Letters of John Albert Cashmore & Arthur Cashmore, John & Arthur Cashmore, 1915 to 1918
Both Cashmore brothers embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Palermo on 7th May 1915, and returned to Australia in mid-1919. Nine letters by Jack and two by Arthur were sent from Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine. A letter by Jack from Palestine on 26th October 1917 tells of an upcoming action that "may be pretty big", and a later letter (March 1918) tells of men known to him who were lost at Beersheba.Eleven WW1 letters by Jack and Arch Cashmore (4th Light Horse Regiment, 5th Reinforcement). Video of Rex Mathieson and Ron Cashmore's story about the Schomberg and their experiences diving on the wreck. the video was shown at the Peterborough Hall in January 2017, with live commentary by the divers, and accompanied by artefacts lent to the History Group by Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum.The Schomberg wrecked close to the town of Peterborough and this video is narrated by Rex Mathieson and Ron Cashmore who dived on the wreck over a period of years prior to the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976. They collected artefacts and took underwater photographs at that time. Following World War One, the present Memorial Gates at the front of the Lara Recreation Reserve (opposite the service station), were erected and the names of 104 men and woman who enlisted from Lara Districts were added. Twenty four paid the supreme sacrifice. They were erected at a cost of £380 by Barklamb Brothers of Caulfield. His Excellency The Governor Lord Somers officially opened the gates on 22 December 1929. RSM Cadwell was in charge of the program. The ceremony involved a large gathering where Lord.
