Joachim Streger was born in Wedel, Germany, in 1827 and came to Australia in 1855. After landing in Adelaide he travelled cross-country to Bendigo. He was robbed of everything when he was held up by bushrangers at Big Hill. Following this he was supported by his friends, the Kahlands, who had arrived in Bendigo two years before from the same German village. He set up puddling machines in King Street, Garsed St.,Myrtle St and Quarry Hill. He also became a carpenter and builder. These strips are repeated down the long organdie skirt. A deep panel of embroidered cotton organdie type fabric reaches from the hemline to the yoke. Handsewn, extremely fine seams. Front opening on skirt with three hooks and eyes. Gathers at centre back of skirt. Large decorative bow at centre back of skirt. Sleeves and bodice have black velvet ribbon and black lace trim at back and front. Black velvet ribbon trim around hemline. Black silk-satin machine stitched dress. Dropped waist with bans 3.5 cm wide across front. Pleat from neckline to dropped waist, 2.5 cm wide and fastened down by four groupings of two one cm diameter buttons, mauve in colour. Four rows of narrow pin tucks each side of centre front and one tuck one cm wide on outer side of pintucks. Six press stud fasteners concealed under left hand tuck. Fold down collar, with two silk embroidered flowers appliquéd at collar fronts. Three quarter length sleeves slit at lower edge, and trimmed with two mauve buttons and two silk flowers appliquéd at each lower edge. Photocopies of five newspaper cuttings from 11/5/1988 to 20/6/1990 mentioning the German Society by Bendigo Advertiser writer Maurie McDonald. Mentioned are German Society plans memorial to its pioneers, German contribution to Bendigo, German dinner an outstanding success, German settlers established vineyards in the district and German Society plans to remember its pioneers. One cutting has a photo of an ornate bookcase which was made for a Miss Pike. It was the work of a German tradesman, Mr C Nagle. Another has a sketch? Of the Brache & Co Weroona Vineyard, Sandhurst. It also mentions a number of early vineyards.
