These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, document the deteriorated condition of the former Sunshine Fire Station located on the corner of Hampshire Road and Berkshire Road, Sunshine. The images were captured after fire brigade operations had been relocated to the new station on McIntyre Road, Sunshine North, but before the historic building was restored and adapted for use by Tobin Brothers. They record a period when the former fire station stood vacant and showed clear signs of neglect and deterioration. Also visible is the residential section of the complex, including the adjoining house in Berkshire Road, which has since been demolished. The Sunshine Metropolitan Fire Station, built in 1927 at the corner of Hampshire Road and Hertford Street, served as Sunshine’s main fire station for decades. Designed by noted architect Cedric Ballantyne, it is one of the suburb’s most ornate public buildings and a key symbol of Sunshine’s rapid expansion during the inter‑war period. It closed around 1990 and was later restored and repurposed as the Tobin Brothers “Legacy of Life” Chapel.”The Sunshine Fire Station on Hampshire Road is one of Sunshine’s most historically significant civic buildings, a landmark of the suburb’s inter‑war growth, its industrial identity, and its long relationship with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The photographs provide a valuable record of the former fire station during a transitional phase in its history, documenting the condition of the site prior to its restoration and adaptive reuse. They also preserve evidence of features of the complex, including the now-demolished residence, that no longer form part of the site.6792.01 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPG 6792.02 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPG 6792.03 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPG 6792.04 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPG 6792.05 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPG 6792.06 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPG 6792.07 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPG 6792.08 - Sunshine Fire Station Hampshire Road 1991 Photographs (Advocate 132.2).JPGsunshine fire station, hampshire road, berkshire road, sunshine
