The Djaara people's importance to country was impacted by the dramatically imapcted by the development of gold mining in Bendigo. So many drunken firefighters arrived at the blazes 150 years ago that teetotalers started up their own fire brigade. Now known for their high standards on fire grounds, Bendigo's first brigades were sometimes found wanting.
