Noel Webster was mayor of the City of Nunawading from 1973 to 1974. He was a founding member of the Vermont High School council and a board member of Maroondah Hospital. He was involved in U3A and was a founding member of the Early Planning for Retirement Association. Jean Webster was the president of the Nunawading Historical Society and both assisted the resettlement of Cambodian migrants. Noel COUNIHAN (04 Oct 1913 - 05 Jul 1986) This lino cut is the second largest version of Counihan's Laughing Christ series of linocuts from the 1970s. Janet McKenzie in her book 'Noel Counihan' (1986, p. 25) uses Counihan's quote in his description of the Laughing Christ series of art works: "Once again the armies of the Western world were moving against people behind the image of Christ: they were Christian armies. The American and Australian armies in Vietnam had their chaplains with them and were slaughtering Buddhists, as well ironically enough, as Vietnamese Catholics". Counihan's fury at the blood shed and massacre of war behind the image of Jesus is evident in his ironic portrayal of a Laughing Christ. Was this what Jesus was about? Not likely! This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007. A portrait of a former Junior Legatee, Noel Shiels who had enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in World War 2. It was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). Research on NAA.gov.au and DVA confirms it was Noel Lindsey Sheils Service No 430062, who was born 31 March 1924 in Preston who joined the RAAF when he enlisted on 4 December 1942, he became a pilot and his rank was flying officer and was posted with the 37 Squadron. His father was James Howard Sheils Service No 158 of the 1st Bay AFA who died in May 1931 leaving his wife and 5 children. From the early 1950s, the Kew Repertory Players performed more substantial, if less spectacular fare in the Recreation Hall, and later in the new Kew City Hall, after the former’s demolition in 1960. Their repertoire ranged from plays by Noel Coward to J.B. Priestley. Many of their programmes, the earliest from 1953, and the last from 1965, form part of our collection.Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1970s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. Programme issued by The Kew Repertory Players for a performance of the Australian premiere of Waiting in the Wings by Noel Coward. Performances took place in the Kew City Hall in March 1963.
