This booklet was produced by the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen in 1975. On that date the Victorian Division of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen was 114 years old, making it the oldest continuous railway union in the world. It was formed as the Locomotive Engine Drivers' Association in 1861- just 7 years after the first railway, Flinders Street, Melbourne to Sandridge (now Port Melbourne) was officially opened. Memorandum from the Office of D.R.S. Sup't Bendigo 1st July, 1938. FPM/S. Issues of Tools Comprising Enginemen's Kits on Engines. The sup't of loco Supplies has drawn attention to the enormous increase in the number of tools issued for Enginemen's kits, and below is set out the issues for 6 months under the old system and the issues for the 6 months under the new system. The percentage increase in hand hammers, hand lamps and feeders is particularly large. The above state of affairs is giving much concern and unless an improvement results it is probable that the whole system may be abandoned and the old method reverted to. Drivers were highly skilled enginemen. Taking a train from Beech Forest to down to Gellibrand required the train to be controlled at 10 mph (16 km) without running out of air. When a brake application was made the brakes on the locomotive were applied harder than the train brakes. The brakes locked up and the engine would just slide along. Drivers used a retention valve on the loco, then released the loco brakes so as not to wear out the brake shoes. So the train pulled into Gellibrand ready to pull out again after refilling the loco with water.At Gellibrand, a Down goods train is about to depart the station on 14 December 1955. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. A planned parallel run south of Seymour with NSW locomotives 3112 and 1210 and Victorian Railways J515 had to be abandoned due to late running by the NSW locomotives. A parallel run did take place on Sunday 16 October when VR R761 and NSW 3801 ran from Wodonga to Melbourne. On 25 October 1988, the Flying Scotsman worked its first passenger trip in Australia when it took a return Melbourne to Albury journey.
