This ceremonial dish appears to serve the same or similar purpose to the medal, it is unknown whether the dish was awarded, or whether it was purchased and customised to reflect the respect of service that the medal from the same year served. This dish is peculiar, which in turn increases the significance of the object. Though similar to the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal in social purpose, it is less historically significant. However, due to the nature of the collection at large, this object is of medium to high significance. Additionally, it may be a crucial object in reflecting thoughts, feelings and social organisation of Australian nurses. Federation University Historical CollectionLetter - Correspondence, Margaret Malone, Letter regarding gold assay from Mount Egerton Mine, 10/02/2014
... Letter regarding gold assay from Mount Egerton Mine...Letter regarding gold assay from Mount Egerton Mine Letter Correspondence Margaret Malone ...Margaret Malone was associated with a kaolin mine at Mount Egerton. WOMAN WHO MANAGES A MINE Works With A Vision (By a Special Corespondent) BALLARAT, August 22.—Like a Heroine in a Bret Harte story of the Soaring: Forties Miss Margaret Malone, the only woman mine manager in Australia, has lived most of her life in an atmosphere where hope springs eternal in the gold-seeking breast. Forty years ago her father gave up farming to seek the elusive mineral near Ballarat. "One day my mother went for a walk along the Gordon-Egerton road and picked up a pebble with a few specks of gold in it," she told an interviewer yesterday, recounting the early history of the nine she now runs at Egerton. "Dad said, There must be more where that came from,' and hopefully sank a shaft. Our hopes were dashed, however, when he found only white clay. No one realised then the value of the disappointing looking white stuff which was all that Dad could find from every shaft he sank. At last be gave up the search, and the kaolin remained untouched." Later an Englishman from a pottery town in the old country urged Mr. Malone to try and sell his clay, and he sent some to the Bendigo potteries, but nothing came of it, and it was left to Miss Malone, after her father's death, to start on her unusual career by finding purchasers in Sydney and Melbourne for her clay, and herself working the mine. Strenuous Work "Mine managing is strenuous work in more ways than one," she admitted. "I have, to go down my mine daily, ad sometimes have to descend perpendicular ladders for about 150 ft. to reach areas being worked. I have to be my own manager, she explained, "because it is necessary to teach the men I employ the methods of grading clays." A New Cure She is convinced that a number of uses for kaolin, apart from pottery, soap and drugs, are yet to be discovered. "One of my employees has already found a new use for it," she said, "although scarcely one to be generally recommended, perhaps. By chewing a small piece of the clay he firmly believes that he "cured himself of heart burn." "All That Glistens" There is more in Miss Malone's mining than meets the eye, however. The actual working of the field and the substantial profit she makes on it do not fill her days. Always before her - dangles the compelling vision that caused her father, in his day, to give up farming to seek for gold. "All the time I am getting my clay dug," she confessed, "1 am watching for the colour of gold. One of these days I may strike it." This information comes from David Gordon of the Tarnagulla.com web-site. “The Nicholls family were very well known and highly respected at Tarnagulla in the 1800s. Albert's father, William Nicholls, was a leading figure in the gold mining community, and he both managed and owned quartz processing facilities for decades. He was probably the leading mining expert at Tarnagulla in a town full of mining experts, and it was said that no man at Tarnagulla had handled more gold over the years that him. (think in terms of tons of gold!) I would imagine the assaying equipment was probably passed in due course by William to Albert Charles. There are records of Albert Charles mining at Tarnagulla with his father as a young man, but AC apparently came down to the city when the gold began to fade. There are records of him living in Kew up until his death in 1932. Oertling collaborated with Makins and built his first balance, which was "a twin-column assay type with a light lattice beam". ...The Oertling beam balance scale was used in the Bendigo School of Mines assay laboratory. The manufacturer, Ludwig Oertling (1818-1893), was born near Hamburg and gained his apprenticeship in instrument-making with his brother Johann. He immigrated to London in 1840, where he joined instrument-maker and assayer George Makins (1815-1893). Oertling collaborated with Makins and built his first balance, which was "a twin-column assay type with a light lattice beam". By 1851, the year of the Great International Exhibition of the Works of All Nations, Oertling had established his own instrument-making business, employed five instrument-makers and by 1861, ten staff were engaged in designing and making instruments, principally analytical balances. Oertling's first twin-column beam balance was the prototype for all Oertling assay balances that were produced during the next century and exported to the British colonies: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and India, to Europe and America." Reference: Powerhouse Collection - https://collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/550913 Brass beam balance made by Oertling, London in 1898. The scale is mounted on a wooden base board with a mahogany case, glass on four sides with two drawers underneath. On bottom of the left hand drawer, written in pencil, is the works number '21736'. A cursive 'L' on the same drawer bottom indicates 'left'. Also on bottom corner 'J.W. 28.2.98'. 'J.W' was John Wright, foreman and cabinet maker. He was Oertling’s longest working cabinet maker from1886-1928. In pencil underneath the right corner of the left drawer is '3/98'. Written in pencil inside the drawer cavity is 'E.C' in fancy script. This refers to 'Charlie Craig, employed as an instrument maker by the Oertling Company. The maker's name, "Oertling' is embossed on the base of the scale. There is a brass knob that fits in the front to make adjustments to the scales and also on either side of the exterior case to set the top of the scales. 21736, J.W. 28.2.98, E.C., 3/98mining, equipment, scales, ludwig oertling, beam balance, assay, bendigo school of mines and industry -

The process helps identify pollutants present within a sample and can indicate a high level of pollution in a mining site. Stoneware crucibles are used in the fire assay process due to their ability to withstand high temperatures. Fire assay is a three step process where by samples from the mine are ground in a find powder and then mixed with dry powder chemicals. This mixture is heated in a crucible to extreme temperatures (crucible fusion) until all of the powers fuse into a glass like slag. Once this reaction is complete, the contents are poured into a mold and cooled. In step three (known as cupellation) the mixture is separated in a fire assay cupel and once this is complete the cupel with reveal a small bead of precious metals. Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running potteries in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. It has partnered with the City on various tourism promotions and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection. Two stoneware vessels of differing dimensions (0287.1 & .2).
