This is a set of 33 photographs taken at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR) Officers Mess Ball held at the Fortuna Villa on the 17th of February 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests were taken on their arrival in the gardens at the front of the main building. The 3rd Military District Band provided the music. The Dinner was held at the rear of Fortuna Villa in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. The dance was held in the Ballroom on the top floor of Fortuna Villa with a civilian show band providing the music. Contracted staff provided the catering, the ASR’s Catering Corps and RASvy Other Ranks performed stewarding and kitchen hand duties. This set of formal photos were taken in Fortuna Villa’s cupola stairwell. Not seen in these photos is a set of small leadlight windows located above the main windows with four words – EAST WEST HOME BEST taken from an old phrase ‘East or West, Home is Best’. This is a set of 15 photographs taken on a CO’s Parade held in December 1990 at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. The Reviewing officer was the Commander of the 3rd Military District BRIG P. Davies AM ADC and the Parade Host was D-SVY COL Don Swiney MBE. The formalities performed at the parade were the presentation of a Warrant, presentation of the Defence Force Service Medal to two recipients, handover of the Regimental Sergeant-Major (RSM) appointment and promotions of four WO1’s to the rank of Captain. This is a set of 41 photographs taken at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR) Officers Mess Ball held at the Fortuna Villa on the 17th of February 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests were taken on their arrival in the gardens at the front of the main building. The 3rd Military District Band provided the music. Formal photos were taken in Fortuna Villa’s cupola stairwell. The dance was held in the Ballroom on the top floor of Fortuna Villa with a civilian show band providing the music. The Dinner featuring in this set of photos was taken in Fortuna Villa’s Ballroom, Tavern and temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. Contracted staff provided the catering, the ASR’s Australian Army Catering Corps (AACC) and RASvy Other Ranks performed stewarding and kitchen hand duties. The Freedom of Entry to the City on the 26th of October 1990 was an honour first conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. This was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The event began with a ceremonial parade at the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The RAAF Central Command Band provided the music at the parade. After formal inspections of the troops, the Army Survey Regiment saluted as it marched past the Reviewing Officer - Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass, military dignitaries and guests. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Rene van den Tol, the unit marched down View St, along Pall Mall and to Gaol Rd. Regiment members were treated to a civic reception at the City Hall after the ceremony. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992 and 1996. This set of 32 photographs were taken at the Corps Day Parade held at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 28th of June 1990. The Parade Commander was CO LTCOL Rene van den Tol, and the Reviewing Officer was the Director of the Survey Corps - COL Don Swiney MBE. The Corps Day Parade was held on a wet and miserable day to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. This occasion was one of several events held in 1990 to commemorate the 75th anniversary. These photographs were taken at the Corps Day parade at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo in July 1983. This was the Director of the Survey Corps – COL John Hillier’s last parade at Fortuna before his retirement. COL Hillier, often referred to as ‘NRJ’ (his initials) was Director for five years. COL Alex W. Laing attended the parade as his successor, seen in the foreground of photos .5P and .6P. COL Hillier was appointed a couple of years later to the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1989 to 1993. COL Laing was Director of RASvy from July 1983 to November 1988. The Freedom of Entry to the City was an honour conferred by the Bendigo City Council to the Army Survey Regiment in 1970. 1980 was the third time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob Skitch, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor Paul Tomkinson and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1992 and 1996.
