This large, leather bound journal was made for the Public Library and Burke Museum in Beechworth by book manufacturer, William Detmold in 1875. It was commissioned by the President of the Library and Burke Museum committee, Dr Antoine Mousse, for the purpose of cataloguing all the items in the collection. The cataloguer was the curator at that time, William Morton, whose hand-writing appears in the journal today. When William Morton first started recording in this journal in 1875, there were already a number of existing items in the institution. The Public Library and Burke Museum in Beechworth had actually been operating since the 1850s; first as a Young Men’s Association in 1856, then as Beechworth Athenaeum in 1858, then as the Beechworth Public Library in 1860. Then in 1861 when news of the death of Beechworth’s former police superintended, Robert O’Hara Burke, reached the town, it was agreed that the Public Library would also become a museum to tribute his legacy, renaming it as the ‘Public Library and Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum, Beechworth’. Many of the items from the early institutions would have been used to form the nucleus of this new organisation. Plus, the additional items that were either collected or donated to develop it into a museum. The catalogue is extensive. There are exactly 461 pages of recorded items, each page detailing the various collections the museum acquired in the late 19th century. Collections recorded in this catalogue include a large collection of geological specimens, that were given to the museum in 1868 by the Geological Survey Department of Victoria. A large collection of taxidermy mounts, that were given to the museum as skins by the Museum of Australia in 1865. An extensive collection of Aboriginal artefacts that were purchased from amateur anthropologist R. E . Johns in 1868. As well as artworks, charts, photographs, machinery, maps etc., all of which have been held in the museum since. This catalogue also details the governance and management of the organisation. There were originally 30 rules that governed the actions for the management committee and, while anyone could read in the free library, only subscribers could borrow two books and one periodical. At first, subscriptions rates were 7/6 a quarter. This was later changed to £1 per annum, paid quarterly in advance. This was a considerable amount; 7/6 per quarter meant that the annual fee was £1.10. This was equivalent to about £650.00 or about $1,182.00AUD today, while the reduced subscription fee of £1 a year was the equivalent to £450.00 or about $818.00AUD today. Membership of the athenaeum would have been the reserve of the town's notable citizens. The vale of the catalogue lies not only in its historical connect with the establishment of the Athenaeum and the current museum, but also in its record of the names and positions of all members of the institution's committees of management from 1875-1876. A Carte de Visite (hereafter CdV) (also known as a calling card) was popular within the mid-19th Century. It is a small card with a photographic portrait mounted on it. These cards were exchanged during the Victorian era (peaking in the 1860s) between families and friends. This particular CdV was captured by James Bray in c.1870. Bray who worked as a professional photographer in Camp Street Beechworth from 1870-1891. He was one of four men who photographed the Kelly Gang after the siege in Glenrowan in 1880. He is also renowned for his previous work photographing members of the Kelly gang. Depicted in this photograph is Isaiah “Wild” Wright. Wright was born in approximately 1846 in County Monaghan, Ireland. At age 11, Wright arrived with his father John Wright, mother Margaret and younger siblings in Victoria on the 9th of July 1857. They sailed on the ship ‘Carleton’ which left from Liverpool in England. Wright was stood 5 foot 11 inches tall and had brown hair with hazel eyes. He had a scar on the inside corner of his left eyebrow, a large scar on his right cheek and a scar on the back of his head. Over the years in Australia, Wright was sentenced on numerous (particularly of horse theft) charges and spent time in Pentridge, Hulk Sacramento and Hulk Sandridge. Wright married Bridget Lloyd in 1973. Through this marriage he was connected to the Kelly family as Bridget’s mother was one of Ellen Kelly’s (Ellen was the mother of Edward “Ned” Kelly) sisters. Wright is famous for his participation in the horse stealing incident of 1871 and subsequent bare knuckle fight against Ned Kelly that occurred in 1874. In 1878, Bridget and Isaiah Wright became parents to John "Jack" Thomas Wright. Jack Wright was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the Victorian Football League 1902-1906. Wright passed away on the 29th of May 1911.This photograph is part of the Burke Museum "Kelly album" which includes a significant collection of photographs and artefacts connected to Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Ned Kelly and his gang have become ingrained in Australian popular culture and thus many museums, art galleries and private collections house material connected to the Kelly story which allows the events and people to be researched and interpreted. Individuals like Isaiah “Wild” Wright played an essential part in the Kelly story which have been enlarged and adapted for popular culture. The study of these individuals thorugh their images and records can help researchers to correctly interpret their involvement with Ned Kelly and the Kelly gang. Artefacts and photographs pertaining to the Kelly gang are particularly valuable for Australian museums. This particular photograph is significant for its connection to Beechworth photographer James Bray who is responsible for many images depicting members of the Kelly Gang. John Bliss (1795-1857) was born in Norwich Connecticut, trained as a silversmith and clockmaker in Vermont, and began in business as a jeweller in New York around 1830. In 1834, now trading as Bliss & Creighton, he made and marketed a range of nautical instruments. The business subsequently became John Bliss & Son in 1855 and John Bliss & Co. in 1857. It remained in business until 1957 when it was acquired by West Marine. The Bliss company used to make a range of instruments supplied to a variety of customers including the US Navy. An object made as an aid for marine navigation, to plot a course on a nautical map for a vessel to follow. The item was made by a well known American maker of nautical instruments and is significant in regards to it's provenience and history of the maker and his family who over the years had been innovators and makers of various types of nautical instruments since 1795. No information is available on George Murray except that he was a Melbourne accountant and died intestate in 1885. He left property to the value of £91 and the lawyer, Ernest Chambers, who was at that time at 12 Chancery Lane, Melbourne, was directed to list the creditors of George Murray and distribute the estate accordingly. Mr Chambers was one of George Murray’s creditors. Ernest Chambers later had a legal practice with offices at Warrnambool, Koroit and Port Fairy with the known dates 1897 to 1910. Thomas Goodall was the manager of the Warrnambool office and he was the one who had this document in his possession at that time and it was passed down to succeeding lawyers in the Kepler Street building. This is a piece of parchment containing the 1885 Letters of Administration in the estate of George Murray, a Melbourne accountant. The document is white with black ruled lines and has handwritten material in black ink. The document is folded at the lower edge with a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria. The seal is attached to the document by a green ribbon. There is also a blue stamp of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court. Tait collection: item 31 of 62 This document contains details of the Will and Probate of Frederick John Jones, a farmer of Nirranda who died in October 1910. He left real estate to the value of £200 and personal estate to the value of £43. The beneficiaries were his daughter Harriet Jones, his son Frederick Augustus Jones and his grandson, Claude Eagle. No other information has been found on Frederick Jones, Senior. This document was in the possession of Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Koroit at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It was then passed down to successive lawyers occupying the legal premises in Kepler Street and located in 2014 in the same building, the former offices of Mackay Taylor. It was then passed on to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment folded in two containing handwritten material on the Probate of Frederick Jones of Nirranda, 1911. Two of the pages have ruled black lines. The seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with green ribbon and there are four red stamps of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court. Tait collection: item 33 of 62 This probate document gives details of the will of Thomas Smith, a farmer in the Wangoom district who was a pioneer settler, having arrived in the area about 1848. He erected the Shamrock Hotel in Dennington in 1868 and it was opened for business in 1869 with David Duffy as the first licensee. Thomas Smith was the licensee in 1870 and members of his family (Cornelius, Robert and Mary Smith) held the licence of the hotel until 1880. A codicil to the will gave Mary Smith, Thomas’ daughter, the hotel land and building. This hotel closed in 2011. Thomas Smith signed the original will with a cross (his mark). This book mark was issued by Cramond & Dickson's store Warrnambool to honour Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The Cramond & Dickson's store was established by John Cramond and James Dickson in 1855 and closed in 1974. The first store was in Timor Street and later moved to the corner of Liebig Street and Timor Street in 1865 . They opened a branch store in Poultry Lane in London in the 1880s. Queen Victoria ruled from 1837 to 1901. This docket book has been used to enter sales from the Cramond and Dickson department store in Warrnambool and to provide the customer with a copy of the invoice. It dates from about the 1960s. John Cramond and James Dickson, two pioneer settlers in Warrnambool, established the Carmond and Dickson store in Warrnambool in 1855, initially selling groceries, drapery and ironmongery but later, at the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, this department store sold mainly clothing and drapery. In the 1860s a Cramond and Dickson store was opened in London. The Cramond and Dickson store, a most important business in Warrnambool, operated until 1973. The docket book was printed by Lamson Paragon, a British firm that was established in Australia in 1897 and specialized in printing sales docket books with a carbon paper insert.This docket book is of interest as a memento of the Cramond and Dickson Store, one of the most significant businesses ever to have operated in WarrnamboolThis is a docket book containing 46 pages of white printed sheets bound with green tape and enclosed in a green patterned paper cover on the front and a piece of cardboard on the back. This ledger is a record of the sales of John Stewart from 1890 to 1905 in the districts of Warrnambool, Garvoc, Hamilton and Horsham. John Stewart was a printer and store keeper in Warrnambool from 1890 to 1895. He was also connected to several hotels in the district- the Pieter Both Hotel in Warrnambool in Raglan Parade, ( his wife was the Licensee in 1897), the Yallock Inn in Garvoc ( his wife was the licensee 1899), and hotels in Hamilton and Horsham.The Ledger is of some interest as it contains the names of many local people at the end of the 19th Century. It is a handy research tool. This ledger has 542 pages. It has a hard cover with a dark green cloth cover with leather binding on the spine and corners of the cover. Thes two documents deal with the purchase and sale of land near Warrnambool by Thomas Simpson. The first document, called a Grant by Purchase, is dated 1852 and shows that Thomas Simpson purchased from the Crown, Allotment 146 (22 acres two roods) adjoining the property of Wollaston on the Merri River and the Mortlake Road, north of Warrnambool. The cost was 90 pounds. The second document is dated 1853 and shows that Thomas Simpson sold this Merri River allotment of 22 acres to Eliza Bromfield, in conjunction with her husband, John Davenport Bromfield, for the sum of 110 pounds. The property of Wollaston was owned by the Manifold family and in the 1850s was leased to William Simpson, the brother of Thomas who had an adjoining property called Wooramoota. John Davenport Bromfield was a Colac farmer who played a prominent part in the early history of that town. His brother James Astley Bromfield, an early chemist in Warrnambool is important in Warrnambool's history.These two items are of considerable significance because they are amongst the earliest legal documents we have connected to Warrnambool's history and because they concern three early pioneers of the district. They also have a connection to Wollaston, an important early property in the Warrnambool district..1 A piece of light parchment paper, stained with age and folded in three places. This ledger contains a chemist's handwritten prescriptions from 1905 to 1910, giving the date, the name of the client and the prescription contents and measurements. The chemist is unnamed but the clients have Warrnambool names and a loose envelope in the ledger addressed to 'Mr H.F. Sambell' suggests that the chemist business may be that of Sambell and Son in Fairy Street Warrnambool. John Sambell established this business in Fairy Street about 1890. He died in 1906 but his son Herbert had joined the business and it was known as Sambell and Son for many years and later as Sambell, Son ad Granddaughter.This prescription book is of interest as a record of a chemist's prescriptions in the early 20th century and it has considerable research value.This is a ledger of 496 pages . It has a cream-coloured hard board cover with remnants of leather binding on the spine. It has ruled pages, an alphabetical index at the front and handwritten entries in ink. First published in 1806 by John Murray and written by Maria Rundell, later editions were "By a Lady". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_New_System_of_Domestic_Cookery A legal dispute arose between Murray and Rundell over the copyright of the cookery book titled "A New System of Domestic Cookery" by Mary Eliza Rundell. The book, which was published in 1806, gained immense popularity over the years. In 1821, Murray claimed that Rundell had infringed on his copyright by publishing a new edition of the book without his permission. The case was brought to court, and after much debate, it was ruled that Rundell had indeed infringed on Murray's copyright. The court ordered her to pay damages and to stop publishing the book without Murray's consent. This ruling was significant as it established the legal precedent that copyright law applied to books and other written works. - Based on an article from The Edinburgh Annual Register, 1821 Robert William Whatmough (1815 Heywood, Lancashire-1887 Diamond Creek, Victoria) and his wife Mary Hill ( 1813 Rochdale, Lancashire - 1881 Greensborough, Victoria) were pioneer settlers on the Plenty River at Greensborough.
