The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Girton College began as a private school in 1884 and was named after the first female residential college at Cambridge. Just prior to WW1, ownership and control was handed to the Anglican Church. In 1992 the church announced it would be closing the college for financial reasons. A group of volunteers stepped in to establish Girton Grammar School.Softcover book. Canning with Ms. Francy Morse on the verandah of 'Craigmore' Guest House in Myrtle St., ( Now Don St., ) Bendigo. 'Craigmore' was a guest house for men during the war years, it is now Frew Hall, a part of the new Girton College. At the time of the photo it was part of the old Girton College. The tree in the background is understood to have been planted by a visiting member of the Royal family in the late 1920's. It was one of a pair on either side of the steps up onto the verandah. The two trees were cut down several years ago go make way for developments on the site. Francy and her mother ran the boarding house for a number of years with mostly around 10 boarders.
