The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Memories compiled by Peter Rosewall; who attended the last NDSN school PTS 108 between 1986 - 89.Copy of a newspaper article in unknown newspaper published on Saturday 17 April 1976 titled "Ten Pretty Girls Make History of School of Nursing. Pilot Group graduates". Included is a photograph of the ten students who graduated from the NDSN. The names listed are Helen McLean, Marigold Vercoe, Karen Watts, Sheryn Dunn, Jennifer Campbell, Sherilyn Pedretti, Elizabeth Coles, Joan Buchanan, Karen Lowndes, Lynley Gibbons. There is also a description of the graduation event including dignitaries who attended including Mayor R.L Campbell and Kevin Houlahan who was the chairman of the committee of management of NDSN. The guest speaker was Mr Kevin McMahon who was Deputy Chief Nursing Officer of the Victorian Council of Nursing. Special awards were made to the nurses who averaged 85% in their exams. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. A document titled "Desirable Characteristics of the 21st Century Engineering Graduate" was from the University of Ballarat Division of Engineering and Science, Bachelor of Engineering Course. Page 1 states that Engineering educators should aspire to produce Graduates with a defined set of characteristics - 10 listed. Page 2 relates to the Engineering Course stating it should emphasise a number of key areas - 8 listed. Examples were obtained from Wollongong and Monash. Matron Vivian Bullwinkel flew from Perth to Fairfield Hospital to witness the last graduates of the Basic Nursing and Aide/Enrolled Nurse Training program before training is turned over to colleges. Vivian set up the training program when she was the director of nursing at Fairfield, between 1961 and 1977. With this final class, the total graduates of the program reached 1195. Vivian acknowledged that while medicine and treatment as evolved with the times there is one thing that hasn't changed: people's needs. The nature of nursing means getting close to people and this was never more apparent than when in a Japanese POW camp Vivian and other fellow nurses were approached by another POW of a different nationality requesting help as they trusted them, not the people in authority. Dennis Else's professorial status, Steve Cowley becoming Director of VIOSH, and Derek Woolley taking up the position of Assistant Director of the College. Dulcie Brooke is awarded an honorarium for her many years of involvement with VIOSH. S.H.A.R.E. program enters a new phase.
