In the years of Allan Doney’s photography, landmark buildings succumbed to fire, neglect and redevelopment. He photographed the grey sand hills from Bendigo’s mining past, the streetscapes, poppet heads, miners’ cottages, gracious homes with ornate verandahs, trams and much more. Above all, his photographs show how much of the city has survived from the 19th century – and how much has not. Through two decades of great change, Allan Doney was there to capture ways people interacted with it. Although he travelled to many other places in Northern Victoria and beyond in search of subjects for his art, he seemed to always return to Bendigo for inspiration.

Seven men were killed at the Great Extended Hustler's mine disaster on 2nd May 1914 by an explosion of dynamite occurring as the men were waiting at the plat to ascend the mine at the end of their shift. No blame was attached to anyone in the findings of the inquisition. It was unknown what caused the dynamite to explode. This document formed part of the research done at the time by Bendigo Historical Society, of the 100 years commemoration of the mine disaster, held at Hustler's Hill in 2014. The inscription on the plaque for Bob Brothers reads: 'this sundial and garden court is erected as a memorial and tribute to Bob Brothers, a native of this City of Bendigo. His charity, kindness and comradeship, particularly at Bourke on the Darling River, N.S.W., inspired Henry Lawson to characterise him in the story 'Send around the Hat.' Dr. Roderick is attempting to substantiate Brothers' connection with Bendigo and is 'anxious to contact anyone with authentic records of a Bendigo man, Bob Brothers who was immortalised in a Henry Lawson poem, 'Passing Around the Hat.'
