The Kennington Red Cross was established by four local women - Mrs G. W. Lansell, Mrs W. Montgomerie, Mrs C. Barrett, and Mrs W. McCauley in August, 1914. The Australian Red Cross was established as a branch of the British Red Cross, and was exceptionally busy during World War One and World War Two. The Red Cross operates under seven fundamental principles of - Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary service, Unity and Universality. Framed certificate in light-colored wooden frame. No mount separating certificate and glass. Cardboard backing on frame not contemporary with certificate. Certificate has tear through middle. Colors of certificate include white boarder, dark blue inner boarder, with red, blue, pink, white, yellow, orange and purple making up most of other colors. Image of 'Angel of Peace' to right of certificate, and details of how the Kennington unit contributed to the First World war towards centre of certificate.
