'Box Cottage' is so named after the first recorded family to establish a house and market garden on the site in 1865. William and Elizabeth Box. After the death of Elizabeth Box in 1914 the house was leased to August Reitman a potter / sculptor who raised his family there 1917 - 1953. Stefanie Rennick nee Reitmann lived at the house until she left to study teaching. The Lewis Timber Company Ltd acquired the land with The Cottage c1970. The CMHS together with City of Moorabbin Council, a 150 Year Celebration Grant and assistance from Lewis Timber Merchants Pty Ltd reconstructed the original 'Box Cottage' on its present site May 1984. August Reitman 1877-1951 and his wife Frieda 1878- 1942 raised 2 children Stefanie 1918-2006 and William 1920-1997 whilst living at the Box Cottage site. .August was a monumental mason and sculptor and was employed to carve war memorials in Victoria after WW1. He moved his business to Highett in 1953 but continued to use the cottage as a workshop until he sold the property to Lewis Timber P/L c 1970. . William and his descendants have continued the family business to the present day. August Rietmann 1877-1951 and his wife Frieda 1878-1942 leased the Box Cottage in 1917 and raised 2 children Stefanie 1918-2006, and William 1920– 1997. August was a Monumental Mason / Potter / Sculptor and he was employed at Corbens Ltd Clifton Hill, to make the War Memorials for many towns post WW1. August purchased the property 1935,and established a pressed concrete business using the cottage as a workshop and storeroom After August died in 1951, William, his son, continued to work in the business from the site until the land was sold to Lewis Co. Ltd Timber Merchants in 1970. Rietman's Landscaping Ltd , managed by William's family, moved to Bay Road Highett 1953 and later to Carrum. The original small, pioneer cottage was built in the late 1840s to early1850s, by an unknown pioneer. It was located on part of a 30 Acre allotment that was originally part of Dendy’s Special Survey granted in 1841. The doors and window sashes, (made of red deal joinery timber), as well as the brass locks and fittings, are from the original cottage, and were imported from England. The fire-place bricks are from the original cottage, and are sun-dried, (not kiln fired), and are hand-made. Convict marks can be seen on two bricks. There is a small display of external cladding shingles from the original pioneer cottage. These shingles were hand-split, and most likely made from locally collected timber The nails included in this display were used to fasten the shingles on the original cottage, and are also hand-made. The cottage was occupied by William Box and family from 1865 until 1914 when it was sold to August Rietman . The enamel nameplate, “Colonial”, on the wall of the cottage, was the name chosen for the original pioneer cottage by Mr August Rietman, when he purchased the property in around 1915, for 1200 Pounds approximately. In 1974 Mr Lewis, a timber specialist, found the dilapidated building on property he had recently purchased in Jasper Rd and suggested it be reconstructed and relocated. Moorabbin Council agreed and the cottage was rebuilt just about 250 metres from its original site. The cost of the rebuild was met by 'Victoria's 150th Committee, plus a small grant from the City of Moorabbin, and Mr Laurie Lewis donated much of the timber for the reconstruction. The re-constructed cottage plan has followed faithfully the original dimensions, and plan of the original pioneer cottage, and as many original items from that cottage’s long occupation have been incorporated. 1916 William Henry Thomas of Keys Road , South Brighton (now Moorabbin ) in WW 1 1914 -1918 1st AIF uniform. William was born in 1894 , Christened at the Wesleyan Church. (Methodist), Wickham Road, South Brighton and attended Moorabbin State School. . Private Thomas was a market gardener in Moorabbin prior to his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force on 19 July 1915. Both his parents wrote separate letters giving their consent for their son to serve overseas due to " the pressing request of my son William Henry, also the urgent need of recruits do give my consent that he shall go to the front." September 29th 1915 he left Australia with the 5th Reinforcements of the 24th Battalion for Egypt. March 1916 he was hospitalised with Mumps and shortly after left Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force for France where he transferred to the 6th Australian Machine Gun Company.. Whilst on leave in England he received medical attention before returning to France and 13 November 1918 he spent a week in the care of the 7rh Field Ambulance suffering with influenza . Private Thomas returned to Australia on the hospital transport Castalia 13 April 1919 and his enlistment was terminated 26 September 1919Private William Henry Thomas and his family are examples of the patriotism exhibited by the market gardeners, and indeed throughout Australia, during the World War 1 1914-1918. Photograph is black and white. William Henry Thomas is standing straight and tall in the centre of the photograph, looking directly at the photographer while holding a weapon in his right hand. The Victorian Ex Servicewomen's Bicentennial Bowls Tournament was also a celebration for the bowlers who, 45 years earlier were contributing to Australia's war effort. Lorna Gorman, 79, who has received the Life Member of Melbourne WAAAF Branch, Royal Australian Air Force Association, Victoria Division award for services rendered over many years. Joan Wicks, 72, was on the first ship to leave Australia, after Japan entered the war in 1941, and joined the 2/1st Australian General Hospital at Gaza. After serving throughout the war she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Scholarship and on completion took up the position of Matron of the Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. Olive Jepson joined the Royal Australian Nursing Service in early 1942 and was attached to the 2/11th Australian General Hospital in Bonegilla.
