Alfred Donald Senior studied Electrical Engineering at the Ballarat Schoo of Mines (SMB) between 1927-33. He worked as an Instructor in Electric Welding at SMB between 1932 and 1967 receiving a certificate of Electrical Engineering, and greatly enjoyed his association with SMB as a student and instructor. Senior was an A. Grade Electrical Mechanic (A.M.I.E.I.s Vic and NSW) and was employed at the SEC Elec. Supply Co of Vic 1927-1970. He became Chief Electrical Inspector for the Mid-Western region.Hand embroidered pocket, framed in timber behind glass. The blazer pocket belonged to A.D. This photograph was given to Horace Lawson on the occasion of his retirement in 1918 as Town Clerk of Warrnambool. The photographs are of the Town Clerk, the Town Surveyor, the Mayor and Councillors in June 1918. The Mayor, William Swinton and the Town Clerk, Horace Lawson are in civic robes. Horace Lawson had a distinguished career as the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1893 to 1918 (which is actually 25 years, not 30 years as stated on the photograph). Lawson was a keen cyclist and a member of the Warrnambool Volunteer Army Corps. He left Warrnambool in 1918 to take up the position in Melbourne as Secretary of the Municipal Association of Victoria. The photographer, Arthur Jordan, working in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century, was well-known, particularly for his photographs of civic affairs. This photograph is of considerable interest as it concerns the retirement of Horace Lawson, an influential and highly-respected municipal officer in Warrnambool at a time of great growth in the town/city.This is a black and white photograph in a wooden frame with a heavy card inset and glass covering. Private Bertie Ernest Alfred Henderson served in the 5th Pioneer Battalion, 5th Division of the AIF. He died of wounds In France on 29/5/1918 or 1/6/1918. His burial place is Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-sur-Somme. The framed 'In Memoriam' has been in the custody of family members until presented to W&DHS in 2013 by Mrs Beris Porter. Pte BEA Henderson, 1866, 3 Pioneer Battalion(2 Reinforcement Group) was a farmer and single. His father was Mr HH Henderson of Naringal. He enlisted on 27/5/1916 then sailed on the Themistocles on 28/7/1916 and transferred to the 5 Pioneer Battalion. The Winslow races were held from approximately mid-19th century to around 1946. It began as a small picnic race club in Tobin’s paddock to a splendid race course on the property, “Green Hills” owned by Mr. John O’Keefe about one mile north of the Winslow township.. The annual meetings held on New Year’s Day drew crowds of seven to eight thousand people. This photo provides a snapshot of one of the most important and well patronised events in the district. The information on this document shows the inspiration and planning for the building of the aquarium at the Warrnambool breakwater. The instigator was Mr. John Doull, builders Fotheringham Constructions and architects, B. Auty and D Jenner. The Aquarium was opened in December 1971 by The Hon Ian Smith MLA. There were four separate exhibitions and galleries listed on the document. The Aquarium closed around 1998.A local landmark in the latter part of the 20th century with the domes being easily recognized. The South Warrnambool Primary school No 1902 was opened in 1877 by the mayor at the time Cr J Cramond. The first teacher was Mrs Eliza Clarke. It catered for the children of the strong and closely knit community of South Warrnambool. The Mc Donald family was one of these families. A clear photograph of a school with which many past students would have fond memories. A contribution over 25 years to a primary school in this case by W D McDonald is a story of personal endeavour. Don Jenkins was the Managing Director of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill from 1971 to 1989. He was first employed at the Woollen Mill in 1935. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill in South Warrnambool was established in 1910 with the first manager, J.E. Bennett. By 1915 there were 160 employees and in 1969 there were 380 employees. In 1980 acrylic blankets and fabrics were made on the site and in 1982 there was a name change to Warrnambool Textiles. In 1995 the Smith Family took over the factory, following its ownership by several other Australian firms. It closed in 2000. This is an important photograph as the Warrnambool Woollen Mill was a prominent business in Warrnambool for 90 years. Don Jenkins was the Managing Director for 19 years and this is a good photograph of him and is very useful for display and research purposes. A small card at the back of the picture reads,’ This Picture was a teaching aid used in St. John’s Kinderg S.S and was found in the Church Ruins after the fire in July 1920 by Nancy McC(Absalom). Later framed by Grandma. St. John’s Presbyterian Church was built in 1875 and was burned down July 21st 1920. A volunteer fireman Mr T Spicer discovered the fire and despite the prompt arrival of the fire brigade, after an hour only the walls and tower remained. Some items were salvaged including vestry furnishings and church register. A bible which had been given to the Church in 1895 was rescued by an unknown young man whose identity remained a mystery until1976 when a Mr Stan Williams of Ballarat told his story. The Church was rebuilt in 1922. The event of this fire remains one of the most significant in the history of Warrnambool. Framed print of kookaburra on branch in natural setting. Frank Saunders was the foundation president of the Upper Kiewa Valley Ambulance Service. There was an Ambulance service in the Upper Kiewa Valley commencing in April 1940 when a four stretcher ambulance was made available on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. It was designed for comparatively long and rough trips, involving some departures from usual ambulance design. Companies involved were O/C Motor Vehicles (Mr Frank Stone), in collaboration with the builders, Messrs. Jas. Thompson & Co. of South Yarra. (Ref. SECV magazine. A popular destination for the district and visitors with many fly fishermen staying there.Mr and Mrs Crotty were the first publicans of the hotel. The school was built to educate the increasing number of children of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme population. The school opened in 1948 in the Recreation hall and in the new building (photo) in 1950. A new wing was built in 1951 and became the Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School in 1953. In December 1939 the excavation of the diversion tunnel at the site of Junction (Lake Guy) Dam was commenced and finished in February, 1940.This allowed the stream to be diverted to facilitate the dam wall construction. This is a 'slab and buttress' dam. It is framed with timber and concrete then poured into the structure. A contract was let to Lewis Construction Co. for the construction of the dam, and the first batch of concrete was placed in September, 1940. Industrial trouble caused some delays but there was also slow progress on the part of the contractor and the work was taken over by the S.E.C., terminating the contract. The dam was completed in March, 1944. The lake is named after Mr. L.T. Guy who was the Resident Engineer, in charge of construction work and associated activities on the Kiewa area, from 1939 until November 1946.
