The design of modern mayoral chains (also known as a livery collar) mimics the ancient gold collar of Esses worn by the Lord Mayor of London which was bequeathed to his successors by Sir John Aleyn (who died in 1545) and which has a large jewelled pendant added in 1607. Source: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livery_collarDesigned and manufactured by Mr. E. Prescott from 9ct Yellow Gold in 1893 and believed to be made from Bendigo gold, the Bendigo mayoral chain was conceived by Mr J.H. Abbott and created with financial assistance of Mr George Lansell the "Gold King" of Bendigo who contributed the central medallion. The 18 links which made up the original chain represented serving mayors to date and were gifted by ex mayors or their representatives. The main chain consists of 35 links of quatrefoil form with the name of each mayor and the years of their term engraved and filled with black enamel. Overtime, as the chain grew too long to wear, it was separated into two joining chains eventually consisting of another 34 link section, totaling 69 links spanning years 1862 - 1988. The monogram of each mayor in gold is placed in the centre of each link and the links are connected by filigree 9ct gold joining curbs, unique to this period. The engraved central 'drop' or medallion is an eight pointed form with the body being an irregular oval containing four projections and four recesses forming the eight points. The shield section depicts the Australian emblem in miniature above and larger central Bendigo Coat of Arms filled with coloured enamel. The reverse of the medallion bears Lansell's name and is inscribed with the following: / Bendigo gold field discovered in 1851/ proclaimed municipality of Sandhurst /1855 / and city 1871/ Named changed to City of Bendigo 1891, in honor of which event / Cr J. Marong Shire City Council of Bendigo Council of Bendigo Bendigo Tramway Company Booklet concerning Modified Agreement between City of Bendigo, Borough of Eaglehawk, Shire of Marong and Bendigo Tramway Company. Lime green paper cover without any text. Five pages. Agreement made September, 1891 ...The Sandhurst and Electric Tramway Company was the first to blaze a trail when it introduced battery trams to Bendigo in June 1890. Unfortunately they had made a serious miscalculation, as the batteries quickly proved inadequate for the hilly terrain of Bendigo. After a couple of months battery trams ceased running and were later replaced by steam trams in February 1892. Steam trams were a reliable means of transport and successfully moved Bendigonians around for ten years, but the onset of the recession forced the Bendigo Tramways Company to sell up in 1899 to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria (ESCo) who continued to run steam trams until 1902. This turn-of-the-century sale led to the introduction of electric trams to Bendigo in April 1903. These were a success from the very beginning. During peak hour people would be standing in the aisles, in the doorways, even on the running boards on the outside of the tram. In addition, the trams were also the first option for deliveries. Parcels, newspapers, movie reels for the picture theatres and even mail bags found their way onto the trams; sent from outlying post offices to the GPO in the city centre. At the end of World War I the Victorian Government constituted the new semi-government instrumentality, the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SEC). The SEC was to take over all privately owned power generating companies in Victoria and operate as a state owned monopoly ... Bendigo's tramway system was an integral part of the deal. The outbreak of World War II was a testing time. Revenue and passenger numbers were declining as automobiles became more popular. Additionally, shortages in manpower and materials due to wartime economies caused difficulties. As a result, the SEC made several attempts at closing the tramways and handing over the passenger services to private bus operators. It took some time, but in July 1970 the Victorian Parliament finally granted the SEC's application for abandonment of the tramways. April 1972 marked the closure of the Bendigo Tramways as a commuter service and an estimated 20,000 people gathered to say an emotional farewell.Booklet concerning Modified Agreement between City of Bendigo, Borough of Eaglehawk, Shire of Marong and Bendigo Tramway Company. He has written on the history of Victorian gold mining, Victorian agriculture and working in Melbourne. This document provides a demographic analysis of Bendigo, a Victorian provincial city, during the late nineteenth century. Historical demographers have studied broad Australian population trends, but local studies like this one have been limited by inadequate records. Recent access to detailed manuscript birth, death, and marriage records allows for a more granular local demographic analysis. The study combines these records with published statistics and traditional sources (e.g., diaries). The paper examines the origins and occupations of Bendigo's late nineteenth-century immigrants. It analyzes population fluctuations and migration patterns, especially out-migration during economic downturns. Marriage patterns, birth and death rates, illegitimacy rates, bridal pregnancies, and de facto relationships are also explored.Population Bendigo experienced significant population growth from 28,577 in 1871 to 35,584 in 1881, driven by a mining boom and economic prosperity. The late 1880s saw a decline in mining yields, leading to economic depression, unemployment, and a population decrease to 34,089 by 1891 as residents left the city. The city's development and demographic changes are closely tied to the fortunes of its mining industry, reflecting broader patterns of boom and bust in Australian provincial towns during this era. These points collectively illustrate how economic cycles and migration shaped Bendigo's demographic landscape in the late nineteenth century.Fortuna - Bendigo 1881-1901 - A Demographic Portrait of A Victorian Provincial Town - extract from a book by Charles Fahey This item contains the following: 11217.55a Pages 88 to 107 of his book - Contact BHS for detailsnon-fictionbendigo, fortuna, george lansell, charles fahey -

(remainder of print too small to read. Sandhurst. Bendigo July 4th 1883 The match played between Sandhurst and Bendigo provides a rare insight into the Australian game at a crucial stage of its development.. . Trophy presented by local jeweler, Mr Joseph Moody. .. Football was relatively weaker in Bendigo than in the comparable city of Ballarat. This can be explained by the high migrant proportion of the Bendigo population, its economic difficulties in the 1880s and by its distance from Melbourne. .. Football overtook cricket by the end of the decade as the most popular sport. .. A regular Saturday competition was played, with matches also played on Wednesdays. These matches were a legacy of the earliest ''scratch'' matches, suggesting a relatively strong union movement which had won concessions for weekend work. Matches started at 3pm. ..The best player on the ground was a contractor and the captain an accountant. .. Transition. The predominance of the ''little mark'' the participation of sometimes frightened junior teams against adults and the division of the game into halves rather than quarters represents an era that has disappeared. Complaints of rough play, poor losers, the problems posed by children. .. An issue, was seen as a blight on the game in 1883. The greatest offender, alleged by ''Drop-Kick'' in The Bendigo Advertiser, was Sheldon of Sandhurst, an ancestor of current day player Ken Sheldon of St Kilda. .. Fundamental issue about the place of sport in society. .. The reason for this is that the Bendigo club was in dispute with the Bendgio Union Cricket Club over control of the Back Creek Ground. If they had been refused the ground, as it was feared, then the whole association would have been forced to disband. Only last minute negotiations resolved the dispute. .. Reflects the values of society, .. Broader conflicts about power and the control of resources within that society. 2000 turned out. The crowd cheered lustily and the players exhibited similar excitement and were urged on by their captains to play up and kick the ball. In the eventual Sanhurst victory, amongst the best players was Edward Cordner, a forerunner of the renowned Cordner family of the Melbourne Football Clubs. Shane Cahill. Sources: Fahey, James C. Many examples of their work can be found in the local cemeteries. William Beebe senior (1830-1891) was born in Rutland, the smallest English county in 1830, to stonemason Chamberlain Beebe and Susannah Clements. William emigrated to Victoria in 1854 and after engaging on unknown works in Port Fairy, Dunkeld, and Melbourne arrived in Bendigo. His obituary records that he commenced work here on the site of the Bank of Australasia (opposite the Shamrock Hotel), which would have been no later than 1856. He took up a 13 acre selection on the site of Rocky Vale Villa in 1864 and continued to select or purchase further parcels of adjoining land until he owned some 150 acres, much of it unfit for cultivation. He was a keen gardener and had a garden and orchard around the house. William took over 20 years to build the two-story sandstone and granite house "Rocky Vale Villa". The house was constructed from sandstone sourced "from an adjacent ridge of rocks" (Bendigo Advertiser 28/9/1891). Granite from Harcourt was used for lintels and quoins. Not long before he died, William was still adding to the house. In the Codicil to his will, he states that "I have just built and completed two additional rooms to my Dwelling house situe at Inglewood Road aforesaid" (dated 19/9/1891). Jacob Cohn was a partner in the well-known Cohn Brothers brewery and served as the city's mayor during the 1888–1889 term. The Cohn Brothers' Victoria Brewery, founded in 1857, was a cornerstone of Bendigo's industry for over a century. Established by Danish immigrant brothers Moritz, Julius, and Jacob Cohn, it is most famous for brewing Australia’s first successful lager in 1882. In 1925, the family sold their brewing and hotel interests to Carlton & United Breweries (CUB). However, they continued to manufacture soft drinks and cordials until the 1970s, when the business was eventually acquired by the Coca-Cola Amatil Group. The illuminated address was usually a highly decorative, hand-lettered document often given to public officials in the 19th century to mark significant service or retirement. This specific address includes photographs of Cohn and the nine city councillors who served alongside him.Jacob Cohn. Esq. Mayor of Sandhurst 1889-89. Dear Sir.
