Robert JACKS (1943-2014) Jacks studied sculpture at Prahran Technical College from 1958–1960 and painting at RMIT in 1961–62. His first solo exhibition was held to great acclaim in 1966 and in 1968 his work was included in the landmark exhibition, The Field, at the National Gallery of Victoria. Beginning in 1968, Jacks spent ten years living and working in Canada and the United States. It was during this period that his unique visual language matured, incorporating influences from the major exponents of contemporary abstraction, minimalism and conceptual practice. In 2001 the Bendigo Art Gallery established the Robert Jacks Drawing Prize. In 2006, he was named an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. These Union Jack flags are believed to have been used in the celebrations in Warrnambool on the occasion in 1953 of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 (oral tradition only). Warrnambool celebrated with street parades, shop decorations and displays, concerts, church services and dinners. It was customary at the time to use the British flag more than the Australian one. These flags are retained because of their possible connection to mid 20th century Warrnambool celebrations (1953 Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11).These are seven Union Jack flags made of cloth with red, white and blue colouring. The flags are pasted on to thin circular-shaped wooden sticks. Robert Jacks is widely acknowledged as one of Australia’s most important and accomplished abstract artists. Jacks often worked across various mediums simultaneously producing sculpture, painting and works on paper which directly informed one another. Bookending his career, in 2014, the year he died, Jacks’ practice received renewed attention when the National Gallery of Victoria mounted the major retrospective exhibition Robert Jacks: Order and Variation, in which he played a pivotal role. This work is from the Metropolis series that drew on his experience living in Manhattan, as well as the view from his balcony in Lavender Bay, Sydney. From the balcony he could see the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with cars, buses and trains, as well as ships on the harbour and planes in the sky, all coming from different directions, reminding him of the futuristic images in Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film of the same name. This is a photograph of CAPT Jack Cullen (Ret) and an unidentified person besides the front steps of Fortuna Villa, Bendigo, c1978. Jack Cullen served for many years in the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1920 to 1952, after active service with the AIF in WW1. His service at Fortuna began in 1944 when he was a Lieutenant in charge of a map compilation section. John 'Jack' Horace Jackson worked for H.V. McKays Sunshine Harvester Works prior to starting up his own engineering business in Sunshine. He was also a keen photographer and movie maker.
