Photograph captioned 'Golden Square Fire Brigade Dahlia Float at Easter Fair', is one of nine sepia mounted photographs pertaining to early 20th century Bendigo donated to BHS by the Essendon Op Shop. Uncle Son caption and tick possibly relates to W G Dahl. Float mounted upon a hand drawn fire brigade hose & reel cart has two uniformed Fire-men standing beside the cart, along with three kneeling men wearing ties, vests and suits. Float covered in dahlia flowers has sign reading 'Erected by the Committee of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition Melb 1901-2 in Commemoration of the Discovery of Gold in Bendigo'. Moulded images in white featuring a kneeling boy panning for gold beside a standing young girl in long dress are prominently displayed upon the top portion of the flower covered float. The float stands in Charring Cross in front of the now demolished Horse Bazaar once located between the Lyric Theatre and the City Family Hotel. Ornate brickwork of the building follows the roof-line either side of embossed 'Established 1853'. Two matching arches are featured on front of building. Horse Bazar is embossed in large capital letters above main entrance arch, with Nicholls & Hill above the other. Embossed letters below read succeeded to L Macpherson & Co & F Hill. A small arched window within walled arch matches entrance arch. A notice board mounted on building front reads, Office of the Australian Alliance Assurance Company , Fire Life Guaranteed. Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Capital Theatre, Bendigo. Thursday, 10th November, 8pm. This series of Concerts is arranged by the Australian Broadcasting Commission. Conductor and Soloist: Walter Susskind. Walter Susskind (with photo), During his two years as resident conductor of the Victorian Symphony Orchestra, Walter Susskind has left an indelible impression on music lovers by his conducting and his personality, both of which have endured him to concert audiences everywhere. Walter Susskind is now relinquishing his appointment of the permanent conductorship for the A.B.C. in Victoria to return overseas, and this final tour by the Victorian Symphony Orchestra for the 1955 season is also Mr Susskind's finale in Australia. An appealing future of these concerts to be presented over several provincial centres in turn will be the . . . Analytical Notes. Bendigo Concert Series Discontinued. The Australian Broadcasting Commission announces with regret that it has been found necessary to restrict the nimber of concerts presented in Bendigo each year pwing to the lack of sufficient support of these activities. Since 1947 the A.B.C. has presented a series of rour concerts each year in Bendigo. During these years artists who have appeared in the series include Ginette Neveu, Gyorgy Sandor, Erna Berger, the Robert Masters Quartet, Sydney MacEwan, Elena Nikolaidi, Michael Rabin, William kapell, Leon Goosens, Max Rosral, Sulvia Fisher, and many others of world standing. In addition, the Victorian Symphony Orchestra has given performances each year under such eminent conductor as Alceo Galliera, Juan Jose Castro and Walter Sisskind, while last year the seies included a visit by the Sydney Orchestra under Sir Eugene Goossens. While the A.B.C. in anxious to continue its policy of brining artists of world standing to provincial centres, includeing Bendigo, the quire considerable costs incurred. The Highesdt number of subscribers to a series in Bendigo was attained in 1951, when 350 season tickets were purchased. In all other uears, including 1955, the number has fallen below the required minimum, and ir has been decided not to proceed with plans for the 1956 season, although . . . The candidate of these three degrees is progressively taught the meanings of the symbols of Freemasonry and entrusted with grips, signs, and words to signify to other members that he has been so initiated. The degrees are part allegorical morality play and part lecture. Candidates for Freemasonry will usually have met the most active members of the Lodge they are joining before being elected for initiation. Many prominent men including City Councilors were lodge members at it was a popular way for men to socialise. The Golden and Corinthian Lodges purchasing two blocks of land in a prominent position in View Street in 1866 with the intention of erecting a new temple and after amalgamating in 1872 appointed architects Vahland and Getzschmann to design the building. The Bendigo Masonic Hall (now the Capital Theatre) was built in 1873 -74 for both public and private use and contained lodge rooms, a public tavern anda concert hall. The Masonic section occupied the northern side of the building at ground floor level and included a lodge room at the rear, a library and reading room, and other affiliated rooms. Walls of the entry hall and lodge room were decorated with classical columns and panels ornamented with Masonic emblems. The upper level of the building contained a large hall with balcony at the north end and removable stage at the south end. Elaborately decorated with Masonic emblems, this hall was used for Masonic purposes as well as being available to the wider community for social events. The tavern, which became known as the Masonic Hotel, occupied the basement and the ground floor of the southern side of the building and included a sitting room, parlours, billiard room, bedrooms, kitchen, cellars and servants' rooms. It appears that two public entrances were provided for this section, one directly from street level into the basement, the other from the public entry hall. The degrees of Freemasonry retain the three grades of medieval craft guilds, those of Entered Apprentice, Journeyman or fellow (now called Fellowcraft), and Master Mason. The candidate of these three degrees is progressively taught the meanings of the symbols of Freemasonry and entrusted with grips, signs, and words to signify to other members that he has been so initiated. The degrees are part allegorical morality play and part lecture. Candidates for Freemasonry will usually have met the most active members of the Lodge they are joining before being elected for initiation. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freemasonry) The Golden Lodge of Sandhurst was established as the first Masonic Lodge in Bendigo in 1854. Many prominent men including City Councilors were lodge members at it was a popular way for men to socialise. As the masonic movement expanded further lodges were established in Bendigo and the surrounding Boroughs and Shires. The Golden and Corinthian Lodges purchasing two blocks of land in a prominent position in View Street in 1866 with the intention of erecting a new temple and after amalgamating in 1872 appointed architects Vahland and Getzschmann to design the building. The Bendigo Masonic Hall (now the Capital Theatre) was built in 1873 -74 for both public and private use and contained lodge rooms, a public tavern anda concert hall. The Masonic section occupied the northern side of the building at ground floor level and included a lodge room at the rear, a library and reading room, and other affiliated rooms. Walls of the entry hall and lodge room were decorated with classical columns and panels ornamented with Masonic emblems. The upper level of the building contained a large hall with balcony at the north end and removable stage at the south end. Elaborately decorated with Masonic emblems, this hall was used for Masonic purposes as well as being available to the wider community for social events. The tavern, which became known as the Masonic Hotel, occupied the basement and the ground floor of the southern side of the building and included a sitting room, parlours, billiard room, bedrooms, kitchen, cellars and servants' rooms. It appears that two public entrances were provided for this section, one directly from street level into the basement, the other from the public entry hall.
