Plaque placed at a cairn erected in 1975 at the Hurst family cemetery at Hurstbridge in memory of people who were buried locally in unmarked graves. Transcription of plaque: This cairn was ereced in 1975 in memory of the following people who have been buried here in unmarked graves since 1866. Published: "The Melbourne Post" page 369, 22 November 1866. Reproduced Page 76 "Pioneers and Painters" One wet and miserable October night in 1866 a well-spoken young Irish braggart, who was wearing a poncho or riding cloak, knocked on the door of the home of Mrs. James Russell (nee Haughton) in Russell Road, Warrandyte. Realising that he was weary and hungry, Mrs. Russell gave the young visitor food and a bed in a hut up the back yard. The next morning she found he had gone as Harry Houghton had obligingly rowed him across the river in a mining punt. The man was Robert Burke (aka Bourke but real name Clusky), a known bushranger, who was being hunted by the police. Burke went to Kangaroo Ground where he stayed at Wellers Hotel before moving onto Hurstbridge. At Hurstbridge some hours later, he was eating breakfast given him by Miss Ellen Hurst, whose suspicions were aroused when she noticed a pistol in his pocket. Hastily she informed her brother, who loaded a shot gun and confronted Burke, an argument broke out and Burke produced a pistol. Hurst fired his shotgun, but missed. The two scuffled and during the scuffle, the pistol fired, wounding both Hurst and Burke. Burke was over-powered by some station hands and placed under arrest. Hurst, unfortunately, died later that day. Poor young boastful Burke - he was found guilty of murder and hanged, despite a strong recommendation for mercy and a large petition signed by Melbourne citizens claiming that he reacted in self defence. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. Eltham Community Festival awards. Awarded to the Shire of Eltham Historical Society for the most best Eltham theme Newsletter No. 33, November 1983 ELTHAM COMMUNITY FESTIVAL Despite the miserable weather, there was a good turnout. of members for the Festival parade. However the wet weather kept away many of our friends from the Victorian Folk Music Club who find it impossible to play in the rain. Thanks to those few who came along. We maintained out consistency by again collecting a Prize for our float- this time for the "Best Eltham Theme". Thanks to Dennis McKay for again providing his trailer for the float, and to Paul Sidwell for towing it with his Land Rover. As usual Joh Ebeli with some help from other members, was responsible for setting up the float. A successful display was held in the Eltham Community Centre on the theme of "Notable Local Residents" People featured in the display included pioneer settlers, Thomas Sweeney and Henry Hurst; founder of Brighton and later notable Eltham resident, Henry Dendy; former Shire Secretary and Engineer, Charles Wingrove; artists Walter Withers and Justus Jorgensen; parliamentarian Ewen Cameron; anthropologist, Dr. Donald Thomson; writer, Alan Marshall. Mia Mia was a cottage on the other side of the bridge on Diamond Creek at Hurstbridge. Fred and Catherine Hurst first lived here after their marriage in 1897. Frederick George Hurst of the Hurst Family, for whom Hurstbridge was named. Frederick was born in 1840 in England and migrated to Australia in 1854. He came to Hurstbridge in 1857 and lived for some years at "Allwood". He married Catherine Heffernan in 1872 and had three daughters. He died in June 1927, age 86, the oldest surviving member of the family, and was buried locally. William George Gray was born in Hazel Glen in 1869 and grew up at "Cleir Hills", Queenstown. He was the son of George Gray and Elizabeth Gray, nee Edwards (1843-1901). He married Frances Hurst in 1897. William and Frances would settle in Hurstbridge and operate Allwood Nurseries. He was also a Councilor for the Shire of Eltham. 1912-1919, serving one term as President. George and Frances children were Hurst, Sylvia, Clarice, George and Sheila. He died in November 1942, aged 73. Sisters, Francis Ellen Hurst (who married William George Gray), of Hurstbridge, Mary Ellen Hurst (who married C. E. Rankin) with their mother Catherine Hurst (nee Heffernan) of Hurstbridge and Ada Alice Hurst (1880-1910). Ada married Claude Pizzey of Diamond Creek. It is thought that this photo was produced after Ada's death and has incorporated a separate image of Ada behind the piano. Catherine E. Heffernan pictured age 16. She was born in 1856 in Maryborough and married Frederick Hurst in 1872 at age 16 when this photo was taken. They settled in Hurstbridge where they had three daughters. Catherine died in 1943 aged 87. Henry Hurst and his family settled at Allwood, Hurstbridge. It is his family that the town name comes from. In 1886 Henry had a scuffle with a bushranger known as Robert Burke in the Hurst home. During the scuffle a pistol was fired wounding both men. Burke was overpowered by some station hands and placed under arrest. Hurst later died. The area of Hurstbridge was originally known as Hurst’s-bridge after the timber bridge built over the Diamond Creek near Hurst’s station in late 1881/early 1882. Allwood, Hurstbridge, 1899. Gray family in the garden in front of the Victorian style Allwood house with lace iron work on the verandah. Left to Right: - , - , William George Gray (3rd from left),. Frederick and Catherine Hurst relocated this Victorian style weatherboard home from an inner Melbourne suburb to its present site on their Allwood property. Mr Charles Verso, builder and farmer, reassembled and refurbished the home for the Hurst’s. In 1897 Frederick and Catherine’s daughter, Frances Ellen, married William (Bill) George Gray of Cottlesbridge and the newlyweds moved into the new house. Frederick and Catherine Hurst moved into a little cottage, ‘Mia Mia’, on the other side of the Diamond Creek. William and Frances Gray established Allwood Nursery and by 1900 most of the Allwood property was under orchard, largely apples, pears, cherry plums and peaches. They also developed an extensive nursery, growing seedling stock for supply to other local orchardists and the overseas market. Portrait of Ada Alice Hurst who was the youngest daughter of Frederick Hurst of Hurstbridge. She married Claude Frederick Pizzey in 1907 and lived at Diamond Creek. Claude was the son of George Pizzey of "Claremont" Diamond Creek. She died on 25 July 1910, aged 30 at their home "Moana", Mitchell Street, Northcote. She is buried in the Diamond Creek cemetery.
