... Author: H E Whitelaw Share Abstract Early in 1910, some considerable time after it had become generally known that a rich reef at a depth of 405 ft was being worked southward from the privately owned Lansell's Little 180 shaft and immediately following the plotting of the Geological Survey pitch diagram of the Sheepshead line of reefs, some wide awake local mining men seized the opportunity to secure the holding known as Eadie's which, overlapping Lansell's lease and containing a stretch of the Sheepshead reef channel between the Little 180 north and south shafts, had been declared void some five years previously. That the Lansell Estate did not acquire this property on its becoming available is puzzling in the light of the fact that in Eadie's day the late Mr G W Lansell, on discovering auriferous spurs in the south shaft (now the Central Blue) had offered 2,000 pounds for, and a percentage of gold won from the lease. ...Author: H E Whitelaw Share Abstract Early in 1910, some considerable time after it had become generally known that a rich reef at a depth of 405 ft was being worked southward from the privately owned Lansell's Little 180 shaft and immediately following the plotting of the Geological Survey pitch diagram of the Sheepshead line of reefs, some wide awake local mining men seized the opportunity to secure the holding known as Eadie's which, overlapping Lansell's lease and containing a stretch of the Sheepshead reef channel between the Little 180 north and south shafts, had been declared void some five years previously. The estate was renowned for its size (40 rooms) and beautiful gardens. The household employed a staff of seven, including two German maids who served the family for 50 years. Workdays were long, starting at 7:30 am and ending after 10 pm, with only brief afternoon breaks. Duties included serving afternoon tea to guests, often from Bendigo's leading families, and maintaining the entire house even though only two Lansell family members lived there. Despite the decline of the gold baron era, the Lansells maintained a lavish lifestyle, hosting elite guests such as Lords Stradbroke, Stonehaven, and Sommers. The family owned several of Bendigo's finest homes and frequently entertained high-profile visitors, including governors and relatives from England. Staff enjoyed simple pleasures like boating on the lake and relaxing in the gardens when the family was away.Mrs. Speechley recalls specific incidents, such as serving while Lord Stonehaven was in residence and working at other Lansell properties like Dendra and Lansellstowe.Mrs. Speechley's memories provide a unique glimpse into the domestic service and social life of one of Bendigo's most prominent families during the 1920s, preserving a romanticized view of a bygone era. The Lansell family maintained high standards at Fortuna mansion, especially during visits from governors, with special preparations such as new curtains, linens, and engraved silverware.Mrs. Lansell preferred to shop in Melbourne rather than Bendigo due to her high social status and discomfort with local attention. The document shares a lighthearted story about a governor misplacing his bathing suit and retrieving it himself. Mrs. Speechley, a former staff member, recalls her experiences working for the Lansell family, including her brief departure and return after Mrs. Lansell's advice. After the Army took over the mansion in the early 1940s, the elegant furnishings and gardens were lost, which Mrs. Speechley describes as a shame.Fortuna Restoration Article - "Gold and Governors" - Bendigo Advertiser Sat 23 Sept 1995- Author Mathew O'Sullivan This item contains the following: 11217.2a Black and White Photo of Myrtle Speechley displaying a picture of herself as a young maid at Fortuna 11217.3b Part of page 23 - Gold and Governors 11217.3c Part of page 23 - Gold and Governorsnon-fictionbendigo, fortuna, army tropographic support establishment, myrtle speechley -

Initially unsuccessful, Lansell later prospered by employing experienced Cornish consultants and miners. His return to Bendigo was driven more by public belief in his personal influence than by his mining expertise. He was involved in wage reduction efforts and allowed his mines to flood, causing widespread unemployment among miners and resentment. The story of a coffin being placed as a symbol of miners' animosity is discussed, with the author suggesting it reflected broader discontent, not just disputes over working conditions. Lansell's marriage to Bedelia Mary Mulganney was troubled, marked by her alcoholism and early death, with her will contested by Lansell despite its modest value. Bedelia's death was lonely, with her death registered by an undertaker's assistant rather than family. Edith Lansell (née Bassford)Edith, from a respectable but financially struggling family, became Lansell's housekeeper and later his wife. Their relationship began before marriage, with Edith giving birth to their son shortly after their wedding. Lansell was significantly older than Edith, and their union was met with mixed reactions from family and the public. The document reflects on the lasting impact of Lansell and the miners on Bendigo's history, suggesting that the tragedies and triumphs of these figures are embodied in the Fortuna estate. The author expresses gratitude for the preservation of Fortuna as a symbol of Bendigo's mining era, acknowledging both its glory and its tragedies.Fortuna Article - "The Lansell Saga" - The Weekender Saturday Oct 02 2009 This item contains the following: 11217.26a Colour Photo of Edith Lansell, the housekeeper who became mistress of the house, courtesy of the Bendigo Art Gallery. 11217.26b Part of page 22 - Article "The Lansell Saga"non-fictionbendigo, fortuna, george lansell, edith lansell, edith bassford, bedelia mary mulganney -

Acquired in 1908 by George Victor Lansell, son of Bendigo's famous "Quartz King" George Lansell, as a home for himself and his bride, Edith Florence Gwendoline (Gwen) Frew. The couple named the house "Denderah" after a village and temple in Egypt they visited on their honeymoon. After Sir George's death in January 1959, the property was auctioned and renamed "Coolock House." It Served as a convent for the Sisters of Mercy and as a venue for meetings. The original "Coolock House" name is also associated with a Sisters of Mercy house outside Dublin. Currently, Coolock House is used as classrooms for Catholic College students in Bendigo. The building retains elegant historical features such as hand-carved mahogany fireplaces, leadlight and stained glass windows, wrought ironwork, and a sweeping mahogany staircase. A notable anecdote is that Lady Lansell would watch guests arrive from a small bay window at the top of the staircase.
