The Confidence Extended Gold Mine was located near the corner of Taylor Street and Upper California Road, Long Gully. CONFIDENCE EXTENDED This company, as will be soon by the plan, has a large lease holding on the extension of the line. The main shaft, which is in a fairly central position, is down about 2350 ft., while the lowest level at the N. shaft is at 1403ft. After making- allowances for the northerly pitch of the country, it is calculated that the main shaft would require to be deepened about 600ft. in order to pick lip the continuation of the reef being opened up successfully in the "Windmill Hill mine. J. K. Hall was a prominent local mining figure, investor, and speaker, rather than managing daily underground shaft operations, Outside of Bendigo, J. K. Hall was heavily involved in interstate quartz-reef exploration. The Confidence Extended Gold Mine was a major historical deep-shaft gold operation located on the Garden Gully Line of Reef in Bendigo, Victoria. Operating predominantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it played a vital role in confirming Bendigo’s global status as one of the world's richest quartz-reef gold mining fields. Document.Copy of Williamstown Historical Society Newsletter No 17 (1977).On the second and third page of this Newsletter is an article entitled ''The guns of the 'Nelson''', written by Doug Mills, Castlemaine. The Warship NELSON underwent alterations in 1860, including cut down to two decks and lengthened, her armaments reduced to 72 guns. Two 7inch 68 pounder guns were added to her armament. In February 7 1867 she was officially given to the Colony of Victoria by the Imperial Government. At the time her Commander was Captain Charles B. Payne. The Warship reached Melbourne in 4th February 1868. Relics of the NELSON were auctioned at Williamstown Victoria Naval Depot, and her two anchors are preserved for public display at Williamstown. An active demand for a share of the guns from various towns in the State. Ballarat received four (4) guns, Bendigo and Castlemaine two (2) each, while one has been given to each of the following towns: - Ararat, Tarnagulla, Hamilton, Bacchus Marsh, Echuca and Geelong. Handwritten quote from W. Abraham, Inspl of Mines, Bendigo. He had been at the Great Northern Company's mine when the engine driver was hauling water from the 1.780 feet level, with a tank on one side and a cage on the other, broke the cross-head and two motion-bars; the drums reversed and desecended about 50 feet. The driver applied the air-brakes. The drums were brought a standstill, without any further damage. The Insp. Was in favour of the air -brakes and thought every should be compelled to use them in shafts below 1,000 feet in depth. Also a list of companies who have had these brakes fitted to their winding plants and a list of the companies who intend to fit them. Handwritten letter to Mr. Blake with reference to meeting students and the changes in Bendigo. Mentioned are the Log Lock-Up, the Central Deborah Mine, the ex-manager of the mine, Mr. Rowe acting as a guide, Victoria Hill and the Bendigo Pottery. The notes titled ''To replace Around the Goldfields'' mentions the Third Edition, 'Historic Guide to Bendigo', published in 1969 of land reclamation schemes rapidly removing all traces of several mines. Those affected on the New Chum Line of Reef are: The Victoria Consols, Ironbark and Hercules and Energetic. The Sheepshead Line - the Ironbark and Ironbark South. On the Garden Gully Line - The Cornish United, Koch's Pioneer and Confidence Extended. The Paddy's gully Line - The British American, Lansell's Sandhurst (Needle) and the Collman and Tacchi. On the Derby Line - Johnson's No 3 (Nelson) and on the Hustlers Line are the United Hustlers and Redan and the K. K. Mines.
