The Decanter set was originally given to Dr John Paull by Dr Geoffrey Kaye and were later donated to the College by Paull . The decanter label, coaster and tray were crafted by Geoffrey Kaye and includes his initials inscribed into each piece. "LEY" Pewter refers to the pewter containing a large percentage of lead which in this case there is 80% tin and 20% lead.Glass decanter of cylindrical form with glass stopper and a pewter label which hangs over the decanter. The Hotel Warrnambool had its origins at the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets, Warrnambool,which opened in 1890 as the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace, a temperance hotel. In 1891 it was granted a colonial wine licence and in 1895 it became known as the Ozone Hotel (a private hotel with superior accommodation). From 1894 to 1907 Thomas Randall was the proprietor. In 1923 the hotel, by then known as Hotel Mansions, it became a fully licensed hotel. The building was burnt down in 1929. It was rebuilt as a lower building and continues to this day to operate as a successful hotel with extensive bar and dining areas. In recent times it has had two long term publicans Mr Laurie Taberner and Mr Stephen Phillpot. This crystal decanter would have been a common item in the hotel bar area. It is unknown how old it is. The Ozone later known as the Hotel Mansions then Hotel Warrnambool has been and remains one of the most significant building in our city. The item has strong provenance being donated by a previous owner of the hotel and has very clear etching of Hotel Warrnambool on one side. It has strong social significance also as many local people have socialised at the hotel over many years.Square glass or crystal container with wide beveled corners. The crystal glass decanter is in a plain, square-shaped style and has a large glass stopper. The four matching glasses have round bases and are about a third of the height of the decanter itself. This object was presented by Dr Dennis Moriarty (Dean of the Irish Faculty of the RCSI) to Professor A B Baker (Dean of the Faculty RACS) at the 6th International Conference of Reciprocating Examination Boards of Anaesthesia (CIREBA) in Wellington, New Zealand 1990. The crystal decanter, made by the manufacturer Waterford, is well known as the first glass making factory in Ireland. This "art deco" style of containers were very popular by the "art and trendy" socialites, be they in the city or in rural towns and properties. This style was very popular in the 1940's to 1950's. The octagonal shape provided the stability of the decanter with its "expensive" contents. Because of its style it blended in well with any lavish meal and socio economic "upper" class environment. It was a part of social atmosphere of elegance and wealth be it in the city or on a rural property. This is very significant to the Kiewa Valley rural "society" environment. At the time of its use the wealth of Australia was "riding on the sheep's back", that is rural income(primary producers), on the whole, was well above that in the cities (industrial). It was in a period where large wealthy property owners could spend lavishly on trendy domestic items.This octagonal glass decanter with its egg shaped stopper is made in an "art deco" style and reflects the 1950's style of bold design. The decanter "stopper" has been cut in a "diamond" cut to reflect the sunlight as does a diamond ring. The stopper is tapered down to permit easy placement and removal.
