Australian Army implemented the disbandment of the WRAAC as a separate corps in 1980, WRAAC personnel posted to Royal Australian Survey Corps units were integrated into RA Svy. The WRAAC personnel in Photo .8P are not identified, although the SSGT seems to have an Army Headquarters Survey Regiment unit colour patch on her shoulder. This set of 43 photographs was taken in August 1990 during the Australian Army Chief of the General Staff (CGS) and Regimental Sergeant-Major of the Australian Army (RSM-A) visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Lieutenant General Henry John Coates AC MBE was a senior officer in the Australian Army who served as Chief of the General Staff from 1990 to 1992. RSM-A WO1 Kevin ‘Lofty’ Wendt OAM BEM was the 2nd RSM to be appointed to the position of RSM-A, the most senior Warrant Officer position in the Australian Army. His appointment was from 1987 to 1990. The name of the CGS’s aide de camp officer is unknown. These 41 photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio, at Bendigo on the 14th of November 1984. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, pistol shooting, sailing, squash, rifle shooting, softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The “O.H.A.R.A Rock” seen on the table in photo 6585.10P was awarded to the shooter with the lowest score in rifle shooting. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1977 was the second time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, the Mayor of Bendigo and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1992 and 1996.This photograph of the Army Survey Regiment was taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry to the City of Bendigo March in 1977. This is a set of 12 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s winning entrant in the Miss Golden North Charity Queen quest - 2LT Kathie Ryan, taken on three occasions in 1985. The following article was compiled by the unit summarising her campaign. ‘On Friday 20 September 1985, 2LT Kathie Ryan of the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo, faced a selection panel of a different kind. Kathie is an entrant in this years Miss Australia Quest and is sponsored by her unit. Together with seven other girls from Central Victora, Kathie vied for the Regional Title of Miss Golden North, held on 20 September 1985. With enthusiastic shouts of joy from the members of the Regiment present, Kathie Ryan was crowned Miss Golden North 1986. She is now one of 19 finalists contesting the title “Miss Victoria 1986”. “It has been a very rewarding experience being involved in raising money for such a worthwhile cause” said Kathie. “Organisations such as the Spastic Society, have a very important role in helping people with disabilities. To be involved with this society has been both enjoyable and a great learning experience”. The aim of the Miss Australia Quest is to raise funds for the Spastic Society of Australia. Kathie entered the Quest in March then, together with her committee, started to raise money. Over the next seven months, many fund-raising activities were conducted. These included an Open Day at the Army Survey Regiment, a Bingo night, several raffles, and several tin shakes in the streets of Bendigo as well a participating in several of the functions organised at a Regional or State level in the name of the Spastic Society. The total raised this year was in excess of $11,500. The Army Survey Regiment has now had 3 entrants in the Miss Australia Quest since 1981 and has raised over $23,000 for the Spastic Society in that time’ An abbreviated article with photo 6593.4P was published on page 12 of the Army Newspaper on 28 November 1985. Two articles with photographs were published in the Bendigo Advertiser Newspaper on 23 September and 30 October 1985. Clippings from these newspapers, a detailed breakdown of the funds raised during the campaign and the Army Survey Regiment’s Open Day Administrative Instruction are stored with these photographs. The Open Day was held on the weekend of 24-25 August 1985. This is a set of six photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel who volunteered as extras in the ANZACS TV Series filmed in 1985. Many of the extras playing the roles of Australian soldiers were serving members of the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo and the Armoured Regiment, Puckapunyal. This was done to keep costs down so that actors did not have to learn how to act as soldiers or to have to teach them how to use the weapons. Army Svy Regt’s 28 personnel left Bendigo in the early hours of the morning arriving at Phillip Island’s Cowes Motor Inn. Wardrobe staff make-up artists dressed the soldiers from both units in authentic WW1 uniforms in readiness for filming at Woolamai Surf Beach, on the other side of Phillip Island. Filming for the day involved a battle scene simulation of the beach landings at Gallipoli, Turkey. A long day of filming ensued, with 8 arduous re-takes of charges from the beach to the steep cliffs, and the scrubland beyond the cliffs before the producers were satisfied with the footage. The producers provided ample refreshments back at Cowes Motor Inn at the end of the day, before Army Svy Regt’s 28 personnel departed on the 4-hr trip back to Bendigo. This document is a draft proposal by the School of Military Survey (SMS) for the Manual of Land Warfare Volume 1, Phamphlet No1 - Employment of RASvy - Part 2, Survey Training 1984. The pamphlet describes the responsibilities and principles of employment of RASvy units and elements in the area of operations and in the support area. It outlines the roles, characteristics and tasks of RASvy units and elements, but no attempt has been made to detail staff or technical procedures. The document being a draft, contains many blank pages for additional information to be added prior to publication. Multiplex mechanical stereoplotting equipment was used at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo. c1950s. Multiplex equipment was imported from the UK in 1951 and introduced in the following year, to accelerate map production output covering CMF training areas at 1:25,000 map scale. Multiplex plotting was a productive advancement replacing the ‘Arundel’ method of graphical plotting planimetric detail that was expensive and slow, especially in timbered mountainous terrain. Air photos were made into small diapositives and mounted on racks in the exact position relative to when the aerial photos were taken. The technicians operated the Multiplex in a darkened room, with one photo projected with a green filter and the other through a red filter to form a 3D view of the overlapping photos. The 3D model projected onto a platen, which was a small platform that was raised up and down. The technician viewed the 3D image with special glasses fitted with red and green lenses. In the centre of the platen was a small pinhole that served as a floating mark, with a vertical pencil located exactly below the pinhole. This tracing table was moved to follow the topographic feature or contour line and draw it on the paper underneath. The technician raising or lowering the platform’s floating mark to match the height of the 3D terrain. It also replaced the slotted template method of mechanical adjustment of strips of aerial photography, however was restricted to each strip rather than between strips in the block. Although the Multiplex was phased out of production in 1968, it was used in the training of photogrammetry and aero-triangulation at the School of Military Survey located at Bonegilla, Victoria until the early 1990s. The history of the Multiplex is covered in more detail with additional historic photographs, in pages 50 to 51 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. This instrument is only one of the projectors of a set and is unfortunately missing its platen, coloured filters and coloured glasses. A cardboard set of glasses is included as an example. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995.These black and white photographs of the Army Survey Regiment were taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry parade to the City of Bendigo in 1980. This collection of 16 photos was most likely taken in 1978. Mr Denis James “Jim” Killen was the Minister for Defence in the Fraser Government from 1975 to 1982. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas in Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. Jim Killen served in the RAAF in WW2 and later had an illustrious career in politics. After receiving his knighthood and an AC for service to Australia, he was known as Sir Denis James "Jim" Killen, AC, KCMG. These 27 photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo 24th of May 1991. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The winner of the Flag Day competition in 1991 is not known.
