Extract from text: 'There are reefs passing through this ground at small intervals in every part of this claim, they all dip north. The mass of leaders struck in No. 4 (shaft) yielded, on an average about 1 1/2 ounces to the ton to the amount, in all, of about 12,000 pounds. Macartney, in his book had this to say:- ''The Masonic Hall is by far the grandest building in Sandhurst (Bendigo), and a fitting and right noble home for such an Order to place their ark in. The building is one on the pure Corinthian order, lofty without, and spacious within; therein is the finest Assembly Hall out of Melbourne Town Hall. What an imposing façade, with its tapering columns rearing the graceful acanthus-leaf capitals 40 feet. . . . With the growth of Freemasonry in Bendigo, new Craft Lodges were established, as were lodges of higher degrees. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British Order of Chivalry across six divisions including civilian and military. The Order was created by King George V in 1917 to honour services to the British Empire both in Britain and other countries within the empire, including Australia. Annie Mavis Webster was awarded the MBE in 1978 for her services to music both in Bendigo and the wider community. Miss Webster had won a number of amateur music competitions, but it was her talents as a teacher of music and singing she is best remembered. She taught at St Mary's, Girton and St Killian's during her career. Annie Mavis Webster died in 2000 at the age of 86 years. The City of Bendigo honoured her by establishing the Mavis Webster Vocal Collection at the Bendigo Library.Various objects associated with Mavis Webster, MBE. a Black jewellery box embossed with gold edging around outside of lid.
