The development of stereoscopic photography views or stereographs was immensely popular in the United States and Europe from about the mid-1850s through the early years of the 20th century. First described in 1832 by English physicist Sir Charles Wheatstone, stereoscopy was improved by Sir David Brewster in 1849. The production of the stereograph entailed making two images of the same subject, usually with a camera with two lenses placed 6 cm apart to simulate the position of the human eyes, and then mounting the positive prints side by side laterally on a stiff backing. Brewster devised a stereoscope through which the finished stereograph could be viewed; the stereoscope had two eyepieces through which the laterally mounted images, placed in a holder in front of the lenses, were viewed. The two images were brought together by the effort of the human brain to create an illusion of three-dimensionality. Stereographs were made of a wide range of subjects, the most popular being views of landscapes and monuments and composing narrative scenes of a humorous or slightly suggestive nature. Stereoscopes were manufactured for various price ranges and tastes, from the simple hand-held device introduced by Oliver Wendell Holmes who promoted stereography through articles to elaborate floor models containing large numbers of images that could be flipped into place. The stereograph became especially popular after Queen Victoria expressed interest in it when it was exhibited at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exposition. Like television today, stereography during the second half of the 19th century was both an educational and a recreational device with a considerable impact on public knowledge and taste. The Fine-art Photographers' Publishing Co. published many stereoscopic pictures from many different photographers from around the world under license. They also not only sold these images of various scenes and of famous people of the time but also were retail sellers of the viewers with the subject item having been made in the USA probably by H C White who held the patent for the subject items design from 1895 to 1902.An item that was very popular from the mid 19th century through to the beginning of the Edwardian period. Used for entertainment and also educational purposes and significant as it gives us a snapshot into the Victorian era and its social and domestic societal norms. This photo is thought to have been taken at the time of Alfred Mica Smith's retirement from the Ballarat School of Mines. It is most probably also the unveiling of the Max Meldrum portrait of Smith. Alfred Mica Smith retired from the Ballarat School of Mines in 1922 after an association of 41 years and aged 78 years. At the August meeting of the Ballarat School of Mines Council in 1881 it was resolved that 'Alfred Mica Smith Esq., B.Sc., be appointed Professor in Chemistry and Metallurgy and be Superintendent of the Laboratories, for the period of twelve months at a stipend of five hundred pounds per annum, and to commence duty as soon as possible'. (signed: James Oddie, Vice-President) Smith played a major role in the years of 1887-1893 when SMB was affiliated with Melbourne University. In 1912 he became Professor of Metallurgy and received an annual salary of 250 pounds. Alfred Mica Smith presented many scholarly papers, gave evidence at government enquiries into the safety of mines and became an authority on mine safety and ventilation. He was on the Mines Ventilation Board. Professor Smith was the public analyst for the City of Ballarat and Town of Ballarat East, as well as to a number of other boroughs and shires. He was also Chief juror to the Adelaide International Exhibition, chemical section. He provided information to the Royal Commission on gold mining (1889, 1891), and was President to the chemistry section of Australian Association for the Advancement of Science, Associate of American and Australasian Institute of Mining Engineering, Member of the Science Faculty Melbourne University, and Hon. Life Member of the Miner Managers' Association of Australia. He also was involved in many educational and community affairs such as President of the SMB Students' Association, President of the Ballarat Science Society, first President of the Ballarat Camera Club, Vice President of the Field Naturalists' Club, and he presented Ballaarat Fine Art Gallery with his collection of paintings and porcelain ware. His legacies include the mutual regard between him and his students, the many tributes by former students, the Mica Smith scholarship (established in 1923) and now known as the Corbould-Mica Smith Travelling Scholarship, his portrait in oils by noted artist Max Meldrum, and the marble bust of Smith sculptured by Paul Montford. Money for a scholarship in sanitary science at the University of Manchester in the name of his uncle R. A. Smith was left being set up in 1928. Smith died of cancer on 14 May 1926 and his remains, cremated at Springvale, were interred in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. Famous French artist Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, 1796-1875, was trained in the classical landscape style. His inspiration came from his travels around France and Italy. He developed a soft poetic or romantic style of work which became very popular. He had the skills to bring'light' into his paintings. The original oil on canvas painting by Corot is held at The National Gallery in the United Kingdom. It is titled 'Souvenir of a Journey to Coubron' and is one of twenty-seven of his works at the Gallery. Corot visited Coubon, east of Paris, many times. In 1873 during his stay there he sketched the scene that became the basis of this painting. This reproduction print was made by The Medici Society Ltd., founded in England 1908. The Society's aim was to make artwork affordable and available to the general public. The name Medici was chosen to honour the support and encouragement given to artists in the 15th century by Lorenzo de' Medici (1449 - 1492), known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, and his family. His profile is on the company's trademark. The Medici Society still produces Fine Art reproduction prints as well as selling original works. The print was framed by Westminster Art Gallery in Camperdown, London. The handwritten text on the back of the artwork adds some background to the artist: Corot was apprenticed to a Draper but changed to his profession at the age of 22 years. When he went from a poor artist to achieving wealth and fame he generously supported his less fortunate fellow artists. Corot found that the light and shade in a natural scene meant more to a landscape painter that what could be learned by following the principles of the academies. Corot was 51 years old before he sold his first picture. He though that he was the only artist that could really paint 'light'. The National Gallery, Victoria, has an original oil on canvas by Corot "the bent tree", created 1856-1860. It is in a similar style to this print "Souvenir of a Journey to Coubron", which was likely to have been painted around the same time.This high quality reproduction print was produced in the early-to-mid 1900;'s. This advancement in technology allowed everyday people to own and enjoy the fine art that was previously only accessible to the wealthy.
